"Love in a Puff", a Delicate and Unusual Flowering Vine

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Learn about the Love in a Puff (Cardiospermum halicacabum) vine. Love in a Puff has it all: strong, but not aggressive growth habit, dainty white flowers, and the most striking "puffs". Although it is an annual in Zone 4, Love in a Puff delivers a strong performance in a relatively short summer. Plus, you can harvest the seeds for year-after-year. rewards!
It's seeds are black with a little white heart-shaped "hat". Hence, "love" in a puff. The botanical name (Cardiospermum halicacabum) also refers to the heart shaped marking on the seeds: Cardio (for heart) and spermum (for seed). It's fun when a name such as this all comes together.
Please note that it is invasive in some areas of the world, so please check with your own localities for concerns or restrictions.

    My granddaughter gave me a "love in a puff" plant that she started and I later planted it out. If grew like crazy and it is quite a climber. I did harvest quite a few seeds and I am now about to start some this year. But this time I will be giving some of plants back to my granddaughter. She was quite happy with the plant. It really is a very sweet, delicate plant and this year I am going to put it in lots of area that need just a little softness. FINGERS CROSSED!! Love the arch.

    Cool! It is so much fun to propagate plants from seeds that you've harvested yourself. I'm not sure why, but it's more fulfilling. Good luck. I think I only needed to buy seeds the first year.

    I planted mine after mother's day and I have so many puffs ! They call them Love in a puff because the little black ball's inside the puff have a cream colored heart on them. This is my favorite! And they must have something to climb they definitely need a trellis. My husband had to add an additional trellis for me. They really will climb and wrap around the trellis. ❤ they are about ready for picking.

    Yes, the little heart seeds are adorable! What an apt name! Although I've only grown them on a trellis, I have seen them ramble along the top of a retaining wall at a public park. It looked pretty good. I still like the vertical aspect of vines and climbers though. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    I'm sorry, I had thought I replied earlier! You are so right about the seeds. I did not realize that when I made the video. What a lost opportunity, because it makes sense with the name of the plant: Cardiospermum (heart - seed) and Love in a Puff (Heart in a puff). Someone told me that after I published the video and I actually thought about redoing it. The seeds make the plant extra special. Thanks for your note. Hopefully others will read this.

    Hi, I do not know for sure if the Cardiospermum would be invasive in Zone 5, but I would tend to doubt it. It is always best to check with your local agriculture officials, however. One way to minimize the risk, is to pull the vines and "puffs" down when they turn brown. That helps eliminate the possibility of the seeds getting into the soil and germinating. Good luck!

    Hi, I put mine directly into the ground, although you could plant in a container and put the container next to a trellis. You might have to help the little tendrils find the trellis, however. I wouldn't recommend putting a trellis in a pot and then growing it as the generous plant could overwhelm the pot/trellis system with its girth. Good luck!

    hi, what is zone 4 ?

  • @RosannesGarden

    @RosannesGarden

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yes, great question. In short, zones are a standard set by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) by which gardeners and growers can determine which plants are most likely to thrive at a location. In general, the further south the location, the higher the number. To be in Zone 4 means that our low temperature each year has averaged between -20 degrees F. and -30 degrees F. For example, plants listed as "hardy, Zone 5 to Zone 9"", would not be very hardy in Zone 4 and probably will not survive. Here's a link to a map and more information from the USDA website: planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/PHZMWeb/.
