I lost someone, and Lord it almost killed me when I experienced that horrible feeling the first time. I did'nt know what James Brown was talking about when I was nine years old but I soon learned what he was talking about when it hit me from the blind side. Ounch !!!!!!!

Not many can sing from the very pit of their soul like James Brown could. I lost someone, Please, please, Bewildered, If you leave me I'll go crazy and many, many more. But more impressive James Brown was able to re invent his music over the years, from I feel good to Super Bad.

My mother was at this '62 Apollo show, and brought me back one of those 8 x 10 autographed photos...and it was in color! I treasured that photo! I was about 8 or 9 then.

JB produced this with his own $5,000 in funds as I understand because his label owner at Cincinnati's KING Records wouldn't drop a dime into the project. This has to be one of the best albums of all times, this is an icon in history that lays the groundwork for everything else JB, IMO, would do in the future. 1962, and bro Brown could not get radio airplay, the speaker attached outside the record shop is how we heard new records like this. When I look back, shame on America & thank you Europe.

On this day in 1962 {January 28th} "Lost Someone"* by James Brown peaked at #2* {for 4 non-consecutive weeks} on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart... The first week it was at #2, the #1 record for that week was "I Know (You Don't Love Me No More)" by Barbara George, and for it's 2nd, 3rd, and 4th weeks at #2, the "Duke of Earl" by Gene Chandler was in the top spot... James Joseph Brown Jr. passed away at the age of 73 on December 25th, 2006... May the 'Godfather of Soul' R.I.P. * "Lost Someone" was James Brown's second of six of his records to peak at #2 on the Hot R&B Singles chart...

I just read half of his autobiography in a couple of days. He speaks well! His biggest ealry influence was Louis Jordan.

Man, I didn't know that. This brother was ahead of the curve then in the late 50s early 60s but I remember him talking about being impressed and influenced by the late musician/band leader, Jimmy Lunceford, who was an earlier advocate of black musicians owning their own creative work. Unlike many others, James Brown's live performance recordings were magnetic in drawing my interest to him well before I saw him live or before we had a radio station that played his music in my state and city.

What I didn't realize until now was, was that Brown was massive in 1962, even before that! He was already a national success before the parker brothers joined and he was being shafted all along. He wasn't getting the dues that he deserved, he was being ripped off by producers and promoters every where. Hi self determination to make things fair and stop being treated like a second class citizen is really inspiring.

Well, you figure he came out with his signature,Please, Please, Please in around 1955. You can tell how sharp his band was by this time,1962, he had his thing together. James Brown it was noted during the early 60s had one of the best large bands in the business. But you are right, radio was still for all intent and purposes segregated, so he sure wasn't getting his fair play on but a few black stations. By the time I was doing business he owned about 4 of the 125 black stations out of 7,500.

Louis Jordan may well have been a big influence to James Brown as far as showmanship was concerned, however, his comments regarding Jimmy Lunceford was made publicly years ago and was related to his advocacy of controlling one's own creativity. That expression let me know that Brown was thinking serious business, which later I noted while in the radio advertising business would be manifested in his ownership of several sun up-sun down radio stations in the southern US.
