    It was fun to watch, I love how beautiful it looks. I also loved how everything was halted fir one plane despite this being more of a Pan Pan than a matter of life and death. I feel like in most videos, ATC continues to reduce delays by letting others land. Each one has their pros and cons but I think halting everything reduces stress and let’s there be time to focus on what must be done

    @@nicolasbilal8769 Strikes me as a bit counterproductive, from a safety perspective, to make a couple of dozen planes eat into their fuel reserves when the emergency aircraft has asked to be kept away from other traffic while they run checklists. If you know it's going to be 15 or 20 minutes before the emergency aircraft is ready to shoot an approach I don't really know why you'd want to stop other planes landing while that's happening. All the controller has to do is tell the emergency aircraft "hey, let me know five minutes before you're done with your checklists and I'll start clearing the airspace for you".

  • @mkkoper

    @mkkoper

    Well. Assuming they would follow your suggestion what would happen if other planes keep on landing and the one which is on hold needs to land immediately due to some new critical circumstances related to the failure?

  • @philwoodward5069

    @philwoodward5069

    @@mkkoper You'd clear the emergency aircraft for an immediate approach, naturally, but it would still take time for it to reach the airport so there would be time to get other traffic out of the way. And to counter your imaginary scenario with one of my own, what if one of the planes that was diverted subsequently develops flight control problems and has to hold and run checklists before shooting an approach? Their fuel reserves will be much less than they should be because of the earlier holding and diversion, limiting their options and giving them less time to diagnose and address their problems before attempting to land. I just think your scenario is not especially likely and could, in any case, be responded to perfectly adequately should it occur, so it doesn't need to be pre-empted. Diverting flights is not only a costly pain in the arse for a lot of people, doing it unnecessarily is also not the best thing for safety.

    @@pistonburner6448 :-D Well, it was a pretty standard situation compared to all the other videos. I was not surprised when ATC did not interpret "we have trim issues" as the nature of emergency, because they are probably more used to hear phrases like: "we have technical issues". (But there is also at least one video where ATC struggled to figure out a "trim runaway" issue. Which is basically the opposite issue.) ATC seems to be totally fine with the >less specific As you know, when someone declares an emergency, ATC >always Passenger planes are not allowed to transport dangerous goods at all. Which is why this question is usually answered by default. So I assume that she just asked by habit or that it could have been cargo as well for some reason. So I guess there is nothing fancy here.

So I am not sure how your "dangerous goods don't matter" is supposed to fit into this equation. This is the most important information for fire and rescue services to expect/handle/survive the worst. Like any containers, facilities, trucks, bottles, ... with dangerous goods need to be declared as such, for that very reason. Which is why fire services also need the amount of fuel to deal with, wherever fuel is involved.

    What sorts of factors determine whether or not arrivals/departures can continue when there is an emergency aircraft inbound? Sometimes I'll see things seem to continue relatively normally, but on the other end of the spectrum we have this where the airport is closed entirely.

    Perhaps airport slots to do with the IFPS system? Notice that there were no departures from Warsaw during the emergency, airport possibly did not have enough stands or gates to take any incoming traffic. Also the traffic could have been relatively low following the current arrivals so it's better to allow the emergency traffic to land successfully first just in case another traffic causes an accident. I used to work as an Area Controller trainee in Warsaw so each case is treated on a case by case basis.
