    Coming into an Emira from a 911 (not another Lotus), I absolutely love it! If the Lotus goal was to get more people to consider it that would have otherwise gone to a different brand, then I, for one, am glad that they did. My new Emira looks like a supercar in my garage compared to the understated looks of the 911.

    Just bought one last weekend with the tour dampers, which works just fine since I don't plan on tracking it or driving too aggressively. It drives like a dream, but it's not perfect. I like the simplicity of the interior. I hate being overwhelmed by buttons. They nailed that. Sometimes when I get in the car, Apple Carplay won't load up automatically like it should. I like that it has seat memory buttons, but I hate that I have to hold the button down until the seat stops moving. Also, the G-meter only displays the maximum g-forces instead of the current real-time values.

    @@user-ot6or9wr5y I would be very interested to drive one and there is a link to Lotus heritage as the Esprit was powered by a turbo 4 cyl for many years and was always the ‘4 cyl supercar’, I have also owned 2 turbo 4 cyl Esprits so not against 4 pot turbos in any way. However I don’t get why Lotus detuned it to 360bhp when the Chinese Emira Turbo gets 400bhp and the Mercedes A45 gets 420bhp. Probably to leave room for faster versions and I guess Lotus wanted the turbo to be the cheaper Emira so in their minds it had to be slower, a 400bhp Turbo would be quicker than a the V6 supercharged car. They don’t get V6 Emira in China so that’s why it is allowed more power.

    Great video Dr! Having spent a week and 1,100 miles with a V6 manual Emira on Touring damper, I agree with you completely! Having owned my Exige 410 for about 9 months, the first thing that I noticed was how Emira was not that much more easy to get in & out, there is a big gap between my anticipation knowing that Emira was catered for daily use and the reality. Emira do not have the sheer pace I'm used to from Exige, but it's not a slow car at all in fact it's still a bit too quick for public roads, 3rd gear max out is already 100 mph (tested in Mexico of course). The chassis dynamic is really good and definitely drives like a Lotus. Even my non-car guy missus was deeply impressed by the damping and comfort.

The big pull towards the Evora or the Emira, are the looks of the Emira vs the exhaust note and potential rear seats of the 410. The Evora being the tiniest smidgeon faster accelerating makes it, well... a tiny smidgeon more attractive, but there isn't much in it. I'm not as interested in owning a Porsche.

    @@harmonised8353 not an easy choice, you have to drive both and decide but no really wrong choices here, Emira V6 still sounds good to my ears. I think Evora prices have held up quite well since the Emira came along, many were predicting huge drop in values but so far so good for Evora owners. Much rarer obviously and a lot more Emiras to hit the used market over the next few years. Equally though the prices will get more tempting! I’d prob take an Emira over an Evora 400 but Sport 410 just edges it out, a bit wilder and more exciting, steers better for me and I think the 410 (non sport) rides slightly better than Emira Touring too. Evora ride and handling really is in a class of one! But Emira is close enough if the looks really do it for you it’s worth it for the grin every time you open the garage!

    @@DrPittenstein The question in my mind, is how much wilder and more exciting is the Evora 410 over the Emira? Im wondering if the difference is in reality so small, compared to other brands, that one could safely grab the car which looked more exotic, without feeling one was missing out. I have a feeling (having only driven the Evora) that whilst it may have the edge from what you and others say online, ... I have a feeling that edge might be so subtle, that one would indeed be perfectly happy with the Emira and not longing for the Evora, if an Emira purchase was made. I think the only proper way to find out would be to own and keep both for a long summer, to be able to make a totally unbiased decision. Or a small child might sway you one way or another (depending on whether they made a fuss when you put them in the boot of the Emira or not lol). The back seats of the Evora look superb, although the back of an Evora is no place for a tall person.

  • @DrPittenstein

    @DrPittenstein

    Ай бұрын

    Many thanks, more to come regarding comparisons to the Evora. Yes 500bhp and north of 7000rpm would be amazing. Manual gearbox would need to be uprated or ditched so it would be auto only or quite a lot more expensive so not the spec they could launch with but we have to hope they are planning to work towards something like that. I think a 'Final Edition' V6 with 430bhp is more likely then it will be auto only AMG turbos from there on. That engine has massive potential, makes 470bhp in the latest C63 hybrid but not sure Merc will allow that tune, they don't seem keen on sharing the 421bhp version as it is!

Pretty obvious plan for Emira S which was why they detuned it for launch Emira Turbo which was always intended to be the cheaper version, a bit awkward if it was faster than the V6 so I suspect will only get 420bhp once V6 is axed.

