Known as the "King of the Mambo," Prado recorded numerous mambos, and when he ran out of inspiration, he would simply number them. "Mambo No 5" was one of a series of eight. Perez Prado's version was instrumental. In 1999, the German pop musician Lou Bega added lyrics to it, transforming it into a love song for several women, namely Angela, Pamela, Sandra, Rita, Monica, Erica, Tina, Mary and Jessica. I was listening to this in the car and per usual I was singing along and very loudly at that. When I pulled up to a light, I forgot my windows were down and I continued singing about wanting a little bit of Monica in my life. After a few verses I noticed my window was open and I looked to see the woman in the next car staring at me and naturally, I quieted for a moment in embarrassment. I went to Europe in the summer of 1999 and this song was played in literally every country. I came back to the states and no one had heard of this song. Then there were songs here that I hadn't heard. Life before social media and the internet like it is today was so much better. This takes me right back to that trip! ❤❤❤❤
