LOTR The Return of the King - The End

Ойын-сауық

The very last scene of the Lord of the Rings-trilogy, with Sam returning home to Hobbiton after Frodo left Middle-Earth at the Grey Havens. (HD Blu-ray)
Another perfectly used passage from the books, and Peter Jackson ends this beautiful trilogy with the exact same words from Sam as J.R.R Tolkien did in the books: "Well, I'm back."

Believe it or not but the LoTR production wasn't that far from The Hobbit one (quite chaotic, even if it was more for the hobbit), so yeah it would be actually very possible that he thought something like this.

There are so many reasons this ending is so perfect but the reason which really touches me is the fact that the story does not end with Frodo who is essentially the central character to the entire story. Frodo's journey is complete indeed by the end, but the final images are what Frodo wants to leave us with. It is not an image of everything he achieved for himself and his legacy, he ends his story in the joy and sense of closure that once he is gone, he has secured and ensured the happiness and livelihood of all those he set out to save. As if to say in his final moments, that's what allows him the final closure he needs, his loved ones are going on and so in spirit he shall with them.

  • @lightinthedusk

Exactly. And I think that's what truly makes Frodo a hero - he sacrifices everything not to gain something himself, but so that others can. He literally sacrifices the rest of his life by taking on the role of the ring bearer, because he is unable to enjoy a normal life afterwards due to how damaged he is, while all his other friends can. People keep complaining about how Frodo wasn't a hero and that Sam was the 'true hero'. But I'd argue that while Sam was heroic in the sense that he helped Frodo a lot, Sam's role was mainly that of a loyal and dedicated friend. Frodo was the hero in a bigger sense - he carried a burden no one else could, and got damaged in ways no one else did, and in the end sacrificed more than anybody. Yet he is not bitter due to this, instead he is happy that while he cannot enjoy what he saved (the Shire, Middle Earth), his friends and loved ones can. That is something a true hero would do

In 90 years of cinema, a lot of cinematic masterpieces were created. But whenever i am watching lotr, i realize, this trilogy can't be from this world. The perfection of scenery, costumes, acting, music, plot and everything else what comes along with the art of moviemaking is more than mindblowing.

You make an interesting point and it's one I've wondered as to what it means in terms of the whole story since Frodo is framed throughout to be the main character and Sam the second main character who ultimately proves to be the most heroic by the end. For me I've come to interpret the message of ending the story in this way is that not all heroes are able to move forward once they have played their part. As Frodo says, 'some hurts go too deep'. Frodo sacrificed everything and paid the ultimate price - his happy ending is that despite being unable to enjoy the world he saved, he leaves his story in the knowledge he sacrificed it to ensure the happiness of his loved ones. Sam was a true hero and is able to prosper in the new world, that indeed is his happy ending. Frodo's happy ending is knowing that he gave that to him. Both are different but equally powerful. :)

I don't think that meant Sam was the true hero. Frodo is the main hero, in the sense that he had the biggest and hardest burden to carry, and he also paid the biggest sacrifice - everyone was able to have a normal life afterwards, but Frodo was not. The fact that he sacrificed so much just so Middle Earth and his loved ones could be saved is testament to the fact that Frodo is the main hero. Frodo himself was unable to enjoy life in the Shire he saved, but rather his efforts would mean his loved ones could - that's a pretty heroic thing to do! Sam is also a hero, but more of a supporting hero to Frodo. Or a different kind of hero, if you like. Sam's role was to support the main hero, Frodo, through his loyalty and friendship. The whole point was that they were both heros, as were the others in the Fellowship. Each had their own roles to play, and it was a team effort. Just because Sam got the happy ending doesn't mean he was more of a hero than Frodo. Frodo just got the more "tragic" hero ending, but that doesn't mean he was any less of a true hero than Sam

