    It took me several watches of Lost to realize the significance of the iconic "Make Your Own Kind of Music" song in Desmond's introduction. Desmond plays the song because he desperately wants control over his destiny but has to learn over the course of the show that he is not.

    I would love this to happen but I have no faith in today’s quality. Streaming services/tv channels are churning out new shows constantly and then cancelling them after a season or two, just hoping one will “catch” and be a success. They’ve given up on what makes shows good and are only looking for profit. Call me cynical, but I’d worry that they’d release “LOST 2.0” with no interest in making it good, but only to cash in on its name. It’s what’s happening with Star Wars; there’s constantly a new Star Wars show being released but none of them are fantastic, but mere luke warm cash ins that are shadows of its former greatness. And the people that missed out on the good shows of old, that don’t watch them because they are old, don’t realise how bad a lot of modern shows are. I had no intention of writing so much when I started this 😂 so sorry about that 😅

    Whilst I agree, I would say that if you need to watch 6 x 2h+ videos in order to understand a 6-season show, it's not exactly excellent writing. I don't want things to be overly-simplistic, but at the same time, when things are purposefully obtuse to be "complex" then something has gone wrong in the process.

  • @LOSTEXPLAINED108

    @LOSTEXPLAINED108

    @@deandejaguar With respect, I totally disagree with your assessment here. There are people who make 30-minute videos deconstructing the plots of Christopher Nolan movies and his movies only tend to run for two to three hours. LOST was *100 hours* of story. You cannot begin to deconstruct it all in one video, that's simply neither fair nor realistic. And the show had a lot of narrative convolutions as a result of having to stretch out the storytelling for the first three years because they had no end date, so that adds to the complexities of an analysis. It's not a case of the writing being good or bad, just beholden to the time in which the show was made and how it was made. I actually resent the implication that simply because I make long analysis videos exploring the nooks and crannies of a long-running 120+ episode narrative with a huge mythology that it is somehow evidence, in and of itself, of the show being bad or incomprehensible. Would anyone expect one or two videos to be sufficient enough to explain the complex worlds and storylines of long running book series like The Dark Tower, or Game of Thrones, or Discworld? The answer is no, you wouldn’t expect that. Star Wars and Star Trek get in-depth video series exploring every aspect of their universes on the regular, getting into the deep lore of each universe. Are those video essays proof that those narratives were poorly written or too purposefully convoluted? No, they are not. Yet both LOST and the fanbase's work in analysing the story is held to this bizarre higher standard. If you can’t explain LOST in one or two shorter videos then it is somehow evidence that it is disastrous mess that does not add up. I think that is a totally unfair metric to use on this channel or the show.

    @LOSTEXPLAINED108 I'm speaking for the vast majority of people who watched the show and went "wtf" at the end - there are better ways to get your points across to a broad audience than the way that Lost presented itself to the public. I love the series but even I was dumbfounded by the final season, and having to go online to have someone explain time-travel theories, physics and meta-physics, and spirituality before you can even begin to understand what the show is about is bad storytelling on the part of the creators. Now, might be that so much content was cut for time is the reason that this is the case, but either way if you write too far for most people to get what you are trying to convey, then it is your fault, not the viewer. My gripe is not with your videos but the shows writing, pacing and explanations (or lack thereof)

