Lost Odyssey | Review & Retrospective

Ойындар

Lost Odyssey is one of the Xbox 360's most beloved JRPGs... but in the grand scheme of things, that hasn't amounted to much. Trapped on a console that isn't known for it's selection of Japanese titles, its relevance in the world of RPGs has never exceeded the small number of devoted fans who sing it's praises. How did the concept for Lost Odyssey come about? How does it compare to contemporaries? Most importantly, does it truly stack up, or is the love for Lost Odyssey the product of rose-colored glasses? Please enjoy this review & retrospective where I attempt to answer these questions and many more.

Just seeing the words “Don’t forget me now, you hear?” made me choke up. I had a grandmother suffering from dementia at the time I played this game, and that story really hit home. It perfectly depicted how she seemed to have constructed an ideal world in her head in which she was a teenager again while everyone she had loved throughout her life was alive and well.

1:55:40 "To love is to lose, and to lose is agonizing. But grief, like life, is a journey from which new strength can be found and lessons can be learned." Maj...I lost my daughter (13) to suicide five months ago. I usually come to your channel as a means to mindlessly distract myself from my trauma and grief. This has to be one of the most difficult event possible to go through… This is definitely a game that would evoke very hard feelings after what you went through.. I’m very touched and saddened by what you had to go through and I truly hope for time to appease you wound. If there is one theme this game can transmit is that sadness and being hurt is linked to happiness and feelings of joy. Kaim tried forgoing the entire spectrum of emotions but in the end it is a better life to embrace good and bad even when we wish we could run away from the bad… I’m sorry for your loss and I find teenage suicide to be one of the worst near-epidemic problem of our time. Socially we need to realize that we need to do something because our youth are having an incredibly hard time in this weird “social media” world…

I remember playing this back at launch. This is one of many RPGs that deserve a remake. In regards to the 1000 Year of Dreams, even when I was younger I remember enjoying them. One of them I always remember whenever thinking about them. The story of the town festival, where Kaim is approached by a villager asking why he doesn't celebrate with them. He begins to explain how the festival they know today was originally started after a natural disaster from 200 years earlier and it was originally a memorial day. It's the sort of short story you could only experience in the eyes of an immortal being. How events can not only shape a culture, but change as the culture shifts.

Very nice to se you cover this gem of a game. If it were marketed as a Final Fantasy title, it would have gotten so much more attention and love at the cost of it's creative independence. The 1000 Years of Dreams is one of the biggest achievements in writing you could ever ask for in a video game, on top of the particular segments in Nier. To an extent, I wish we allowed VAs to adlib more with their characters. With English being the "official" release, it makes a character like Jensen stand out that much more because he's real. He's not written to be goofy or annoying, he just is. He isn't written to be lovestruck or to have his own less-than-pure goals, he just does. They trusted the talent and the talent trusted the story. The biggest crime in all of this is that it can't even be emulated that well. The only option you have is to play it on OG hardware with the discs. It may seem like a high barrier but given how expensive some games are and upgrading PC rigs can be... just spend $200 needed to be able to play it and bam, you can also go back and play through other older games too. Like Blue Dragon, even if it is a bit more of a game-ass game.

I had heard of Lost Odyssey, but never played it. This was an eye opening video and really want to get it for myself to read through all the Dreams. And spending two hours with you really helped me unwind and de-stress from my current goings-on, Majuular. So I do wish to thank you for that. Your commentaries always spark joy when they pop up in my feed. Don't stop what you're doing and you'll certainly attain the notoriety you deserve.

Wow, what a blast from the past. I remember playing this close to release despite the fact I was never really a fan of JRPGs, but came to love it. I guess I have it to thank for all the RPGs I ended up playing. Also: I watch a lot of videos from a lot of people but I have to say that you have become my absolute favourite out of all of them. Your videos are remarkably well made, completely engaging no matter how long they are and most importantly, comfy as hell. Puts a smile on my face whenever I see you've uploaded a new one. 24:46 Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception and Mask of Truth use a timing based attack system like this AND it also applies to magic. AND it has more than one kind of button press so it keeps things more interesting. Also hidden bonus combos you can get that arent telegraphed as obviously. And you can choose not to engage with it or redo attacks as many times as you want until you get it right so its super forgiving.

I hope this doesn’t come off the wrong way, but this video feels next level in your pacing and analysis, things flowed seamlessly from one section to another and your conclusion from 1:56:00 and on was beautiful. You do always do a really good job making your reviews immersive, but the sound mixing was extra phenomenal this go around, the whole section about the music starting and looping back around to Gongora’s theme was great. And I think it’s a testament that this video was as engaging and thrilling as your Skies of Arcadia video was, and still is, for me to watch since Skies is my second favorite RPG ever.