    I guess I see where you are coming from on the dream of Lotus Geniuses given a large budget, but I think that is something they will need to grow into, and also, making something groundbreaking or extra special like that would automatically make it a fringe choice yet again. The goal was surely to build something that more than ever is capable of tempting Porsche drivers into something different, and I think they've probably done as good as they could in that regard. Most people don't give a hoot about driving dynamics, even most Porsche drivers. They want a badge, an image. You can't create that kind of mainstream brand overnight. The next most key superficial criteria for these sorts of buyers is probably looks (or residuals Lol). Lotus residuals are usually strong, and looks... When you see a cayman driving down the road many people wouldn't give it a second look. One of these in the right colour and spec and it will turn heads and make people go "Wow!". The fact that it's still a good drivers car and true Lotus underneath is almost just a bonus. I don't think there is ever going to be anything that will tempt hardcore Lotus nerds like us out of our 430 GT's or Exiges. Even a hardcore version of this will still be heavier, regardless of how good it is. It's a nice car. I might get one when I'm too old to get in and out of the Exige (but I'd probably still buy an Evora 410 anyway!).

  • @DrPittenstein

    @DrPittenstein

    Ай бұрын

    I’m sure you’re right but I think it’s a real shame Lotus didn’t develop some clever take on adaptive suspension for their last petrol car, for a start they could have offered the tour and sport damper set up at the touch of a button rather than making people choose a fixed set up without the benefit of driving both first. I know adaptive dampers are nothing new now but I would like to see what Lotus would have done with them. In fact I’m willing to bet that was the plan originally but the costs had to be capped to get the car built for its very competitive launch price, something had to go and the bean counters scrapped it. Proved to be the right decision commercially as low initial price for ‘supercar styling’ proved to be very popular so much so they couldn’t help but hike the price. So now it’s 2015 Evora performance for 2021 Evora money!

    6'2", it would definitely be tight on headroom with a helmet on. Evora is similar with Sparco seats which is why I prefer the carbon race seats, they improve the driving position generally. It's a shame that Lotus won't even offer lightweight seats at this time. Lotus are normally quite accomodating for headroom but all those electric motors in the seats take up quite a bit of room. Hopefully you can try one for yourself soon.

    Hello! I received this comment. I can't find skid pad data. Is this correct? "Don't forget the Emira is easier to maintain with smarter body panels. Also wider front track so more stable and better front end grip. The Evora GT had less front end grip in high G corners." Thank you!

  • @DrPittenstein

    @DrPittenstein

    10 күн бұрын

    Claim about being easier to maintain due to 'smarter' body panels has no substance to it that I know about. Emira does have a wider front track and same width tyres as euro GT430 but US Evora GT has significantly more downforce especially if fitted with carbon rear engine cover (Lotus claimed 64kg for the Sport 410 which was twice what an Evora 400 made, no factory claim for Emira other than it has 'some' downforce) so find that hard to believe that the Emira had any advantage in 'high G corners'. It is interesting to note that Lotus never published a Hethel lap time for the Emira, we have to wonder why. If it was so much quicker than the outgoing Evora then surely Lotus would have wanted to make that known.

  • @DrPittenstein

    @DrPittenstein

    Ай бұрын

    Not sure what has led you to that view but Lotus did offer the Seven as a kit but that was back in the late 50’s but I guess some still like to look down on Lotus for that. The irony is the Seven is still a work of genius and was a far more capable sports car than anything else for decades. The reality of 70’s and 80’s supercars from the prestige marques was that they were unreliable, poorly made, parts bin specials with feeble brakes and had wildly exaggerated power and performance claims. The 911 Turbo beat most ‘380bhp’ Italian supercars with 260bhp but was an evil handling car so while well built was hopeless at going around corners. Lucky for supercar owners then they didn’t have trackdays because a lowly Lotus Seven kit car would have humiliated them all. The Honda NSX gave the supercar establishment a kick up the backside but sold in tiny numbers entirely down to badge snobbery. The Emira is made in an ultra modern, mostly automated production line but unfortunately (and perhaps not surprisingly) there have been some issues getting everything to work properly but the Emira should be built as well or better than any other sports car. Any kit car association is very far from the reality, go and have a tour at the factory and see for yourself.

    For me the Emira falls down on 1)not being a convertible 2)power train is not far off being at the very top of its maximum performance envelope - from engine, supercharger & gearbox perspective & 3) crucially, in respect of its emissions levels - USA market will likely limit any faster versions there via CARB (CARB has already rumoured to have delayed US car deliveries & delays in deliveries have resulted in Emira having to meet lower emissions than Evora despite being the same power train- this might explain lower RPM limit vs. Evora) & Euro 6 elsewhere may also limit any possible performance gains too. Finally 5) Lotus has already announced that Emira production will end in 2027, that’s only 3 years or so, so are Lotus really going to bother much when EV dictats are 80% EV sales by 2030? In short, as good a car the Emira is, it was only ever destined to be a ‘filler’ & that explains the lack of ‘groundbreaking’ in this car.,Thanks for posting a great vid. More Elise content please!

    Thanks good insight there and I agree Emira was just a filler which is a shame for anyone hoping the last ICE Lotus would be a game changer. Since the launch though there has been some pushback against EVs and I wonder if Lotus might extend beyond 2027, sustainable fuels could also change the picture but agree if Lotus go full steam ahead with plans to go all EV asap then we might not see faster Emiras. I’m guessing there will be a final edition V6 and it would use the 430 motor in markets that allow it. Obvious that they have been sandbagging with the turbo 4 at 360bhp when it makes 400bhp in China and 421bhp in an Merc A-Class but Emira has been so delayed I think everything has been pushed back and the clock is ticking. Can’t believe US are only just now getting Emira deliveries!