  • @LOSTEXPLAINED108

    @LOSTEXPLAINED108

    4 ай бұрын

    @@deandejaguar You can only speak for yourself and not the vast majority, unless you can back it up with evidence beyond your own disappointment and prior echo chamber interactions. I can prove you wrong by pointing out some hard data. We have aggregate sites that tell us exactly how critics and audiences felt about LOST both in terms of its finale and the overall experience (IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, MetaCritic), and the aggregate ratings are high. Compare those same aggregates to those who hated the Game of Thrones series finale. It's night and day. Furthermore, a recent statistical analysis was carried out to actually get to the bottom of which series finales were considered good and bad, and LOST turned out to be one of the good ones, much to the surprise of people who share your view. Here's the link to the study: www.statsignificant.com/p/which-shows-got-their-finale-right Was the final season and finale divisive? Yes, it was. I'm not saying you are alone in your criticisms. There are plenty of comments and articles bemoaning how things wrapped up (but also plenty of comments and articles praising it). I'm just saying that is not "the vast majority" and that you really need to get out of this mindset: "Because I think it and saw people who agreed with me, then therefore everyone thinks and agrees with me." It's a Mandela Effect thing. If you do decide to take up that mission of seeking out the objective general reaction to LOST then do your due diligence and research a bit further. It won't take long! As for needing to have the whole series explained to you... not everyone does. Some people only need certain pieces of the mythology clarified and some just enjoy deep dives into a show that they loved to see where they agree and disagree with the interpretations, while others like to re-experience the show via video essay analysis and pick up on details they might have missed. It's a broad church of fans and casual viewers on here. I have found from my time doing this that many who come here needing the entire show explained in detail probably only watched it once. A lot of the data/answers come from re-watching the show. Like re-reading a really complex sci-fi novel to fully grasp it, or watching a Chris Nolan movie more than once. You don't have to rewatch it to get the gist of it, of course. Some people understood enough first time and moved on. But, I think, to really appreciate the levels LOST was operating on, watching it more than once is a net benefit to the experience. Understanding things like the time travel and metaphysics are for the hardcore geeky viewers, not the casual audience. All the casual viewer needs to know about time travel by the end is that the past was not changeable: whatever happened, happened. You don't need to know about the ins and outs of compatibilism or determinism to enjoy it lol. And not everyone needed to understand every aspect of how the metaphysics worked. Because some viewers only cared about whether or not Kate and Jack would end up together, and were invested in the character relationships and love stories, while others just wanted to see the action and enjoy the crazy twists. Like I said, LOST audiences are a broad church, and many were in it for different things. Videos like mine cater more towards those into the hardcore geeky details. LOST was ahead of its time, as were the writers. They created the modern TV show as we know them today. They absolutely encouraged rewatches from season to season, and that expectation was no different by the time it ended. It wanted us to keep talking and rewatching. It was Dark before Dark existed on Netflix, which you could also complain about being too complex to follow or fully understand in one sitting. But so what? Does every story need to be easily digestible in one sitting then never thought about again? There are plenty of shows for that - thousands in fact. LOST, from the start, told us it was going to be challenging and ambitious and crazy and make us ask questions. And we had to keep up with it or tune out. And those that couldn't get on with it, did tune out. But those of us who stuck to the end still talk about it today, whereas those thousands of other shows that were easily digestible have faded into obscurity. No one cares about shows like Desperate Housewives anymore. What LOST gave us was not bad storytelling. It was pioneering what TV would become.

    @@LOSTEXPLAINED108 Hard evidence? Really? The fact the ending is still being parodied and taken the piss out of (the big one that stands out is the Joker in Arkham City) shows that the vast majority of people DID NOT get the ending to Lost at all. Taking "aggregate" scores from the Internet and then trying to use the review-bombing of GoT isn't hard evidence either. Critics and viewers change their minds wildly over time, and yet people still to this day do not understand the ending - not just weren't happy with the way things happened or it was ambiguous - it was batshit! The fact that you have had to write 6 paragraphs and made 12h of extra content to and explain it proves my point. Again, I love the show and I am enjoying your videos to help me understand it better but as I said - if you have to do much homework to understand something, maybe the writers didn't get the best results from the ideas they had down to translate it onto the script.

    Of all the ironies based on the time travel causal loops, I like the irony of Ben becoming "evil" as a child, or losing his innocence being a direct result of Jack refusing to save him. Which leads to so much of his own and many others' suffering in the future. But in particular it's the cause for the deepest betrayal by Kate in his eyes, her having sex with Sawyer, then her begging Jack to save Ben's life to save Sawyer. That betrayal gutted him.

    Lol. This is identical to me. Came up on my feed, been considering a rewatch for a couple of months, and thought why not. And can honestly admit (gonna blame general consensus around the time), that despite watching the series probably 8-10 times and being above average intelligence lol, I always thought they were in purgatory for the whole thing (whatever the 2nd or 3rd video on here I watched did shame me lmao). But even with those 15 odd years of stupidity I'd gotten over the(imagined) disappointment of the last episode, and survived on love of the whole. This channel has rekindled my initial infatuation with the program (downloading - oops, lol, I could watch it the next day legally but didn't want it wait - 1am uk time). It's taken away the black mark of the last episode, at the very least, as well as connecting a few other dots. But I'll always be grateful for taking away purgatory.

    @@iancooper7772 I come at the show from another angle, from the world of comic books. What the show does is insert goofy comic book science and mysticism into a dramatic setting, and then take it super seriously. That's a rather unique blend. I was iffy on the show during the initial run, maybe about to drop it, then the time travel hit and I was back in to the end. I got the ending the first time around in a general sense, but I never tracked down all the mechanics. I don't rewatch the show much, but I remember everything enough on a pass through like this. I relate to this project because it's the sort of thing I would have done in my youth, filling notebooks with evidence and theories for a completely fictional world, for no one's benefit other than myself. Something I've always found interesting is that often the things that the Island instructs players to do are also held in disregard by the Island itself. The Island guided the Man in Black to construct the donkey wheel, yet it is still considered a grand offense to turn the donkey wheel and move the island. The Island isn't against directly contradicting itself, which is super intriguing & intimidating to me. Another example would be Jack getting sick in season 4 while trying to get everyone off the island. Obviously everything happens to play into the weaving of the tapestry, but that's just it - Jack was playing the role he needed to play, yet he was still punished by the Island for it. The logic seems to be even though the events you face are predetermined, you're still held accountable for how you choose to act in those events - the determined outcome doesn't matter, the consequences of good or bad actions are still felt. Eerie yet amazing.

