Lost in Space | American Soundscapes | Cincinnati Pops Orchestra

The Cincinnati Pops is proud to present AMERICAN SOUNDSCAPES, a new video series featuring performances captured live by our friends and partners at CET Public Television. This fifth video explores the incredible music of John Williams with the Lost in Space theme, conducted by John Morris Russell.
Introduction by Cincinnati Pops Conductor John Morris Russell; "Lost in Space" performed by the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra in March 2016 at Cincinnati Music Hall.
The Pops is grateful to the George L. and Anne P. Heldman Fund of The Greater Cincinnati Foundation for its support of American Soundscapes. Special thanks to the Esquire Theatre.

@@williamjones4479 I didn't like it in the 1970s because it gave me headaches. I now realize that when I was 8, the 10 year old "Older kid" was simply turning up the volume on the television to painful proportions! I never hated Lost in Space, I always loved it, but it is a boon to watch it now, and realize I don't have to have the volume turned up to painful levels. At the same time, I'm 54 and my hearing is fading.... but it's not dead yet.

This is so freakin' great. I am so glad that I am not the only one who just adores these TV themes. The 2nd version of "Lost in Space" is by far, my favorite TV theme of all time.

There's something so bold about the intro to the second theme when the countdown appears on screen. It was a great, jarring transition from the cold open to the intro. It feels like four successive shots of adrenaline to pump you up for what's to come. The first one is classic and fits the initial tone of a show titled "Lost in Space." It was more peril and intrigue than high adventure. The second theme has a heroic flair, a bit of tongue-in-cheek that fits the shows transition to color. It also begins Williams's knack for nesting multiple themes into one. Star Wars, E.T., Raiders, Superman, and Harry Potter all had a variety of themes for the the same thing - not simply the use of leitmotif. I can't pick a favorite example, but the one that leaps out to me is Superman. In his main march there are two distinct and equally indelible and iconic themes. I've always wondered which one people would sing more if you randomly asked 100 people.

I enjoyed both of the themes, but the second one has ALWAYS been my favorite. and the fact that both the movie from 1998 and the Neflix series used bits of that version always makes me smile. Well done, great performance of both!!! BRAVO!!
