Lotus Silk Is One Of The Most Expensive Fabrics In The World

Lotus silk is one of the rarest and most coveted fabrics in the entire world. Its popularity comes from it being amazingly soft, wrinkle-resistant, stain-resistant, durable and eco-friendly. But its incredible price-- about ten times the cost of normal silk-- is mostly due to how scarce it is. It’s typically made in only three places around the world-- Cambodia, Myanmar, and Vietnam. Harvesting and extracting the silk threads is also a long and delicate process. It comes from the stems of lotus flowers and can only be harvested during certain months of the year. It can take two months of harvesting and processing to make just one single scarf, and even a small scarf can cost more than $200.
There aren’t many people trained in the delicate process of extracting the threads from the stems and there are a lot of conditions that must be met to keep the fabric from getting ruined. Vietnamese weaver Phan Thi Thuan is one of the innovators training people in how to work with the threads so that the market for lotus silk can grow and enrich her community. Thankfully lotus silk does have a lot of benefits for its price tag, including calming properties and a belief that it can improve heart, lung, and throat health. Here are all the details on how lotus silk is made, why one lotus silk jacket sold for $5,600, and the differences between normal silk and lotus silk that make it worth the investment.

@Sir Vaugh i never focus on brand. But more on quality. Gucci uses top grain which is not as good as full grain. I feel like you are paying more for the brand than the material. I do like italian dress shoes like acemarks they arent too expensive in the 250$ range.

We used to have that also in the Philippines (in my community) but it disappeared because the ponds where the lotus grows were filled and constructed with buildings. Indeed it is best harvested in monsoon season because it produces more sap and it's more stronger and not in hot season and the sap that it produces is brittle.

It looks like burlap, and honestly only strikes me as valued due to rarity, not so much quality. We already have soft fibers, breathable fibers, stretchy fibers, and wrinkle resistant fibers. All of which are dramatically easier to acquire, and use while being cheaper. Kinda like making a shirt out of typha fiber (cattail plant) than selling that for $1000 due to rarity, and calling it too "silk" to suggest prestigious value. I don't see this taking off just due to it being a scarcity market, pretty hard pressed to imagine we have nothing that can't beat Lotus "silk' in all properties, and characteristics.
