2:20 to answer this simply as possible. Viego's sword (aka Blade of the Ruined King in the game) is magical and holds a piece of his soul. Viego was stabbed by his own magical blade WHILE STANDING in the Waters of the Blessed Isles, which is magical water that heals. These unforeseen circumstances caused Viego's chest to explode and turn the Blessed Isles into the Shadow Isles. 2:50 I AM IRONMAN!!!!

There is a cinematic related to end of Viego. You should check it as its not too long. Absolution | Sentinels of Light 2021 Cinematic - League of Legends But related to hole in middle of his chest... First "undead" of the mists was Isolde. She died while trying to save Viego from an assassin but dagger's poison eventually took her. He was obsessed to bring her back and he heard about blessed isles and its waters that has imemnse magical powers. He wanted to use that power to bring her back. People there told him it is wrong and dangerious but he did so still. He put Isolde in water and completed it. She came back but in her terror she took his blade and stabbed him. Viego even after coming back to world doesn't remember that moment, most likely his mind denies Isolde doing it. Isolde's soul shatters. 1 goes to an undead sentinel(One was dead to mists but saved by her husband... sentinels are undead hunters. Her sanity %100 remains so she continues the battle) 1 goes to a doll she once made, doll now creates "hallowed" mists:Counter part of black mist. Isolde does love Viego, and she still does. She is sad for what happened to him but she wants to rest. as far as I know blessed isles' waters magic can go forever. And spell of ressurection never stopped, creating undead forever

I actually reacted to a playlist about the sentinels of light not to long ago ! I never noticed he had a hole in his chest though. I guess it makes sense since he was stabbed by his own sword through the chest. Such an awesome story though. Cant wait to play the RPG about it

You checked everything :) By the way community hated that event just wanted to point out: Reason is it added bunch of characters had nothing to do with the ruination (Rengar,graves,pyke,olaf) and kept characters that had their entire entity built around it out of it because of their likeabilty(to sell skins) story is cool but people hate it because of lost potential. as example my favorite is Yorick. He was living in BLESSED ISLES(not yet shadow isles) and he had the abilty to speak with spirits. All of people there made fun of him thinking he is mad, until they are die because after that he proven them he can see them and help them in their after life to do their last wishes. When shadow isles happened he preserved his sanity. He is working relentlessly to bring isles to its former glory. He is speaking with dead there to save them from mists and dead help him at his battle against mists.
