To bad a lot of the mom and pop ski places are gone. They were the teachers of the skiing boom of 60,70 and 80s. Then everyone left to the bigger places. Mild winters never help either. I learn at buckaloons in youngsville PA. Gone now.

Avery! I am enjoying your series! I have skied at least 33% of the old hills that you speak of; thank you. I appreciate your understanding of the equipment and the history. My home ski area where I learn to ski: Denton Hill. Steepest slope in the east 66% grade. Has been purchased and hopefully will be back online and skiing again. I skied there in the 70s and I’m hoping to make some runs again before I can’t… Thank you for all of your videos, you brought back some beautiful memories.❤

Thanks for the video. Snow Bowl was one of the first places I learned to ski when I was a kid in the late 60s and early 70s. I never actually took any lessons there (I took a few lessons in other places), but my brother and I used to ski a lot on the trail marked #1 on the map you show at 0:23 to 0:30. That slope or trail had its own chair lift, which was the first chair lift I was ever on. There was another longer chair lift that went to the top of the mountain along slope #10. There was also a T-bar lift between trails #6 and #11 (there may have been a rope tow on slope #9 as well, but I don’t recall that for certain). Snow Bowl was a great little ski area, and as you said, it also had a nice lodge. It was such a shame that it abruptly closed down. The Northern New Jersey/Southern New York region needs another ski area, as Mountain Creek, as good as it is, gets way too crowded these days with busloads of people coming in from the city. Indeed, besides Mountain Creek, the only other ski areas around here now are Mount Peter in Warwick NY and Campgaw in Darlington. Snow Bowl, Tuxedo Ridge, and a little place called Craigmeur near Hamburg have all long ago closed up. If Snow Bowl is on public land, I’m wondering if there could be some efforts to try to revive it.

The Fireplace at 4:27 was the old ski school building in the photo below. There is a path on the left (which would be behind the remains of the ski school building, which was covered in snow when you were there that would take you past the remains of the lodge. Pretty much all that is left is the cement and stone lower section.

I skied at Snow Bowl when I was young. I was about 8 to 11 years old in the late 1960's when my mom would drive us there in our station wagon to ski. The description you gave fits my memory. If you were standing at the bottom of the slope and looking upward, the expert slope was on the left, the intermediate slope was in the middle, and the beginner slope was on the far right. The expert slope had a steep sections with moguls. There were trails that weaved between the expert run and intermediate run. Skis back then had cable bindings and boots were leather with laces. If we managed to get up really early, we drove a bit farther to Great Gorge. Vernon Valley was the newer place next to Great Gorge. Vernon Valley had fancy new bubble chair lifts that you could pull down over the chair and keep the wind out. Good memories. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for sharing the memory! That section was the roughest on the way down. Those moguls will still form even today it seems.

See i was born 1975 and that was really horrid for them to close 10 years in that time. Plus I didn't move to PENNSYLVANIA until I was 8 years old so that was missed and it could have been enjoyed had it stayed maintained and open 20 more years.

You must use touring/ crosscountry/ telemark or split boards to ride Snow Bowl. No uphill hiking or snowshoe to ride in Mahlon Dickerson reservation. Helmets required at all times.

The opening date is wrong in the video. The area opened in 1964, not 62.
