Love Parade: How Berlin's techno event became a phenomenon - and a disaster | History Stories
Love Parade started out in Berlin in 1989 as a political protest for peace and international understanding through love and music. The demonstration went on to become an annual event and one of Europe's largest music festivals and techno parades. For over a decade, the German capital city was brought to a sweaty standstill in the summer, until the festival eventually relocated to other German cities. In 2008, Love Parade achieved a record turnout, with 1.6 million ravers hitting the streets of the German city of Dortmund. Two years later, disaster struck in Duisburg, with a crowd crush killing 21 people. In 2017, the trial of ten defendants from the city of Duisburg and the organizer began at the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court. By 2020, the trial ended without convictions. The founder of Love Parade, DJ Dr. Motte is attempting to create a Love Parade revival on Berlin's streets with "Rave the Planet". This episode of History Stories traces the history of Love Parade from its beginnings as a crowd of 150 walking the streets of Berlin to its tragic end in Duisburg.

Sorry DW but you made a mistake: in the time from 2006 to 2010 the brand of the Love Parade had been sold to the owner of McFit, a gyms owning company. He ignored the warnings from Police and Fire Department which in the end lead to the disaster we are all aware of. Dr. Motte wasn't during that period responsible for what happened.

True, however Dr.Motte did sell the Love Parade brand to McFit. If he had just ended the Love Parade without selling the brand to a bunch of amateurs, no disaster would have happened. His greed was larger than his honour and love for his creation.
OMG what an epic period so beautifully exposed on film. So many great feelings passes by when looking at it with tears in my eyes and hair on my arms standing up… i have been there twice, in 1995 and 1996, such a painful ending this has had in the end. All together… what a movement and demonstration it was and actually still is, never forget! Love is the key, only love! Peace all! ❤️

Fast forward to 2022. How big is EDM now? The number of huge festivals has been at most countries, the height that Djs and clubs are at. It's been a great ride and glad I was there from 1996. Still ❤❤ the music!!

@@DWHistoryandCulture back then it was Ultra because it was in Miami. But I remember Paul van Dyks early sets on the floats. Edm was very limited and barely in the states. Whats incredible is that some of those djs are still as popular as ever and the growth exponential!👏👏 Many new sounds and talents. It's here to stay!!

I was in Berlin in 1999 and 2000, i was geste Fest of music and friendly people. It was party of my live. Love Peace and Happiness! It was no gay pride, or something like that, because there was no problem or seeing different. We all were just enjoying music, seeing no difference. Very sad actually...
These people wouldve never died, if the parade was still in its home, Berlin. Youve got so many possibilites here, the open era of the Tiergarten, free employers for cleaning, a perfect infrastructure... Hope the senators of Berlin, which declined to financially support the parade, feel guilty as well.

Free employers for cleaning? The cleaning up after the dirty ravers were too expensive for Berlin. Technically the waste producing ravers were responsible for the dead ravers according to your logic.
