LOTR: How the Witch-King's look was COMPLETELY changed!
One of the significant changes in the Battle of Minas Tirith was the redesign of the Witch-King. Initially based on John Howe's paintings, his look was altered because it resembled Sauron too closely, causing confusion. The final design emphasized his identity as a dark rider with a distinct helmet and an intimidatingly large mace, as Peter Jackson (the director of the Lord of the Rings movies) wanted. This redesign gave the Witch-King a unique look, weapon, and fighting style.

The witch king nodding in agreement at Peter Jackson 😂
Welp, time to rewatch lotr for 15000th time.

Extended editions, back to back, no bathroom breaks or a series of mirrors leading to the bathroom, so you don't miss anything. Enjoy!!

The cinema in my nearest city screened the three extended editions back to back (with some breaks lol) some time ago. It was magnificent. Wouldn't mind doing it every year.
I agree, this change was appropriate and makes him look cooler.
Witch-king looked more like Morgoth than Sauron
In a behind the/making of stuff from the DVD They talked to the prop guy that made, he said he came with one of the proto types thinking he was gonna get laughed at for making the mace head to big. Peter looked at him and just said "Bigger." xD
Fun fact: the lord of the rings return of the king video game has this design in the game. It has a few preproduction elements since the game was supposed to release around the movie. As a kid, I always wondered why things were different than the theatrical version.

I was about to correct but than had to check for myself first - and you're right. I would've sworn he's the same as in the movie. Nice piece of trivia :D

@@darthjesus7079 the game has some video and behind the scenes footage from the extended editions as well. Mouth of sauron is an example that comes to mind.

I was thinking about that too! I always thought it was weird that the witch king looked so different in the game!
Just saw this gem in theaters again after only seeing it there once back in 2001, 2002, and 2003 for each movie respectively. Seeing Two Towers on the big screen again was like a time machine back to 02!

That’s because it is.
one of my favorite characters in the series.
The flail was a bit too big for my taste. I prefer his The Rise of the Witch-King design which basically mixes these two designs (armor, mace+sword, new helmet).
Those are Morgoth pictures
Perfect change
That one image is of Ungoliant and Melkor, not the Witchking.

Yes just before attacking the trees
it would've been cool to see a headless witchking with his flaming crown, but this design is cool too
Well that explains why he looked so different in the video game
There's evidence of this design in the Return of the King video game, as that's the design they used. I was always confused as a kid, thinking "Wait, that's not the Witch King's helmet..."
As a dumb kid, I still thought this character was supposed to be Sauron 😅
Well jokes on them because I still thought it was Sauron 😂
Fun fact, in the EA game the Return of the King, the witch king looks like PJ his first design choice!
This Scene was in a cutscene of the game^^
it's the battle of the Pelllenor Fields, not the battle of Minas Tirith
Recent sub. Keep up the great LotR content
in the LOTR return of the king for ps2 too
Cool but that's not a mace, it's a flail. So they didn't redesign his mace, they changed it to something else.
It was funnier to see the mace trio up Peter Jackson into nearly falling flat onto the floor front of himself lol. ❤
Really cool 😅😊
Why so many dislikes?
I still want the Witch King’s vambraces and sword. Fortunately, I can find a 3d print of his sword on Etsy. Unfortunately, I can’t find the vambraces anywhere…
The mace was too big.
If you want to find out whether the Witch King’s weapons are realistic or not, I have a video coming out 3 days from now… if this comment is more than 3 days old, it’s out right now!
One thing I hate with most fantasy movies is the lack of depth to the bad guys. You don't fully understand their motives, they are just "bad" for no apparent reason.
@Cosper79

That's the point of most bad guys. They have no reason to be bad. Making villains that have a reason behind their madness rarely works.

No one cares why they're bad, they only exist as an obstacle for the hero, and you're not meant to root for them.

Yep, if you want to watch a 5 hour 30min movie go right ahead.
too bad one hobbit thrusted shank in the leg left one of the most powerful beings in middle earth completely incapacitated, looking at a sword shoved into his face..could have made his death a lot cooler
The huge flail is probably the only ridiculous thing in this entire trilogy. It always takes me out of the immersion! It's so stupid...
LMAO he talks about the witch king but shows morgoth and ungoliant 😂😂😂😂😂😂 C'mon dude, get your facts straight. 😂

It was Sauron originally. Aragorn was meant to fight Sauron in physical form at the black gate. But they changed it to an armored troll instead. Watch the appendices!
