LOST HALF OF THE RUDDER!! saved my 777-9x RC airplane from crashing 😰

That was the training flight before the main event at the Airliner meeting 2019, I flew it twice after that and she preformed flawlessly.
Thanks to Essential RC for providing us with some awesome ground footage,

No, it was clearly a drone. When something bad happens to a plane, these always get to be blamed instantly, so why not this time? ;-) It seems that blaming drones is even done to cover up technical issues. I heard a report that Gatwick, which was supposedly "attacked" by drones for days, locking the airport, also has been dealing with failures of the traffic control systems, and it could just as well have been a problem during that supposed "attack". The airport was supposed to be sold and reports about technical problems could have made this deal fail, or reduce the final price. So it could just as well have been that the drones were brought up to justify locking the airport, while making repairs on the airport's systems, and those technical malfunctions not being revealed as the real cause. It's still strange that supposedly drones flew around the airport for days, yet not a single picture or video of this has been released. Which is hard to believe in a time where even toddlers have a smartphone with videocamera...

@@RamyRC No, it does not have to do with bad luck. It is about preparation and taking control beforehand. Consult some seasoned large-scale R/C pilots before, during and after flying these large R/C planes and you don't have to blame yourself anymore in case a mishap happens.

Also, stop asking him to build planes just like that. It takes a lot of his time and money to build one, so unless you're willing to pay all the expenses, let the man build at his own pace.

That was quite the scare...no, not the rudder, your landings and take offs. Dude, you do great engineering, your design work is top notch, but you are going to plant another big plane in the ground if you do not learn how to control the plane. The very first thing is you do not stabilize your approach to land. It looks like you are trying to fly into Kabul at the height of the conflict. You landed more than halfway down the runway and you had, from one aerial shot, a lot of room to extend downwind, make a controlled base and set up a stabilized final. I really thought you'd plant it on the first, but you got lucky. The same with take off. Every pilot knows, the runway behind is runway you cannot use and still you yank the plane up instead of letting it fly up on lift. I love that you are showing us how you build and by extension, your passion, but please, get a small RTF and show us videos of you playing around with that. Challenge yourself to be smoother and lastly, you are flying a recreation of a passenger jet....do you really want to fly it like it is a F18. I look forward to future videos and I pray one is not you planting that 777 in the ground. (from a PPL and one RC pilot to another)

Flew with a guy years ago. He had a good 1/8th inch gap between the strip ailerons and the wing. He'd make a flyby just to listen to the hum as the aileron fluttered. I told him that he needed to fix the gap, seal it, something, or his wing would blow apart. He insisted the wing wasn't in any harm. Then one day, he dove for the runway, full throttle, got the hum, then the wing disappeared, just little parts coming down, the rest of the plane didn't do much better I don't know if he learned his lessons on flutter, very destructive forces. A little slop can destroy a model, no matter what you think or believe.

Flutter is ultimately caused by a coupling between bending and torsion modes. The system can be decoupled by correct weight distribution, then regardless of a pushrod failing you wouldn’t have the problem. Control surfaces should be mass balanced about the hinge line, and flying surfaces too. Great work, keep it up!

I witnessed a modeler who loved hearing the flutter of his ailerons, huge gap in hinges. Eventually it went away...in the air, when the wing exploded from the forces.

Good thing you didn't lose the vertical stabilizer. Do you have individual engine control?

One lucky plane! If the tail breaks off, the place will just tear it apart. I saw one RC video where the tail breaks off and it didn't just plunge to the ground but it breaks entirely on mid flight just because of rudder stress.

Am glad this worked our very well, given all that flutter. I wonder, and I'm just a watcher not a model maker or pilot, but could those rough and very bumpy grass runways be potential contributors to many kinds of mechanical failure modes?

I wonder if it's possible to install a minicamera inside the model, in the cockpit or somewhere close to the wings/engines. That way we'd have a pilot's or a passenger's view of the flight.

If you didn’t land sooner or later the whole vertical stabilizer would’ve came off like JAL123. Here are some tips. If that happens again but it comes off fully follow these steps: use the throttles to control the plane that manipulated the engines to go left or right but with an angle first then pull up so it can go left or right. But if there is strong wind then use the flaps on max then use the throttles. Let’s say you’re inverted and you cannot recover, lower the speed and after that try to recover do everything you can do to recover from stalling or inverting. If you cannot recover, than hope for the best and lower the speed or to no speed. Chances are that there will be minor damages inverted but low speed.