    A filler car?? Do you think they would have spent an incredible amount of time on body surfacing, interior upgrades, and shoe horning in arguably the best 4 cylinder ever made? A filler car would have been an evora with a bit more body cladding and 10 more hp....

    Not disagreeing with your closing statements - but there are two Lotus camps. The 1st one wants Lotus to remain a purist hardcore company (that would always be on the edge of bankruptcy) - and the 2nd camp (mine) wouldn't have touched Lotus previously as they just couldn't live with that level of rawness. In that sense Lotus have nailed the brief. The brief being - sell some cars - in proper numbers - and you do that by making something that appeals to a broad spectrum of people. Regarding the Cayman - I don't even turn to look when one goes past anymore - they're just too commonplace, clinical, and (to me) frankly rather dull.

    I would obviously like to see Lotus being successful which of course requires producing and selling many more cars however I don't believe it requires them to abandon their founding ethos. Lightweight engineering and innovation are just as relevant today as they ever were, more so in fact as it naturally delivers efficiency. I believe it's possible to appeal to larger numbers of people with a lightweight car relative to the competition and if an SUV is essential make sure it's the lightest in its class, that will ensure it's the best to drive.

    @@meenboli no sadly not the mostly steel Cayman is lighter than the Emira, the Eletre is no lighter than any other eSUV and neither are associated with any ground breaking innovation.

    @@DrPittenstein Fair enough - not sure the Emira was supposed to be ground breaking - just a Lotus that more people would desire - in that they have definitely succeeded. The Eletre is very very nice inside - and about the same money as other equally nice SUV's - albeit supposedly with a more Lotus-like ride. My issue with electric cars is that (Tesla aside) - we started at the top. Using the Taycan as an example, there's nowhere to go other than increasing the range - the first model already went as fast as you'd want to go. I fear that with electric cars the ground breaking has already been done. I'll be proven wrong I'm sure - but also, I'm not so sure.

    Emira hasn’t moved anything on. It has same performance as the Evora 400 from 2015.

    @@DrPittenstein Not a bad thing as that car had plenty of power to drive quickly on public roads. Really, it’s a shame that Ferrari and Lamborghini have stopped manufacturing sports cars and now only make super cars. A 308/328 was no faster than a 280ZX turbo, it was the looks and experience that set it apart. Now look at the performance gulf between their modern versions. It seems that 1/4 mile and top speed bragging rights have taken the forefront. If Ferrari made a modern Dino that had between 400-500hp, a manual gearbox, hydraulic steering, and a bent towards driver engagement they’d have a best-seller on their hands.

    @@Rex_Racer I agree that the Emira is plenty fast enough, at least for me, at least on the roads but we don’t have the right to tell anyone else what is fast enough for them. I would put the McLaren 720S in the ‘too fast’ catagory for the road and believe there are downsides associated with that (risk to licence, frustration, constant need for self- restraint) but even so, outrageous performance does have undeniable appeal for many, clearly, or we wouldn’t have so many crazy supercars on sale. Having owned several superbikes that were all far too fast it was overall a fantastic experience that I’m very glad I had. They were engineering marvels as I’m sure a 720S is also. Back in the 328 days the Emira would have been declared as far too fast too, 400bhp was 288 GTO power, there would have been calls for it to be banned just as the Lotus Carlton was with 377bhp. Yet now we have decided that it’s a sensible level! We can only choose what level of performance we enjoy and let everyone else do likewise. I don’t imagine you would want anyone telling you the Emira is far too fast and there’s no point in 180mph cars when the limit is 70mph, plenty out there who think that. Once we start declaring limits on performance the justification for any fast car quickly starts to come undone.

    @@DrPittensteinThanks for responding! I’ll attempt to clarify my previous lamentation. No, I don’t think that I have the right to dictate what the performance is of another’s vehicle, nor do I think the government should have a right to dictate what type of car I should buy. My point isn’t that such cars shouldn’t exist- I’m thrilled that they do- it’s that many of the manufacturers that made the lust-worthy cars of time gone by have eliminated a class of sports car entirely, while focusing only on cars that are too fast for some of their audience to consider. I’d like to see an expansion in their offerings, not a reduction. It’s a shame that there are only three manufacturers that still make a hydraulic steering rack (McLaren, Lotus, GMA), and a further shame that there are only four rear-mount mid-engined cars available to buy today that are paired with a manual (Boxster/Cayman, Emira, T.50, T.33). Car enthusiasts come in all flavors, from muscle car lovers to EV lovers- I begrudge non of them as I respect anyone that has a passion in their lives. I’m glad that Lotus and Porsche continue to make cars that appeal to me as useable road cars (GMA is WAY out of my league); but I’ll have to find an older Ferrari (458 and earlier) to get the joy that I, specifically, look for in a special car. Best regards, and perhaps that added context!
