Yes it was and I had privlage of doing body work on one when it was only few months old was scared to drive it in work shop they were the dogs bollocks and would love to have one but to much money

Check out the Lotus Carlton prototype. Same basic design (actually the other way round) but multi-piece.👍

It's still a real monster for a saloon, it just changed the perspective of this kind of cars. Just showed that Lotus could do an outrageous fast saloon that beat a lot of records including the top speed for the time, during a lot of years.

They say that the lotus Carlton is still accelerating to this day

My grandad has one of these, he bought it for 15 grand. It’s now worth around 100 grand 🤯

@@scd The Transmission from the C4 ZR1 in this car, was mated to a Lotus designed, and handbuilt LT5 engine. V8 Quad cam 4V per cylinder, it was a stunning engine. But because it only ever appeared in an American Vehicle, it's unknown outside of the US. Pity it was never slotted into a Lotus Carlton and Esprit in the UK

Better late than never. Excellent car.

Absolutely amazing. Cars after 2000s are just not the same. Being born in 93, most of my peers' dreams are new BMWs or MBs while they appreciate new supercars. I'd take a drive over anything new is Delta Integrale, Thema 8.32, Lotus Carlton, anything from Ferrari until 355. I love JDMs as well, my dream car was RX7 FD for years, I love rallye cars, from Fulvia to 2nd gen Impreza. But the newer cars are just not the same.

I had one for 6 years in the 90s before I went abroad and had to sell it. Best car I've ever driven. I'm back now and wishing that I'd never sold it. Oh well....

These are the icons that are legends but forgotten.

Never forgotten for me. If I see suspicious Opel in British Racing Green on the road I turn my head faster than speed of light.

@@harshithsadhana7475 Yeah it was found in a canal few years back the car was taken to a scrapyard local to the canal stripped and crushed 40RA the reg number was given back to its owner and is now on a yellow Hyundai

What a beautiful motor

It’s actually a myth that the car was speed limited, with a redline in fifth override. They weren’t limited at all, and will do over 180 mph. The lack of electronic speed limiting in a time when others were beginning to do that is part of this car’s mystique. A Mercedes, or even a BMW M5 was limited to 155. But Vauxhall/Opel/Lotus gave no shits.

I have only seen one in my life, It was 20 years ago on the A1 near Newcastle.

My dream car. It made every super car at the time look pathetic. And only true car enthusiasts know what it is. It dosent get better.

Was this a Shropshire car? Reg looks familiar to Lotus Carlton seen regularly in Shrewsbury 20 plus years ago.

The Lotus Carlton is faster than a Testarossa. The Ferrari does 160 with 0-60 in about 5.8 seconds, Lotus is limited at roughly 180 and does 60 in just under 5 seconds.

200bhp in the 90's in a road car was considered absolutely outrageous, but 377php was super car destroying............And that's what it did.

This is a sleeper!

In 1992 we had two of these engines at college, both stock and both made just over 400bhp

What a beauty..

I will never buy new cars would be happy with this and a nova gsi.

That was one of many of Vauxhall's & Lotus partnerships I don't think the Frogs will allow another one for today

I'd still drive and enjoy the HELL out of this car over a lot of other common and newer vehicles that may be faster, but they just don't provide that visceral driving experience!

I worked for Vauxhall at their Luton HQ in the early 90s and one was delivered for the then MD...and was promptly destroyed by one of his over enthusiastic, less talented underlings near Luton Airport. He was never seen again after getting discharged from the L&D Hospital.

Two weeks ago I found Opel Senator 1993 restored like a brand new car. I have been thinking about it since then. Hopefully I can negotiate about the price and convince the owner.

Got a 90 24 valve gsi with 90,000km and a 91 12 valve gsi with 32,000km on it. Always dream of a lotus but here in little ole NZ I think that’s pretty much impossible:( Mine are minters and owned then both for over 20 years…but still worth next to nothing here

They keep saying "faster than a Testarossa," which must refer to top speed because this thing would demolish one in almost any race.

To be sure, that's originally an Opel Omega!!! and not a 'Vauxhaul Carlton', my british friends. :p 😁😇❤ BUT it's by far THE BEST coorperation between an iconic british company, here Lotus and a long history carmanufacturer from Germany with Opel!! :) They created a blast combination of their both company and racing knowledge to a underdog supercar rival many people even didn't know even exisists. :D

Can't understand why so many people call it lotus omega/carlton when it's an opel omega lotus/vauxhall carlton lotus never sold by lotus but by Opel/Vauxhall

It is a shame Vauxhall/Opel never developed a 2/3-door fastback coupe / 2-door door convertible version of the 1986+ Carlton/Omega to directly replace the 1978-1986 Opel Monza as well as precede the later V Platform-based Australian-built 2001-2006 Holden/Vauxhall Monaro, let alone produced a Lotus version of such a car.

But it still one of the fastest top speed in 2020

True the police just acquired a two million pound persuit helicopter one of its first chases on TV was a Carlton turbo they had to over the radio say they can't keep up it was hugely embarrassing two million blasted by something £48 grand

The cars did not have a torque limiter in first gear ,neither did they have a limiter on 5th gear which was removed if you redline it in that gear, 6th gear is geared for 140mph as the hearing is so tall so top speed of 186mph was achieved in 5th gear not 6th if you get to top speed in 5th and put the car into 6th you will loose speed down to 140 mph

Vauxhall.... what went wrong... this was their time... never liked any of their cars after this.....they could do all this again.. even the Carlton GSi as a normal car was nice... the alternative to the Merc’s and BMW’s etc..
