Under new ownership with an apparent thirst for success, is the Lotus Emira faithful to the company’s driver focused appeal? Henry Catchpole takes a prototype out on track to find out!
2022 saw the end of the Elise, Exige and Evora. The Emira represents a new beginning for Lotus with a massively overhauled approach to interior quality and refinement. But does this hinder the driver focused appeal of brand in any way? Could this even be the lotus that becomes your only car? This drive should give us a strong indication...

3.5-litre Toyota V6 or AMG 2.0L four-cylinder turbo
400HP
6-speed manual/torque-converter automatic or AMG 8-speed DCT

Agreed with the others so far. It's an Evora replacement, not Elise. Lotus may need these larger, more luxurious cars to survive, but they should always have a small, light sports car in their lineup. The Elise epitomizes what Lotus stands for.

The profits go mainly to the western company, the intellectual property, the market share, the skilled employees are in the western company. I will also gladly pay more for a phone made in the civilized world. Thankfully they have stated their intentions to bring production to the west again. There is a wide range of choice in the automobile market. Plenty of western-made, non-genocidal, non-espionage, non-Taiwan-invading car companies. Lotus are being artificially kept alive in order for China to use their brand to infiltrate the UK and western economy. It will eventually move everything to China once it has built a big enough following and its ownership is accepted. All production and eventually engineering and design will move to China. It will slowly suck out all of the knowledge at Lotus and feed this to Chinese engineers and designers. This is a common Chinese play book and you are all being played. This tactic is being engaged across every industrial sector and will eventually drain away all economic advantage from the west. You will all eventually loose your jobs, or have basic jobs with low wages that service Chinese companies in your country. If you do not believe this you are either A) Unable to understand the bigger picture B) So absorbed in your current lifestyle and /or so self centred that you ignore the truth C) Stupid. China (Geely) are in the process of moving Volvo to China as they slowly attempt to hollow out western industry. They cannot get traction with their own brand so they use western brands against us. China are literally an enemy, that may sound like hyperbole but it manifestly isn't. They are a communist/totalitarian regime. Partnership is in no way part of their thinking process. It is the cover they use to slowly dismember western economies. They do not want partnership they want control and ownership. This is an will increasingly bleed in to political control and eventually erosion of western freedoms. China simply cannot allow freedom of thought or speech, it is not only antithetical but an existential threat to their regime. This goes for any all other nations they have influence over and will eventually be true for us. We are walking ourselves in to totalitarian control. If you think it seems too far fetched then you need to think deeper and harder. If you think this process will be benign, it will not.

I bet the 2.0 AMG engine with DCT will be the better car anyway. I've got nothing at all against manuals, but unless it's a weekend-only car, the manual is the wrong choice, IMO, at least if you live in a city. And this Toyota V6 isn't at all special, and if you want auto and V6 it's an old-fashioned auto that's totally incompatible with the very idea of a Lotus. Problem is they're still at the prototype stage, so who knows when customer deliveries start for the V6, and it'll be even longer for the AMG engine. Frankly, I'm sick of waiting so long between announcements and available cars. It's not just Lotus, and I hope it's just a consequence of Covid, rather than a new trend, but it's so annoying, and the momentum they lose can't be good for business.

Thirdly, likening Lotus being Chinese owned to the atrocities being committed in the Ukraine is the most abhorrent and illegitimate argument I have ever heard and you need to have a long hard look at yourself before making such leaps in future. There is a theory that states the closer you are to comparing an act to mass tyranny, the closer you are to losing the argument, on that basis you lost the argument before it began my friend.

I work at a US OEM on the new model (VP) cars. It's funny seeing all the things pointed out and me going, "yep, mmhm." However, we don't really use 3D printing because we have more cars for testing. The worst car and most expensive car I've ever driven was a very early prototype car haha. Love seeing a later build event prototype!

As a fellow gentleman who's lengthy & lanky - I hope you can touch on how it feels to operate as a tall person compared to the German counterparts. How is the legroom, how does the steering wheel interact with your legs, does it come out far enough if you have the seat pretty far back. This car, of all of those ones out there, is something that's seriously on my bucket list. Of the new sports cars on sale - this one ticks all the right boxes.

There is plenty of space for the taller folks. Look up Harrys garage review of the Evora GT410. The driver cabin space in the Emira is the same as the Eovra. Only difference is that the rear bulkhead has moved forward so there is a little less storage space behind the seats in the Emira compared to the 2+2 Evora.

I've never wanted any car as much as this one - never even looked at a Lotus before (always had that TVRness about them 😬) I've sold my V8 Audi S6 and I'm currently car-less. Wasn't really planning on getting anything for a few years as I have access to other vehicles... but... ...this has got the juices flowing - and not just a little bit. I NEED IT 😍

Thanks for the report, as usual some excellent photography and Henry's always good value. It seems that new supercars come out every day now, and it's hard to be impressed. In the era of Tesla sports performance, the specification wars seem to have been decided. But the best compliment you can give was that - It's a Lotus. It must handle brilliantly, it must be lightweight, it must let you know what's going on all the time, you should feel part of the car. The TFT screen or quality of the plastics is, I put to you, not relevant. But it's good to see Lotus aiming for the high spec fussy consumer - that's where the money is. Good luck to them 👍🇦🇺

I don't know why I thought this new Lotus was a done deal when they invited the press to the debut event 6 months ago...now Henry is driving an not quite production prototype with not quite production steering, suspension, tech and interior...probably just me?...but I'm looking forward to the Emira being a complete production reality and I am looking forward to Lotus having a well deserved revitalization...I hope it's not just a reskinned and updated to basic current production standards Evora. Lotus is a special brand with amazing cred...I am truly hopeful the reality of the Emira is everything we dream of for Lotus...great diplomatic video Henry.
