Love Island cast open up about mental health difficulties | Cosmopolitan UK
Ойын-сауық
On the face of it, it seems like Love Island stars have it all; wealth, fame, and good looks to match. But the reality is, they’re not immune to the same mental health issues as the rest of us.
The deaths of Mike Thalassitis and Sophie Gradon serve as stark reminders that, however idyllic you perceive someone’s life to be from a distance, there may be other things going on inside, and it’s triggered reality TV stars to be more open about their own mental health.
Here, 16 former Love Islanders open up about the mental health difficulties that have challenged them, and the mechanisms they use to cope.
Featuring:
Marcel Somerville, series 3 (2017)
Samira Mighty, series 4 (2018)
Grace Wardle, series 4 (2018)
Laura Crane, series 4 (2018)
Tyne-Lexy Clarson, series 3 (2017)
Alex Miller, series 4 (2018)
Laura Anderson, series 4 (2018)
Theo Campbell, series 3 (2017)
Charlie Brake, series 4 (2018)
Alex George, series 4 (2018)
Adam Collard, series 4 (2018)
Sam Bird, series 4 (2018)
Charlie Frederick, series 4 (2018)
Josh Denzel, series 4 (2018)
Zara McDermott, series 4 (2018)
Malin Andersson, series 2 (2016)

Gigi gigi You're right but also I don't think people really understand the impact of going on reality tv shows and becoming a megastar, it all sounds so good and dandy despite videos like this coming out, people think their experience will be different because it's so sugar coated and that's what brings in a new cast each year

This is wonderful what you are doing for mental health. Amazing. I transfer patients very day with mental health and I just want to help them. It is true mental health hits all parts of society. I have transferred Doctors, police, nurses, solicitors, unemployed, mothers etc. Mental health is growing. I have suffered for many years on and off and some of those dark whole have been impossible at times. I remember fearing telling people. I hid my mental health for many years. Good friends and family was a god send. Hey have a great day.

Charlie's tip of asking "are you ok?" twice is fantastic. That's exactly how i wish my friends dealt with me and my mental health. Your instinct reaction is to always brush it off and minimise things to not bother people but if someone cares enough to just ask you again, I'd be way more likely to open up.

So important to stress that physical and mental health are the same, no difference!
@jackrichardson766
5 жыл бұрын
y90_ xx I understand what you’re saying, but just want to say, mental health and physical health are completely different concepts. Physical injuries and problems with your physical health can be noticed and people can see it and there is no escaping. Mental health has been under thought of for a long time now and it’s important to recognise that people who are struggling with their mental health don’t often show it and it’s often that it can go completely unnoticed, as was the case with Mike and Sophie. Again, understand what you’re saying, but the way they present themselves couldn’t be further apart, there is still a stigma attached to mental health, and we need to break it down
@jackrichardson766

My sister's mental health took her life in may this year and the fact that there isn't enough out there to help for people suffering with mental health makes me feel sick .yes there are helplines and counsellors but when u have mental health problems it can take alot of strength that you might not have to talk to someone or get help! Make sure u always ask if someone's okay and if they say yes ask them again and make sure they know you're a safe person to talk to. Always be kind to people because you never know what will change someone's life.

I love this video so much than you cosmopolitan for creating this and thank you to these amazing people for taking part in this project for such an amazing topic💖💘💞💗💓
I really really appreciate the amount of previous contestants that they got involved with this! It really is an eye opener to see how many people were affected in a negative way
The fact is alot of us are broken people and have different issues, so going on a show where people pick or refuse u aint easy then knowing it will be shown on tv , show support for people and dont get caught up with what people say that is negative . god is love.
this is so sad :( hoping that they'll make counselling absolutely compulsory before and like even 3 years after at the minimum of each series. I don't think the whole show should be cancelled. Every reality tv show is problematic. It's entertainment at the end of the day. However, we can change or there should be things set in place always for those that rise to fame on shows like this. I don't necessarily think there's a DIRECT correlation between this show and those unfortunate passing of the ex Islanders, but their agencies and managers need to be doing more for the people they represent.
Really good to see the proper manly men on here like Theo and Marcel sharing their feelings. Shows it affects everyone no matter who you might be and no matter how strong and manly you might appear
@basementbats
5 жыл бұрын
So only the black men are proper manly men? Really do agree with the sentiment and in fact especially agree with the idea that there is a lot of toxic masculinity especially centered around and pressured onto black men so it’s particularly great that they’re speaking out but the way you worded your comment comes off as though they’re somehow more masculine because of their race which is part of the same issue I just mentioned

Skipper i see your point but i think they were more referring to their attitudes in the show . hence they didn’t tmention josh
@DT-ub6ud

Skipper what I meant was that on the show, Theo especially came across as very tough and very cheeky- you would never have thought he would be affected by mental health issues whereas people like Alex was a sensitive soul on the show who was especially attuned to peoples feelings more so than others- hence I didn’t mention Alex and a couple of the other guys. I mentioned Theo and Marcel but I didn’t mention them because they’re black- I just picked those two because of their personalities on the show

It’s really interesting watching this because on the show and even on Instagram to an extent they’re real people who are presented as characters, and it’s far easier to say ‘I don’t like this character’ or ‘I don’t like the way this character looks’ than it is about a real person with feelings. On January 7th 2019, I tried to take my own life. I’m 14 years old. I never genuinely speak out about this because it’s a touchy subject but something needs to be said. There isn’t one day where I don’t think about doing it again. And actually I wished it had worked. So I’m not here to give empathy to anyone. I’m here to make sure everyone has a voice. Speak out about your experiences in the past. But for real, don’t fight this on your own. You’re stronger than you know 😕
I think it’s lovely that they r finally speaking out about this but I feel like no ones rly talkin about sophie

i think the love island producers need to work on preparing contestants for life in the public eye so that when they leave they have the right support network with good coping mechanisms in place to make the transition easier. of course it’s gonna take a massive toll on their mental health but it’s very easy for people to overlook how difficult it can be. famous or not we’re all human and we all deserve support for our mental health, if you’re struggling please speak to someone even if it’s just a friend or your mum because talking to someone helps so much xx
Mike I still miss him.

One thing I never see people talk about, but have seen with myself and soooo many friends! Sometimes the Drs and therapists will fuck you up more than before, sometimes the person you choose to talk to isn't always right and they don't support you the way you need. That's their fault not yours - change therapist, talk to different people in your life, just because one person knocks you down doesn't mean another can't help you in your journey to lift yourself up again. Its not simply go talk to someone and its done, with true depressions there's a million and one cycles. You'll climb one cliff just to tumble down and need to climb another. Try the best you can to not hate yourself for hating yourself, to not get angry with yourself for not being "strong" enough to just be happy. There is no strength in just lifting a bar with not weights on it, your training yourself to lift so much weight and the true strength comes from keeping on trying to lift it even though sometimes your just not able to.
Love island cast talks about body image, mental health, etc... while 90% of the love island cast have had cosmetic surgery My heart is so heavy for Malin ❤️

You look young they try to avoid giving medication at your age (I'm 19 now, stated feeling the same as you at 14 they didn't give until I was 17) but it will get better and you can get a counsellor. Sometimes they might brush it off as teenage problems which gets annoying and you might have to keep going back a few times but it does help. Another good way to feel less anxious, is to realise who you are as a person and how much you are amazing it's hard but just acting as yourself and just doing what you felt at the time really helped me.
