Lose Boot weight! Lightweight boot options - Lowa, Salomon, Asolo, Vasque
Cutting weight is something we're all after, and boots can be one of the best places to do it. You can get the same comfort and support as a heavier full leather boot if you go with some of the newer synthetic boots. I found all of the highest rated light weight boots I could round up and found out which ones I liked the best.

Excellent work on this video. I and countless others appreciate your work. One item I wish you would consider for future updates on boots is: you sock combination and the width fit of any particular boot - wide or narrow. Again, thanks for your effort. Peace.
On behalf of the internet, I thank you for your great video dude.
thanks for proving that the Internet is still useful...good job with this, very helpful :)
Man what a great video, the information is outstanding plus you are speaking from experience which to my opinion is priceless. Great job mate, we can tell you kind of like hiking shoes and boots...lol so do I. I also own a couple, Keen, Asolo, Danner, Diemme, Salomon Quest 4D GTX, Vasque, Oboz, Merrell.
One of the Better reviews I Ave watched....well done.
Thank you for such a detailed breakdown, very helpful!
This video is almost 2 years old. The newer Salomon Quest 4D GTX 2 are 2.6 pounds. A new update video of current models would be awesome. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Was looking for a very light weight boot option for hiking. Thank you much! Very helpful.
I got those Neutrons on sale a while back and I love them. Not super stiff but well made and versatile. I use them for simple day hikes as well as with gaiters on snowy slopes on more technical terrain.
Very useful comparison. Thanks.
Finally found the type of reviews I've been looking for..thank you so much..
The Vasque St. Elias GTX are, in my opinion, some of the best boots ever made.
The Zamberlan is the vioz plus model and this particular one has the vibram darwin sole and not the 3D. The newer version I think it has the vibram star trek.
Very , very informative video. Great job. What is your opinion of Keen boots?
Very thorough boot review thx for putting the prices too.
Excellent work on this review. How about doing a similar update video since some of the boots in this video are out of date and no longer available. Also, FYI, the Vasque Breeze boots are a fantastic summer boot for places like NM, UT and any of the low elevation locations east of the Mississippi such as: the Smokies, Appalachian trail, Adirondack State Park. Great soles on the Breezes.

On the brown pair of LOWA boots, which you we're talking about the cross trade on the tip of the toe tread, and I just wanted to say that you could cut cross sections into the tread yourself. Just a suggestion.
Thanks for taking the time to make the video. There are several boots in your video that I am considering. Thus me finding your video was mighty helpful. Thank you. Your video is about a year old. Do you have any more thoughts on the Neutrons or the Salomon 4D?

+Craig Houdeshell My personal preference is the Salomon. The 4D has been terrific. That said, the neutron is less money and a great value.
Hi. Great video. Do you have any experience with Wolverine boots? Cheers Dan
What shoe/boot would you recommend for hikes around 12-15 mile round trip with 2700-3500 feet in elevation gain?
I have a Solomon trail running shoe, after 11 years is now starting to break/disintegrate all the rubber sole. :)

It’s a biodegradable material in the soles. I have two pairs of aku boots with those soles had to have new ones put on like new again.
I know your vid is 5 years old, but I wanted to comment and tell you my boots. Salawa are Very nice boots and my Asolo fugitive, and my wild card that surprised me was the Adidas Fast-X GTX they are comfortable, no break-in needed and great heal grabbers, I really love them when I need a light waterproof hiker and also my danner 600 they are SOOOOO comfortable. thanks for the video! happy trails!

