I just realized that when Frodo says "I can't remember the taste of food, or the sound of water . . . " he's echoing what Gollum remembers about his transformation from Smeagol. "But we forgot the taste of bread, the sound of trees, the softness of the wind." The ring eventually takes all that away, even if you rarely or never wear it. The best thing about the Lord of the Rings trilogy is that when you watch them as a kid, they're these amazing fantasy adventures with epic battles, cool heroes, and scary monsters. When you get older and look at them, they are still all those things, but also touching and deep stories of friendship, hope and self-sacrifice. It's almost unbelievable how you can revisit these movies over the years without them ever losing any of the greatness and magic.

It's SO CLOSE to the theme that plays whenever the Shire is shown or mentioned, but it's just slightly off, as if the flute itself is trying its hardest to remember the shire but just can't seem to get the melody right. It is the craft of reflecting the story with the music done to absolute perfection.

Omg. Everyone talks about Sean Astin’s acting in this scene (deservedly so; he’s fantastic), but I also cannot believe Elijah Wood didn’t even get nominated for an Oscar. This is some of the greatest acting ever captured on film; his vulnerability, exhaustion, despair, and fear are SO real here. Especially when he says “I can see him with my waking eyes!” The panic in his voice and terror on his face practically illustrate what he’s describing, to the point where we can almost see what he’s seeing, just through his body language. What an absolutely phenomenal performance.

1:49 that “Come on!” brings tears to my eyes. They’re near the end, and it’s only getting harder and harder for Frodo. Sam understands this and will do whatever it takes to help him. Sean Astin's portrayal of his growing anger at his friend being tormented by the ring is great acting. You can really see him resolving as Frodo babbles his fear and desperation that NOTHING is going to stop them from being RID OF IT. The rhythm is the same, with some parts sped or slowed. Just as frodo can remember the shire but not what it feels, smells, tasted like, the music can remember the shire, but not what it sounded like. Absolute brilliance.

'I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you and it as well. So up you get! Come on, Mr. Frodo dear! Sam will give you a ride. Just tell him where to go, and he'll go.' As Frodo clung upon his back, arms loosely about his neck, legs clasped firmly under his arms, Sam staggered to his feet; and then to his amazement he felt the burden light. He had feared that he would have barely strength to lift his master alone, and beyond that he had expected to share in the dreadful dragging weight of the accursed Ring. But it was not so. Whether because Frodo was so worn by his long pains, wound of knife, and venomous sting, and sorrow, fear, and homeless wandering, or because some gift of final strength was given to him, Sam lifted Frodo with no more difficulty than if he were carrying a hobbit-child pig-a-back in some romp on the lawns or hayfields of the Shire." - J. The whole Frodo & Sam relationship was based on WW1 officers and their batmen- regular soldiers who were assigned to assist officers. Part of the job of a batmen was to protect their assigned officer during combat, essentially they were to act as their bodyguard. You can definitely see that dynamic between Frodo & Sam, though the class distinction element is played up a lot more in the books than in the films, with Frodo being an upper class ‘gentle-hobbit’ and Sam being an ordinary gardener. Tolkien served as an officer during the war, and the relationship he had with his men inspired a lot of the Frodo & Sam relationship. He gained a lot of respect for the ordinary working class people he shared a trench with, which is why he ended up making arguably the most heroic character in the Lord of the Rings someone who was very much working class.

The reason some people think that is because whenever 2 guys have a deep bond and friendship, some people think that they must be homosexuals. This is also thought of by pro-gay people as well. For example, if you're familiar with the Ace Attorney franchise, some fans think that Phoenix Wright and Edgeworth are gay just because they have a strong bond and even talk about their feelings and express that they may be very happy to see each other, and I find those shippers very annoying because they don't understand how deep and strong brotherhood can be, they think that straight guys can only be casual with each other.

I cry twice in this scene. One is the obvious tears for Sam and his great love and loyalty. But I always cry because of how absolutely broken Frodo is. His response always manages to break my heart. “No, Sam. I can't recall the taste of food, nor the sound of water, nor the touch of grass. Instead I'm... naked in the dark. There's nothing. No veil between me and the wheel of fire! I can see him... with my waking eyes!”

0:18 is the most powerful image in the films for me. Sam, himself almost out of strength, hugging an utterly spent Frodo in his arms and looking up Orodruin. Two small Hobbits, worn out, alone, laying in the volcanic wastes on the slopes Sauron’s mountain, in the midst of the Dark Lord’s realm. The sense of hopelessness is overwhelming. And then a hope beyond hope is fulfilled.

It's the MEANING! It's not just the virtues symbolized here, but also the fact that it feels these true virtues were only realized in an ancient and noble time. The scene is like watching a legend unfold, bro, like ancient history that none who came after deserve to be in the same world for. The sad truth is that the intricacy and depth of this kind of history was surely present in noble civilizations in our own world thousands of years before, but are forgotten and distorted history of our own.

Sean Astin really should've been nominated for an oscar. Sure he played Sam in the previous two, but it was in this film where he gave the best performance out of everyone, showing a hobbit that didnt believe he was the hero, yet truly was by simply being strong, true and unwilling to give up, exhausted or not, even if it killed him. Seans performance in this film stood out over the others and he wasnt even nominated. Crime against Art.

Fantasy never gets the recognition it deserves because it's not about real life struggle. If Lord of the Rings would have been a real story or based on a real story Sean Astin would've gotten a nomination for sure but only morons care about that pretentious award that actually means nothing. An award like that should reward excellence irregardless of other's excellence and if in one year no one matches that excellence no one should get that award. There are movies that deserved the oscar for Best Picture but didn't get it because there was a slightly better one and there are movies that won because the rest were weaker. But both will be seen as the same.

In the book we never see the awakening scene of Frodo - which I guess must be added in the movie bc its so typical "movie hero scene" or whatever :) but for me the more difficult and serious awakening of book-Sam should be given to movie-Frodo. The last half hour of this movie hits so hard. The more I give of myself to people and things I honestly shouldn't, the more I understand how immensely heavy this task was for these hobbits. They literally left a life of song, cheer, peace, and tranquility all out of a promise they made to their dear wizard friend. As they get closer to Mt. Doom, Sam and Frodo begin to accept that this task may very well cost them their lives, despite already sacrificing so much. Merry and Pippin apart from each other and wishing for nothing more than to be back in the Shire with their best friends. They left behind their home and their happiness to save a world and many a people they owed absolutely nothing to. They endured so much grief, violence, fear, and just downright chaos when they knew nothing of such things. They did this purely out of their hearts, and to keep going when every part of you just wants to turn back, run away, or end the suffering...THAT is what makes these small creatures, here, the mightiest of their group.
