Lost in Time: Exploring Whittingham Asylum - Preston

In 2014, a friend asked if i fancied having a walk around an old abandoned hospital in Preston.. its not something ive ever done, or belived in regards to the super natural! However, a couple of things were alittle hard to explain, and left me alittle baffled..in the video is some pictures and footage of our exploration.. Whittingham Hospital was a psychiatric hospital in the parish of Whittingham, near Preston, Lancashire, England. The hospital opened in 1873 as the Fourth Lancashire County Asylum and grew to be the largest mental hospital in Britain, and pioneered the use of electroencephalograms (EEGs). It closed in 1995. In 1866 the first three Lancashire lunatic asylums, at Prestwich, Rainhill and Lancaster, were deemed to be full. Extra accommodation was urgently needed and to this end the building of Whittingham Asylum "for pauper lunatics" began in 1869. The hospital was designed by Henry Littler of Manchester, Architect to the Lancashire Asylums Board and built of red brick made from clay dug on site. The buildings followed a plan of multiple quadrangles with inter-connecting corridors radiating from a long axial corridor section. North Lodge, the entrance to Guild Park, the grounds of the former Whittingham Hospital. The hospital was officially opened as the Fourth Lancashire County Lunatic Asylum on 1 April 1873, although 115 patients had already been admitted in the previous year, some of whom helped with the building work. The large complex (to be known as St. Luke's Division from 1958) was completed in June 1875; it had an initial capacity of 1100 inmates and included an Anglican church, a Catholic chapel, a recreation hall and a large farm estate. Before long it also had its own railway, telephone exchange, post office, reservoirs, gas works, brewery, orchestra, brass band, ballroom and butchers' shop.

Very interesting Jon. It is a shame nearly all of these have now gone and many are forced to get help otherwise. I would not have wanted to explore there alone 😮😬👍

Yes..it is a shame..I dont think the new system does alot of people justice..as they are left and lost in society with little or no support.. instead of the safety of these hospitals.. it was very spooky..and definitely an eye opener, joining a group of people who take it very seriously, exploring places like this!

I don't think it's a shame! Most of these places have gone because of the abuse that was going on in them. It's still going on in psych wards in hospitals. 😢

@@BritainsAbandonedRealms totally crazy..especially round the park! The buzz of the place is crazy! How good is the food.. I was always in them little side diners getting meat balls or amarrican breakfasts.. have you been into the toy shops? They have that key board you can dance on from the film Big, in the basement floor of Darcys.. glad the weather ok..I went once and it was snowing, and was the coldest place I've ever been.. ended up drinking warm drinks, instead of on the beer with the lads!😄

@relaxingwalks_uk that's so strange you say that I bumped into an old friend from Nelson and he mentioned that toy shop so we went down and had a look this morning, we been mainly going for pizza or the halal food trucks on the corners, got free breakfast at the hotel which is good. Central parks pretty good can't believe how huge it is.

I'd love to get an hour inside there. But I believe its all now fenced off and is the land around it used for some sort of police dog training or something to do with the local enforcement teams? It looks a superb place to go and explore.

I think it's been flattened, and covered with new houses! Wouldn't like to live in one of them! Yea, you would of loved it in there.. I believe it attracted people from all over the country! If you turn the volume up, and listen to the radio, you can here a voice..I can heard clear through my car speakers.. thatvwas just after we had a strange experience!