    When Ben shoots Locke in Season Three, the bullet passes right through him. Locke later explains that he'd probably be dead if he "still had a kidney there." I think a similar argument could be made for Jack's whole appendix episode in Season Four. At the time, it does seem like the island is causing Jack to get sick, to either prevent him from getting everybody rescued or otherwise "punish" him for it. But in the end, it could be argued that having his appendix removed allows him to survive being stabbed by the Man in Black long enough to satisfy his ultimate destiny. Y'know... to unplug it and plug it back in.

    Amazing video from you as always. The Desmond scene in Catch 22 perfectly makes sense in context of the whole story, man it’s so satisfying. There’s a great observation from Seanie B’s Final Recap, maybe you’ve seen, where he points out how there are incredible similarities between the epiphany Desmond has there to what eventually is the culmination of his arc in the Series Finale wherein he “looks up to see a man with a rope tied around his waist” who comes to “help” him. It’s a perfect parallel to Jack coming down into the cave, lowered by the rope tied round his waist, to help Desmond out before Jack goes on to cork the source and restart the light. It’s like Desmond has a vision of his ultimate eventual fate in saving the island and the world at the same time as seeing the monk in front of him. There’s a part of his time travelling consciousness that recognises this vision of “a man with a rope tied around his waist” and knows he has some connection to it. It in the end turns out to be Jack but in that moment he has no idea, all he just has is a feeling… I have so many other things to add in response to this great video but just wanted to start with that. Incredible work!

    After finding your channel and pulling out my Lost DVDs 📀, I think the Others killed Dharma Initiative is because they were messing with time travel and kept moving the island 🏝️ which harmed it. As mother told her sons man would always want more of the light. Maybe when Dharma moved the island with the polar bear was the last straw. With the incident which caused Dharma to build the hatch which almost destroyed the island…testing the wheel theory with polar bear was the last straw since they didn’t learn their lesson and would keep pushing the limits with the island 🏝️. Doing that test broke a key rule with their truce with the Others. I think this is similar to when mother killed the MiB’s people when he tried to build a wheel 🛞 to control the light and move the island. I think his mom should have explained why they should not move the island since it damages the island vs just killing everyone. Just another theory 🤔

    I'm not going to lie, after watching several of your videos, you are doing something that anyone that knows me would have thought impossible: you're making me rethink my opinion of Lost. I honestly stopped watching TV shows completely (except for GoT for a specific exception) *only* because of Lost and my disdain for the show and how it ended. And I have not been shy in expressing that disdain to those around me. So I want to praise you for how great your content has been and how thorough all your explanations have been. That is honestly the best possible feedback I could get. My primary goal with this channel has been to deepen and/or enrich the mythology of the show for fans, but I also very much hope to convert former fans who felt betrayed or let down by the eventual direction the show took. Honestly, it's comments like this that are the ultimate validation and keep me motivated. I'm really grateful that the videos have either clarified or improved the narrative of the show for you. That's about as much as I could hope for! Thank you for letting me know 🙏 p.s. I absolutely think you should do a rewatch of the show because now you are armed with more information about the mythology. It might help you to see it all in a new light, if you'll pardon the pun!

I am especially glad you didn't posit anything that would nullify my theory that Pierre Chang was off-Island or in a safe part of the Island during the purge. I like to think that Pierre and Miles got to have an adult relationship in the mundane world after the events in the series ended. They both deserved it, as they both sacrificed so much and served the Island so well. (Of course, the same could be said for many characters who died in that service.) I watched and rewatched and analized Lost every off season, and I couldn't get enough, almost 20 years ago. But you are on another league. Not only your attention to detail is overwhelming. The editing, the order, the links to other videos... The result is not only great, it's also beautiful. Lost maybe started the trend of making "explained" videos, and you went back to "the source" and made a Master Class on how to do it. Did you happen to catch the "lost untangled" Videos? They aired after each episode since season 5, and tried to give us some clues mixed with humor. I was then so hungry for Lost things that I hunted for videos like this one (kzread.info/dash/bejne/onuZo7WRmseWhbg.html) Thanks a lot for your work. I think faradays last name is interesting bc it’s sort of a loop like the compass. It’s obviously not Eloise’s maiden name so she just chose that name. But the reason she chose it was bc she already knew that was her son’s name! He was named after himself in the future

    That is a great catch! I never actually considered it before but that absolutely could be another time loop paradox. I don't think Faraday ever officially introduces himself to Eloise in 1954 or 1977 by full name, but the journal might have his full name written inside of it or Jack/Kate might have told Eloise his full name off-screen after his death. Either way, I love this idea and it explains why there is a disconnect between surnames. Excellent comment, love your thinking!

    Don't forget that we see him change again in that very same episode 'Dead is Dead'. He goes from being Fake Locke to Fake Alex within the space of one sequence, so he was still shifting and changing into other forms during the latter half of Season Five. I think the Island intuition thing guides MiB a lot, but I don't think it's a full information download in which he acquires a whole narrative's worth of exposition. It's a feeling of what to do or where to go. Whereas in the wheel chamber, as Fake Christian, he has incredibly specific information about someone who has been off-island for decades. It's the major clue as to when in the timeline that scene is taking place.