I used a few boots from and then I tried Salomon and I think it was right fit for my feet, and I use Salomon only just because of the fit. I hate anything Vibram because I had few bad experience on my previous 3 boots with Vibram.
Great review! Especially on the Tech-Light. I was going for the Solomon, but I think that the Lowa will be more durable for me. It looks like they'll last.
I wore Asolo exclusively for a very long time. However, I have noticed over the past several pairs that the quality has been lacking. The proof is in how they wear. I purchased a pair of Fugitive GTX back in Sept. 2015 that replaced another pair, which was it's 'model replacement' that I purchased back in 2011. Now ... the Asolo boots I purchased in 2011 was at the $250 range and it lasted me 4 years, and was made in Italy. I went to repurchase that model in Sept. 2015, but they had discontinued that item and replaced it with their Fugitive GTX (Made in Romania) . I purchased the Fugitive GTX and they only lasted me around 16 months, as opposed to the previous model that lasted me 4 years! Go figure! I'll not go back to Asolo, and am now going to Salomon through a recommendation a friend in the Marine Corps gave me. So ... long story short ... Asolo's quality of materials have gone down hill over the past 4 years, and the price has not changed. Look elsewhere before buying Asolo.

roostershooter76 Asolo had some QC issues. For a while Bought two pairs of Fugitives. One from Zappos the other from REI. The Zappos were just awful. The fit was poor and the souls wore out in about 6 months. My REI ones feel fine and the trends are still going good after a year. There are videos of people documenting the delamination of their souls.

thinking about the lowa tiago's gtx at 2lbs 2ounces for the pair.
I'm looking for great grip on cold wet mossy granite around Mt. Washington NH USA. I also pay attention to motorcycle tires and grip is everything for many of us, we don't want the longest life, we don't get fooled by tread patterns or side wall lettering, we realize that 10 year old rubber grip is going south, we realize that the rubber recipe has the biggest effect, not often the "look of the lugs." Slicks for tracks are the top of the grip heap and it's all about rubber compound that hiking boot people don't talk about( yet?). Rock climbing shoes do get into rubber compound information.
And what do you think about XPETI Hiking Boots? I just bought a pair of them, which are the Therminator mid high waterproof boots. I have seen nothing but good comments about them, so I just bought a new pair off of Amazon for $72, which is cheap considering the prices of a lot of the other brands, like ASOLO, KEEN, Solomon, The North Face, Columbia, SCARPA and many others.
How does the Clarks Outride Hi GTX boots compare?
How about the Scarpa Men's Kinesis Pro GTX Hiking Boots?
You could probably cut some extra patterns into the front part of that lowa techlight hunter.
I wish it was possible to find a decent mid without a Goretex membrane., offering a ankle support and suitable for trekking in drier climates.
Thank you for info
Any thoughts on the vasque st elais
For heavies you might also consider Hanwag Alaska gtx. Similar to Lowa Tibet and made in Germany. Sundowners are just awful now that they are made in China.

Hi I purchased salomon boots and they were so comfortable but I only run them in and they have separated from top and bottom at sole I haven’t even worn them for the off road track yet now they are unwearable what can I do, it’s like the rubber sole is falling apart , really brittle, do you have any advice for me as I was away when I purchased them, so unable to go back to shop , cannot remember where it was, so I’m stuck? I would like them either fixed or replaced if possible

Lowa is a. German brand, owned by an italian company (Tecnica group). They produces in Germany, Slovakia, *Italy* Bosnia and so on. So *those* boots were made in Italy.
Yeah, and you can also have the soles come off before a year is up, if the soles are just glued on, instead of double stitched! Saving weight in the wrong place might leave you barefoot in the wrong place!
Hitec v-light.cant beat them.

+Ernesto M. Reyes Ernesto, non-goretex boots breathe much better than goretex versions. Many guys think that if you treat them regularly they are just as waterproof. I prefer goretex boots.
The second boot is the Zamberlan Guide, not the Vioz.
Hey!! I'm wondering buy my first pair of Asolo and it might be the neutron model... The problem is that i've noted many Asolo pealing off in the soles... And that is a big concern for any serious trekker like me ... Need some guidance here ;)) Thanks

The lowa techlight hunter or the alternative name received VERY bad reviews for its lack of waterproofness leaking... I liked the look of those but the stats made them a no no.... I would like a lighter boot also, I have a meindl vakuum boot they are BRILLIANT and I'd like a boot just as good but lighter... I don't want to buy any more salamon they are too soft undersole and not comfortable robust enough when you hit rocky scree etc and they don't hold shape at the top.. I'd like a fabric version of those lowa or of my meindl vakuum?
At the end, which of the new boot did you decide to keep?

