Loudest vintage boombox? Panasonic RX-A5 versus RX-6400 (National RXA2)

Музыка

UPDATE: I think I know why the RX-A5 didn't have as much bass. The surrounds on the active woofers are too stiff. They barely even move when touched. They are made of resin-coated cloth, and I think that resin has dried out and become stiff. I have seen that happen on other models too. So I recommend replacing those surrounds with new foam ones, which will be much softer and flexible, producing better bass.

    As a fan of old school djs like Jellybean, Shep Pettibone, François Kevorkian and Larry Levan I would love to connect some iPods and use it like a rotary mixer, beat matching isn't necessary, everything that matters is good tracks and some knobs :) Thanks for a great review of these boomboxes!

    I got one of these today and was surprised how well it functioned. Even the Panasonic microphone it came with gave good and loud sound, actually very loud. I don't know much about these yet but they seem capable of meeting the sound needs of anyone in a small venue, even the echo feature sounded good.

    Both are the loudest boomboxes bar none, for the record the RX A5 speakers are bit bigger than a CD/DVD disc so they are 5 inches not 4 inches. Both are 15w RMS on battery or DC input but on AC more than double that! both are very desirable to own.The A5 is much rarer so technically worth more. I own both.

Anyhow its battery outputs already impressive @15w RMS /Channel its more powerful on batteries than most other boxes are on AC, anyhow as you said on your video for the above reasons the batteries don't last long at all.

    Excellent devices, how ever I don´t like most of them have a 100 hz band for bass and I would say speaker boxes not deep enough for low frecuencies. I only have seen a ZONDA boombox with a 60 hz band in a 5 band graphic ecualizer, and believe me, 60 hz instead of 100 hz make a lot of difference.

    I have a Panasonic RX - 5250 which is rated at 7.5 watts per channel into 3 ohms per service manual. That is probably at 10% distortion at 1kHz. I will run mine into a dummy load and see what it does in the real world. Can't measure the distortion unless I borrow a THD meter, but I can see where it starts to clip. The Pioneer 1980 receiver was rated at 270 wpc into 8 ohms, but would start to clip at around 280wpc. Will follow up if anyone interested.

    Even RMS data can be faked. Sometimes they will test only one channel, then multiply it by 2, which would result in more power than if they had tested both channels at the same time. In the 1960s and 70s, they used the words "both channels driven" so you knew they did it correctly. Also they told you the minimum watts it could achieve across a wide frequency range. In the 80s they started saying "RMS Max" instead, which is just the highest number it ever achieved at some random point somewhere within the entire range. That's not as useful.

  • @user-oh2kt8lf6g

    @user-oh2kt8lf6g

    Well, it is not all that difficult to check, in case of detacheable speakers at least. A couple of ceramic wirewound resistors 8 Ohm each can connected to the speakers terminals instead of the speakers. Then, a sinusoid signal of, say, 1kHz should be played (either pre-recorded on a tape or via AUX) while the voltage on one of the resistors is being monitored with a oscillograph. Gradual increase of the volume will eventually lead to the output sinusoid maxima clipping. Hence the maximum amplitude (Umax) which squared and divided by 2 times R (= 8 Ohm) will yield the RMS power (Umax^2/(2*R)). I did so to determine the maximum power of my DIY radio tape recorder (I use 4 Ohm woofers driven by two TDA2005's in BTL mode, kzread.info/dash/bejne/a3WKy9CRlLPfdps.html). Though, you are absolutely right about the specific frequency at which the RMS was measured.

    🤨 ~ not exactly a “boombox” but between that and a HI-FI = as to how big & heavy they are - portable HI-FI, they even have electronic instrument [e- guitar, keyboard] inputs on the front so possibly a portable PA/sound system? I assume the analog meters on the top unit are turning/battery charge on playback, and VU when recording a cassette? The lower unit appeared to just have LED VU meter and not indicating tuning/battery

  • @80s_Boombox_Collector

    @80s_Boombox_Collector

    Really the only way they're not boomboxes is that the speakers don't attach, the fold together, so you can't carry it while playing it. So yeah it's more of a PA system for rappers and church groups. And you're right about the meters.

    M70 output is only 7Wx2 minimum at 10% THD, according to the service manual. The 15Wx2 was most likely made up by the marketing guys. It's definitely one of the best boxes, but both of these units would blow it away in overall volume.

    @@80s_Boombox_Collector yes the 7W x 2 was indeed at 10% THD but max was 15W x 2 but I’m guessing it wouldn’t sound very nice. I believe the L and LB models were the more powerful as well with 47W usage compared to for example the JW model at 40W. I may be mistaken and it’s very likely 😂 Thanks for the info.

    @@amnril I doubt many people play their boomboxes at 10% THD, as it would sound like shit lol. So I can't see how they would crank it up beyond that either. These companies made up numbers all the time, the government never forced them to be honest. Even today, look at all the bluetooth speakers that say 1000 watts even though the label on the back says they only consume 30-40.

    80's Boombox Collector Is the RX-CW30 A Ghettoblaster? It has the same thing, handle and "8 D-Batteries". It's more compact, but I'm getting mine at an antique shop for $45! Looks flawless and appears to play, thus It doesn't have batteries so I can't test it. But still, it seems like an insane steal for a cheap price! I hope once I come back there, it shall still be available. (Note; looking at the frequency response, it doesn't go as deep as I'd like it to. So I'll probably stuff in a great amplifier to really make it shine.)

    i think the RX-6400 doesn't just sound better, but looks so much better too! it's simple, doesn't have any cheap looking chrome highlights and overall, just looks like something built by the army (mil-spec) to last forever. i've always hated tacky chrome and pointless blinking lights etc. on boomboxes. the 6400 looks more like a home stereo (NAD maybe) component while the A5 looks like a cheap toy made in china.
