According to the showrunners, Widmore was responsible for both mass murders not Ben. Widmore gave the orders for the Dhrama purge (they deserved it having invaded the island and then violated the treaty with the natives) and then the Ajira passengers that were killed. Ben killed his father on his birthday. It was probably a test Widmore conceived of. Jacob had picked Ben as next leader and Widmore was jealous.

Ben did not kill the DI. Widmore did. Widmore was the leader then not Ben. As for Alex if Ben had handed himself over to Keamy -Keamy still would have killed Alex. Remember he told the Capt of the Kahana he was going to torch the island. The only person Widmore couldn't kill was Ben so once he was in custody the rest were going up in smoke. The thing I like about LOST is that the miraculous events that take place can be explained as either religious or scientific depending on how you look at it. You could say that this alternate world is either a "purgatory" type of place where souls are sent after death before crossing over, or simply just that their consciousnesses existing in another plane of reality where they experience a shared dream that is so vivid it seems real. I'm going with the scientific view on it.
