This and the previous episode show that Ben isn't the absolute monster everyone seems to think he is, and that other people are partially responsible for how he turned out - and not just his father and the abuse he suffered at the hands of his father. Ben did show compassion when he DIDN'T kill Danielle after seeing she was a mother, and RESCUED the baby from the CRAZY, LUNATIC of a mother; then refused to kill the baby when ordered; lastly, when he saw Penny's son, he lowered his gun because he had a change of heart, deciding not to kill Penny. Sayid is the mostly responsible, then Kate and Sawyer for taking him to the Others to be saved... which required the use of the Island's version of a Lazarus Pit.

The reason Danielle didn't recognize Ben years later in the show's present is because is because it was dark. But even if she saw him just slightly, she was crazy. I'd say it's difficult to recognize someone you only saw one time for less than a minute in your tent while it's dark out, 16 years ago.

Caesar was originally going to be a series regular, even having a big part in the final season, but due to the actor’s scheduling conflicts he asked to be written out of the show which has always been a big shame.