A few extra details from Tolkien on what happened to the fellowship after. Frodo's last few years in middle-earth were spent trying to live peacefully and heal from the intense trauma he had gained from his journey. He had a six month tenure as deputy mayor of the Shire, allowing the previous mayor to recover from his wounds from the Scouring of the Shire, and allowed Sam and Rosie to move in with him at Bag End. Frodo was in great pain from his injuries, and got sick on the anniversaries of when he was stabbed by the nazgul and stung by Shelob. He spent his time writing down his experiences in the red book, which became "The Lord of the Rings." As a ring-bearer, he was given special permission to travel with the elves and Gandalf to Valinor in the west. There he could finally live in peace as his wounds would not trouble him. Sam would join him many years later. After Frodo left, Sam was elected as mayor of the shire, and was so popular he went on to be reelected seven times. He had thirteen children with Rosie (Hobbits have BIG families). They lived in Bag End, which Frodo had given him along with the red book. When Rosie died, he left for Valinor and presumably reunited with Frodo, at age 102. As a ring-bearer, if only for a while, he had been granted special permission too. He left the book with his eldest daughter Elanor. Merry went on to take a leadership role in the Shire, inheriting the title of "Master of Buckland" (the head of his family). He lived it up in kind of bachelor lifestyle for a while, before settling down. Merry married a woman named Estella Bolger, and eventually became a historian of the Shire. He studied the language of the Hobbits and their relationship with the languges and dialects of men in Rohan and Gondor, putting down on paper many records of life in the Shire that otherwise might have otherwise been lost. Mainly because Tolkien was also a linguist and liked that kind of thing. Along with Sam's friendly policies towards the kingdoms of men, it was an era of better relations and understanding between halflings and men. He also had an interest in cataloguing the distribution of flora and fauna in the Shire versus the kingdoms, particularly lots of different kinds of pipeweed. He returned to Rohan and Gondor with Pippin much later, and died there. When Aragorn died, he was entombed next to him. Pippin also enjoyed a lifestyle of luxury as a thrain and master of his house, before settling in with Diamond of Long Cleeve. They named their son Faramir. In his last years, Pippin returned to Rohan and Gondor with Merry, and was also entombed beside Aragorn when he died. Having had such bonding experiences with the realms of men, and being taller than all the other hobbits thanks to the entdraught, Merry and Pippin seemed to fit more in with men than the other hobbits. They were happier in their last years, reuniting as friends in a place they felt was like home, before passing peacefully. Aragorn ruled Gondor for 120 years as King Elessar II, and sought to reestablish the kingdom of Arnor in the north. He married Arwen and fostered several children, his first being a son named Eldarion, who would succeed him after his death. The line of kings descended from him would become known as The House of Telcontar ("telcontar" being an elvish word for "strider") Elessar's reign was characterized by expansion and strong foreign relations. He reestablished the Kingdom of Arnor in the north, and began to create better relations between Men, Elves, and Dwarves. The Shire was made a protected land under his rule, with no men allowed to enter it save with his permission. Expanding the realms of men into the North, he later took the title High King of the Reunited Kingdom. In the south and east, he led campaigns to recapture Gondorian land that occupied by the Easterlings and Haradrim. He died at age 220 and was buried among the other kings in Gondor. Arwen would mourn his death before returning to Lothlorien and passing away a year later. Gimli led an expedition into the glittering caves, the caverns behind Helm's Deep, to establish a dwarven kingdom. Their new home prospered and Gimli became its leader, the "Lord of the Glittering Caves." He and his people took part in the reconstruction of Gondor, replacing the ruined gate of Minas Tirith with a new one made of mithril and steel, probably one of the most beautiful (and expensive) pieces of dwarven craftsmanship in middle-earth. He remained good friends with Legolas, inviting him to his kingdom to see the beautiful crystals that grew there. He later visited Fangorn forest with his best friend. Eventually, Legolas invited him to sail west, and he left for Valinor with his friend, being the only dwarf to ever go there. Apparently his deeds were enough to convince the Valar to allow him passage. Legolas helped regrow the devastated forests of Ithilien, the green land beside Mordor where Frodo and Sam met Faramir. The woodland elves eventually established a colony there, though the region was technically in Gondor's territory (Aragorn gave it to Faramir, and his line would continue to rule it). He remained best friends with Gimli, going to see the Glittering Caves, which left him speechless, and inviting Gimli to see Fangorn Forest. Legolas stayed in Ithilien helping restore the forests until Aragorn's death, when he built a ship and invited Gimli to go along with him to the west. Gandalf spent the two years between the end of the war and leaving middle-earth traveling around, letting himself have some time to rest. He went to have a long talk with Tom Bombadil (who wasn't in the movies), and we have no idea what they discussed. Eventually he traveled with Frodo and the other elves (possibly with Shadowfax the horse) across the sea to Valinor. He was likely given a hero's welcome, as the only wizard to stay true to his mission to protect the free peoples and defeat Sauron. His form as an old man was cast off and he was finally given some peace, after 2000 years in middle-earth. The immortal members of the Fellowship (Gandalf and Legolas), plus most of the other elves we see like Elrond and Galadriel, would live in Valinor for presumably eternity. The hobbits and Gimli would pass away at an unspecified time.

And Peter Jackson, he certainly had the touch to put that on the screen...

It was never made crystal clear in the books, but I believe Sam's spirit had also been wounded by all that he suffered while helping Frodo and carrying the Ring for a day or so, but his wounds weren't as severe and so he was able to live happily until he sailed to Valinor.

I saw a really great analysis once that got into the way LotR is tructurallly different form many works because the ending of the Plot (the events and conflicts that center the narrative) and the ending of the Story (the emotional throughline of the characters) are really far from one another. The Plot ends when the Ring is destroyed, Sauron is defeated, and Aragorn is crowned king. The Story ends when Sam says "Well, I'm back."

Full of darkness and danger they were, and sometimes you didn't want to know the end, because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? Tolkien doesn't actually tell us that. In "The Tale of Years," he says only that after his wife Rose's death, Samwise leaves Bag End. He is last seen at the Tower Hills, where he gives the Red Book of Westmarch to his daughter Elanor. After that, he disappears. It is a traditional belief among Elanor's descendants that Sam went to the Grey Havens and passed over the sea to the Undying Lands, but Tolkien does not say whether that really happened. However, I choose to believe that Sam did reach Valinor, and that he was reunited with Frodo there. And so does every other Tolkien fan that I have ever met.

But Sam turned to Bywater, and so came back up the Hill as day was ending once more. And he went on, and there was yellow light, and fire within; and the evening meal was ready, and he was expected. And Rose drew him in, and set him in his chair, and put little Elanor upon his lap. He drew a deep breath. ‘Well, I’m back,’ he said.”

What I love about this ending is that it’s not completely happy or completely sad. Sam has just experienced an enormous loss saying goodbye to Frodo that will hurt for a very long time, and yet despite that loss, he has gained so much. Frodo cannot be a part of Sam’s future in the Shire, and there will always be a gaping hole where he should be, but Sam has a new life and family because Frodo saved Middle-earth and made it possible. It’s both tragic and hopeful, both bitter and sweet. It’s life.
