Great Video. Id like to request one for the E46 M3. Lots of cars, lots of variation. Also would be interesting to see an analysis of the price history as it seems to have hit the floor back a couple of years and is now appreciating.

Now that's a difficult question. In terms of depreciation, both cars show more or less the same figures. However, the price ranges for the car are completely different. You need at least 40k for a 4C with a relatively high mileage (20k miles). For the same price, you can however almost get a brand new Elise. This means that it's likely that the 4C is already at the bottom of the depreciation curve whereas the Elise is somewhere in the middle/top. Therefore, I think that purely from a depreciation perspective, the 4c would be the better point if that price range is considered. Both cars are however awesome and each serves its own target audience.

Nice analysis. I would also like to see title quality factored in (clean, accidents, and rebuilt). Also, looks like you missed my '09 Touring that was advertised at that time for $37K with 33,800 miles.

That can indeed be the case. Not all cars which are for sale are in the data. There is also some time between the point that i take the data and actually upload the video.

Hi! I just bought the Lotus Elise Heritage edition! I will be driving it possibly once per week or twice. What do you think the value will be in possibly 10 years from now? Thanks in advance for your opinion!

Am interested in a Lotus Emira next year, but wonder what the depreciation/ value may be. Has there been any market changes since this video on Lotus lineup?

My two cents is because the elise is such a fun car to drive and relatively cheap to run. so new lotus owners keep them for longer than they would most other cars

A Lotus should be bought to be driven, if you want an investment by a Picasso. What's the point of having a sports cat your scared to drive due to putting miles on it?

Mines 2007, it has gone up 8k since bought it and I doubled the miles. (Canada). Cannot be bought anymore so prices gone up.

They are all on the up now, especially since lockdown. I paid £15k for one In Jan and now you can't find one with the same spec for less than £17k.

Would have been nice to see analysis of the European markets given the Elise has barely been sold in the US throughout its life span

Keep my Evora GT or sell and buy an Emira?

What are your thoughts on pre-ordering the new Lotus Emira? I just wonder if initial pre-orders will take a massive depreciation hit or perhaps not for the first 6 to 12 months due to high demand. Appreciate any thoughts. Peter

For cars which are very popular at their launch and have a relatively limited supply, values are often strong in the first six to twelve months (eg Porsche GT products, C8 corvette). However, if there is no scarcity or quality is not what they promised things might change.

All depends on which country. Mines increased over 7k since I bought it as it's been discontinued and only 3-4 for sale in whole country.

@@fourwheeltrader True. I am in Canada, in North America not so many models get released and now the Elise is not available.

The Elise was discontinued in 2011 or 13 due to not meeting new safety standards. That is why you dont see new cars

Thanks! I was aware of that. But I was wondering why there are so few cars for the years 2009, 2010, and 2011. Someone else in the comments suggested it might be due to limited production numbers at the end of the lifecycle.

@@fourwheeltrader There were only few brought that year. Allfof this was talked about at the Lotus Forums. If you try to purchase an exige from 2009- 2011 is the same case, super pricey and and super low numbers shipped during those years

@@karlx19 UK, not USA. Elise does not meet safety regulations here. hence the point of this thread

I would assume that the reason for less late model Elises being for sale is that less of them have been built than earlier on in the lifecycle. Secondly, if you are using US data, it might be worth noting that the Elise has not been sold in the US for quite some time.

Good point, I didn't consider the production numbers. When it comes to the newer Elises, I indeed saw that they aren't sold in the US for quite some time. The latest ones are from 2011.

Nope, there were only very few late model Elises because they stopped sales in the USA. The Elise is said to come back in 2021-22

JoTokutora What do you mean ”Nope”? On its peak year of 2005 over 4200 Elises were sold/built (global sales, not just US sales). Also, less than 20% of all Elises built have been sold in the US. The lowest numbers of Elises built have been in -96 and -13 at with just over 400 built each of those years. And if I am not mistaken, over 50% of all Elises ever sold in the US were 2005 cars, and roughly 25% were 2006 cars - the remaining 25% or so being scattered across the other years it was available in the US.

Soon, you'll have to account for the Lotus Evija effect, because the Evija will sling shot the Lotus name into the stratosphere. Lamborghini and Ferrari are concentrating on pleasing the Asian markets and have given minimal attention to the e-Hypercar market. Right now, the most reachable Lotus are the Elise, Exige and Evora. However, for each California earthquake and Florida hurricane, the Elise is becoming rarer and rarer. If you want an a priori model to compare the potential value trajectory of the Elise, the 1985 and 1986 Porsche 911 come to mind. A driver's car with great handling, relatively low production and sleek design. As for the wide range in price for similar models with similar characteristics? Two reason: Asian owners and military owners. Asian owners have been dumping the Elise with the anticipation of buying the new Toyota Supra, I've heard this directly from this category of owners. As for military owners, when they get reassign to another location, especially abroad, they have to fire sale their cars. So if you want a deal on a Elise, go to a military base car sale. Again, in the long-run, looking back at the mid-80's 911's and the respective value arch of those cars, as well as the Evija making the Alpha Romero 4C irrelevant to the Elise because of projected brand provenance and the trend of going to an electric drive train, It will not be too long before the Elise has its QVC moment, it just requires the attrition of deadwood owners. As for the which car to analyze next? Re-analyze the Elise with the above information. The Evija is going to lift all things Lotus.

You have some good insights about the Lotus market. I didn't hear about these effect related to Asian and military owners before. I also think that the Evija will help to improve the image of Lotus but im not sure it will be to the extent as you describe it. With some of the new investments they receive, I think they have a good opportunity to come back with some more 'affordable' models which integrate the design and some technique of the Evija. This i think could be a game changer for lotus.

Why is now the time to buy? UK market would be interesting given it's a UK car. Thanks

The analysis shows that year is not really a factor anymore in determining the price. Hence, if you buy it and use it as a weekend car, you most likely won't lose any money on depreciation. The exige is by the way still on my to-do list ;). Most likely I will base that analyses on the German on UK market.

@@fourwheeltrader Yes unfortunately this one didn't show the last 10 years of Elise. Exige should be good but a bit out of my price range for all but the cheapest models. Do think the UK market behaves the same as they US and the S3 model behaves the same as the S2?

I'm looking at buying at the moment. In the UK you can still find turbo S2s as low as £15k, but not many. They are going up about 1-2k a year! So If I ran one daily to work which is only 9 miles, it will pay for itself lol

I love the look of the Alfa but the Elise/Exige are better drivers cars

Not really the best market to analyse the elise given so many local external influencing factors that other markets didnt have and a low number of samples in respect of world wide elise's on sale.

im never selling so who cares about depreceation😂😂😂😂
