Lost Railways of East Anglia

Ойын-сауық

East Anglia was once rich in branch lines, providing a service to ports, villages and towns.
The Beeching Plan swept away many of these lines, leaving little sign that they had ever existed.

Fascinating, if tantalising clip! I remember looking at Melton Constable on the Ordnance Survey map. As the BR map showed it was the meeting point of 4 lines I was sure it must have been a major town, so I was very surprised to find that apart from the station there was almost nothing there at all!

Great to see pics of Melton Constable. I assumed from the railway map that it was the size of Crewe or Swindon, but it barely exists as a town. I do recall the M&GN in North Walsham; there used to be workings between the stations via Antingham Road Junction which was next to my Gt Grandmother's House.

Get it, it is well worth it, I live over here in Greece, and Father Christmas brought it to me (yes, it WAS him, and not my wife LOL). Excellent DVD, and if like me, you lived near one of the stations / lines, it is all the more poignant, reflecting on a lost, gentler time. I lived near and rode many times on that "fruit line" as we called it. Happy days!

Beecham was asked to find a way to make the very unprofitable railway run at profit, he only made suggestions, never was it he who closed lines down..

Jeff Owen At last someone who knows what they are talking about. The lines identified were duplicate lines dating from pre grouping days and unprofitable lines. Beeching also had nothing to do with getting rid of steam. That decision was made in the modernisation plans 5-6 years earlier. If the unprofitable lines were kept open, they would have replaced steam with diesel in due course..

Shame on Beeching....our countryside was ruined forever because of him and his policies...all those thousands of miles of track and thousands of stations, gone forever :(

mariaud999 Pull up the track , and rip the polluting steam locos apart with cutting torches. Recycle the metals in the furnaces.

In slight defence the real culprits were BR managers who ripped up lines so they couldn’t be replaced if there was an upturn in traffic (which there were). 50% of lines had 1% of traffic.
