Memories gone by...my parents bought one of the 1st 3 homes at the "top" of Timber Hill. We could ski from our vacation home to the top of the mountain when conditions were right. We called it "our" mountain which brought many liberties like tobogganing the trail after close. We built 8 to 10ft jump ramps launching big air. Outrageous sled ride on a ski hill with our flexible flyer. Now live at Crested Butte. Timber Hill did us well. Rob

Wow! Our family skied here in the late 1960s. I've often wondered what happened to Timber Hill (and Buck Hill).

Learned to ski here. Small little place but always loved the feel. Was really sad when it closed.

I ran a Cub Scout ski trip to Alpine every year on Presidents day. We'd all go out to McDorf's on 447 afterwards for food and drinks. Another sad end to a great place for kids to learn to ski. I used to "Sign on" as a visiting patroller a couple of times each season.

I worked at the golf course down the street years back. However like you mentioned Shawnee and Camelback did better business so I ended up at Shawnee for a few years on the golf and ski areas.

I skied here in high school. I stayed at Twin Pines Camp in Stroudsburg for "Winter Retreat." I remember that "headwall" and "bumps" were very challenging when I was 15 years-old! And that it was icy!

I'm actually one of the locals that grew up, and still live in, this neighborhood with Alpine Mountain. My first Christmas when I moved to PA was here when I was 4. They would have kids sit with Santa and give out mad candy. Snowtubing was a total blast too. I'd be there 'til nightfall some days. I felt so lucky to have a little slope right up the hill where I lived. I made friends there and winter vacations would have an influx of tourists from the tri-state area visit over. I stopped going after middle school tho. lol then when I was a teen my friends and I would get baked in the woods sometimes around here and chill at the creek that was at the bottom. Its sad to see times change and nice community-oriented places like this go. The last time I was here was during this past summer 2020 during quarantine overlooking the grass field halfway down the hill. I'm now 25. It was a somber feeling to smoke there once more like that. Nostalgic, but bittersweet. When I got to the bottom, some old fenceposts in the snowtubing area were still there. The garages were looted and vandalized and there's lots of bees. Just..... lots of bees. There was also a dead, rotted bird too.... :/ The bridge at the bottom was dilapidated and deemed unsafe to drive through. but even then the road's been demolished with the piping system sticking out through the pavement, so it's undrivable anyways. to top it off, there's a rock blocking the only way in from the community's side. But as of right now, during the warmer seasons, people mostly just ride their ATV's and bikes on these slopes, which is always welcomed. At least the slope sees use, even if the owner's haven't done much to the property as of yet.

Great video. Just had a friend and fellow Alpine Mountain Ski Patroller send me this link. Boy does it bring back memories. Btw, the last season was the 2015-2016 season. I was a ski patroller at Alpine from 1999 until 2016. Ands speaking of abandoned ski areas, I started patrolling at Alpine Mtn after Belle Mtn in Lambertville, NJ closed in 1998. You are correct that the decay of the place is more advanced than would be expected. That is because the last owners sank money into all the wrong things: a complete gut and renovation of the lodge, turning ski patrol/instructor building into the owner's personal daycare building, and a failed ice skating rink. Instead of fixing and maintaining the the lifts and snow making system, they spent money on a new bar without a working draft system and a non-functional kitchen. Yes that spalling on the lift tower was surprising for us to see that last season too! While the downfall can in some small way be blamed on the other big areas, Alpine was criminally mismanaged for a decade before it closed. It's true that we used to get skiers from the big hills when their parking lots got full - and those people would come back time and again to this "lovely little hill in the Poconos". This was a great family friendly, beginner hill. It was a great stepping stone to bigger areas, or for those who aren't as adventurous, but still love to ski. My son grew up skiing here and the ski/snowboard instructors were great. Very sad about it's demise.

'Home Sweet Home' Was on the Ski Patrol at Alpine Mt. Enjoyed the lack of crowds and good snow. The only times the place got busy were when Camelback and Shawnee parking lots were full. Great place for families. Active racing program. Owners Lacked the resources to maintain the equipment.

Great videos! I discovered your channel and subbed a few days ago. Abandoned ski areas and lifts fascinate me. It's sad to see how so often decay and vandalism can destroy what was once a beautiful property. I had the experience a little while ago of visiting an abandoned ski resort (Fortress Mountain, AB - videos on my channel). It's truly amazing and eery. Just to see the chairs swinging in the wind, void of skiers. You're expecting to see skiers on the slopes, in the lodges, in the hotels. But instead, there is nothing left. Anway, keep up the great work, I'll be sure to watch all your videos!

This reminds me of mount peter in ny, with the road at the top and a very small mountain. I guess the reason mount peter is still surviving is because of the lack of local competition as bigger mountains such as belleayre and hunter are over 2 hours further. Tuxedo ridge which is nearby however closed down similarly to alpine mountain

Sad ending. I was the mid-Atlantic rep for Simms Snowboards during the 1986-1987 winter. Alpine Mountain was the only hill within 6 or more hours that allowed snowboarding at the time. I believe the only reason Alpine Mountain allowed snowboarding was to juice revenues; I heard the place was going out of business. Anyway, they allowed me to set up a kiosk in the gravel parking area to sell snowboards and offer lessons on the beginner hill. I did that all winter. It was fun. Met some cute girls and taught lessons, as I was the expert having snowboarded a dozen times at that point. The most interesting part was when the skiers came out of the bar late in the day and threw rocks at the kiosk and cussed me out for selling snowboards. Good times.

My wife and I took the kids there on a weekday sometime around 2006. As I recall, there was plenty of snow that year and the mountain report stated that it was 100% open. We bought our lift tickets and soon discovered that there were only 2 trails open from the top. Every other trail was roped off. It looked to me like they had been making snow overnight, and that nobody had gotten around to grooming out the new snow before the mountain opened for the day. We went back to the ticket window and asked for our money back. The woman seemed surprised that only two trails were opened and got on the phone with someone. Meanwhile, we were given a full refund and ended up at Camelback. We were kind of disappointed because it looked like a perfect place for our young kids to ski and we would’ve had the whole place to ourselves practically.

Heh. Sorry about that. I was part of the ski patrol team that kept the trails closed that weekend. You are correct: snow on the trails and they had been making snow like crazy, and they had groomed those closed trails...just very, very badly. Football sized chunks of ice (aka mega death cookies) amid the smaller death cookies and large areas that were ungroomed blown snow (you know the kind: looks soft, but you couldn't break it with a jackhammer). After surviving an exploratory run down one of the "groomed" trails to see if it was ready to open, we had to close them for safety of the skiing public.

Ah born and raised in the poconos. I went to the local catholic school (also now closed) and for an after school program you’d go to alpine mountain from grades 4-8 (the last year McHugh had). I learned how to ski here and my instructor, I think his name was Pat, was fantastic. I was never a huge thrill seeker but there was just something about the terrain park that made me feel as if I was breaking out of my shell. The bumpy hill is still a no go though 🤣 I want to say I was there from age 11-14. I’m 25 now so back in 2009. My older sister also skied there and learned how to snowboard. Not sure if my younger sister ever skied on the slopes but they definitely got beaten out by camelback. Their black diamond slopes were beginner slopes at camelback.
