I used to love that album. I was a big Stone Roses fan back in the late 90s and Squire was my guitar hero. Maybe the songcraft has its flaws, but despite the coke, in the axe department, he's on fire in this album, and clearly wants to make the statement. And is hardly comparable to the first, since they have so different musical directions. Stylistically, he's doing opposite things. Kind of shoegazing/jangling in the first, totally blues/rock in the second. Psychedelia would be the common denominator in my opinion

I actually play the gibson les paul which is on that photo, the one that was possibly used for that recording and definitely used for live performances of that song. my father got it in london... late nineties, I think. have some proofs, if needed. I am russian and live in moscow currently... born in 1994, the year that recording was made. it was the only guitar in our house so I began playing it as a teenager... being a trained violinist as a kid, I didn't really fit into the whole rock and roll thing, so I started using it for guitar ambient a la robin guthrie. so that is what that les paul is actually doing now, in the hands of some noname guy in moscow, russia, who is obsessed with baroque music, noise and ambient sound experiments. love and respect for the madchester and john squire. dunno, sometimes I think I am not the right guy for that guitar, and it should have belonged to some professional musician or a diehard stone roses fan - and sometimes I think that it's beautiful that the instrument has its own life, and its trajectory is sort of unpredictable and the whole "what they least suspect is coming next" thing has its own beauty. so that gibson is being used in obscure ambient recordings now. just wanted the share my story, and sorry if my english is not good enough. oh and I wanna say that I really love that recording and js's technique and energy is really unique on that one

I've recently bought an old 1995 issue of Guitar magazine from ebay because I was looking for the amps and gear used on this album. There's a features on the Roses and the making of Second Coming. It didn't state exactly what was used on each track, but I've gathered this to be a little clearer: First thing states that John Leckie-produced sessions included Breaking Into Heaven into, parts of How Do You Sleep and Begging You'. Then another section says his main amps were Mesa/Boogies and Fender Twins, the Mesa/Boogies used for much of the first sections with Leckie and the Twins were 'more favoured' in the later sessions with Simon Dawson.

@SuburbanFox

I used to love that album. I was a big Stone Roses fan back in the late 90s and Squire was my guitar hero. I think people hated it because it was basically a whole album of Squire showing off, and non-guitarists tend to not enjoy guitarists showing off, but as a fairly new guitarist who'd just progressed from playing Oasis songs, it was exactly what I needed.
Fascinating. Producers take note. This is how you put together a groove out of multiple tracks.
3:10 to 3:26 is probably my favourite 16 seconds of guitar playing ever - the massive slide after the silence gives me goosebumps.

My Squire favorite is the riff between the 2 choruses in 'I am the Resurrection' (I hope I said that right because you guys are all professional musicians and I'm not). Anyway, after Ian sings the 1st chorus, I pump the volume WAY UP and SCREAM ALONG. It's magic.

Often those who are praised as the "greatest" simply had the luck and circumstance to hit the global pop vein... also if we talkin about Squire being underrated what should we be saying about their drummer Reni? andyheed123 I don't listen to a lot of 80s and 90s music. I listen to players like Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Keith Richards and Hendrix. Basically, 60s and 70s stuff. So no, I had never really heard of him. He's not half as popular as the players I mentioned before, even though I think he'e almost on the same level as some of them. He's hardly on any "best guitar players" lists, and as far as I'm concerned, he's not that well known among the guitar community. Hugely underrated player and certainly deserves more appreciation, if you ask me.

John Squire is one of the most underrated British guitarist. I know I'm probably going to anger a lot of people saying this but the technique that John Squire brought to the table could match up just as solidly as rock guitarist like Angus Young, Keith Richards, Tony Iommi, even Jimmy Page. I'm not saying the stone roses had better songs than the other bands I've mentioned, I'm just saying John Squire was very underrated.

all songs when recorded in a studio are recorded in different parts onto different tracks. so the guitar will be on 1. drums on another, bass on another and so on. in the end there could 20 or so different layers of tracks. look up the making of bohemian rhapsody and brain explains all the different tracks used to make it.

@lazyitus Well in the game you do hear both. But the audio you hear was directly ripped from the guitar chart of the game rather than the full audio (hence how we're hearing only the guitar) and as such we're hearing whatever part was charted rather than both.

Love John♥️ Any of your who haven't checked out Robin Trower you really should, not just his 1973-1983 classic era but also his work from 1993 to present, you maybe pleasantly surprised, I refused to listen to him as I thought he was 'uncool' and had a terrible hair do, thus I didn't discover his work until 2007 , now I can't believe I lived so long without it. @FretLegendSmithy considering the STYLE he's playing in, I dare to say he's excelling. Psychedelia would be the common denominator in my opinion
this is amazing. My ex wifes dad is an older guitar player who knows good stuff. He's into jeff beck, yard birds, Rory Gallagher, john mayall, etc. Good older stuff. I think he'd say he likes this but he wouldnt be wowed by it like myself. It's cool. I played him Yngwvie Malmsteem once! Funny reaction. But god I love this guitar track. full disclosure: I own an ENGL Powerball 2 and a USA Jackson Soloist. Please no hate.
That tone is the best anyone has got from a Les Paul. I heard he hot wired 2 amplifiers while recording second coming that helped him get the tone apparently. Best guitarist after Hendrix
