The film follows closely to the first story of the anime called Quest for Iscandar. If you watch the anime then the film, this song I felt was so appropriate. The first time I heard this song was when I watched the film, already a fan of the anime. In the US, Yamato is referred to as "Star Blazers". I recommend watching these sometime. The film will make a little more sense if you know something about the anime and it's characters.