Very nice review. If you wanna try something new i would suggest you some other well renewed italian brands like Aku, La Sportiva, Garmont, Fitwell (a little producer). They produce some models (high-end models, usually) in Italy and medium and low range in Romania and Asia (trail running shoes).

@@greekveteran2715 Hi. "The best" brand does not exist: there is the best shoe for your feet, the challenge is to find it! Aku is definitely a very good brand, like other Italian brands (La Sportiva, Scarpa, Zamberlan, Garmont, Fitwell and others) and non-Italian brands (I remember mainly Meindl and Lowa, but I don't know the American manufacturers). I have tried several models of the Aku line in their factory store and I own a pair of selvatica low and a pair of tengu low. I have not tried any model of the tactical line, but maybe you might like the Griffon combat, which looks like a winter version of Pilgrim. But I repeat: I have not tried and have no direct knowledge of that model. The best way to choose a shoe, even more a mountain shoe, is to try it in a physical store with the assistance of experienced staff. If I were you, I would visit some stores in your area and calmly evaluate the available models. However, on the Aku website, as for any other brand, you can find the list of retailers (which will certainly not have all the models). If you really want to buy online, you could first ask for advice from the manufacturers' customer service, explaining your needs.

For differences notice the foundations are slightly different on the original versus the 2 version. Notice how there's more of a plastic platform base on the original 4D. It's hard to notice but if you compare them in different videos you'll quickly observe the difference in appearance. Also the symbol stamp at the toe of the original 4D is different. The sole and inner's appear to be identical. Yes, absolutely no complaints of quality issues in either pair. I'll gladly purchase another pair when one of these pair become worn. It's the first shoe I've been able to experience complete confidence ascending or descending steeper inclines or declines. It's as if the sole possess mountaineer climbing spikes, and yet I know they don't. These shoes grip! Neat trick by Salomon in one very affordable shoe.

I prefer the look of the original. But the support and feel of the 4D 2 is virtually the same. Besides a couple cosmetic differences I find them to be the same shoe. I only own 2 pair of the Quest 4D's because I got both at exceptional buys from personal sellers on ebay. Same for a pair of Lowe Renegades, which in my experience, for a lightweight hiking shoe aren't in the same league as the Quests.

Tyler Serafin it’s not a myth but it’s misunderstood. Ankle stability and support comes from the sole. Not the shanks and high support beyond the heel/Achilles.
IDK man im burning thru boots lately they only last me a couple of months typical failure is delamination, blown out seams doesnt matter the maker several of the ones you just showed I was talking to a cobbler he told me its the adhesive they use something about causing cancer to the workers which I get. Im rocking some hand stitched Jim Green boots "Vellies" there not heavy duty boots but they make some, but years ago when I worked in Africa thats what I wore and they lasted for ever...

james s. Alot of guys are using the Salomons, Oboz, and Lowas, too. In fact, the U.S. Army Rangers are now issued the Salomon Quest, from what I read on an SOF site. The Merrell Sawtooth was popular with alot of guys, too, but it's been discontinued. The Salomon XA Mid is popular with alot of mil. contractors & mil. guys, too. The 2018 XA Mid design has been changed, some, from the 2016 model, but I don't know the particulars. I can say, however, the pair of Salomon XA Mid GTX boots in Ranger Green I just bought were made in Vietnam, which is disappointing, however, my pair of Quest 4D GTX were made by the ChiComs, which really gripes the hell out of me.
Return the Renegades for sure. The TPU sole disintegrates very quickly, and it is NOT resoleable.

I was in a store trying out all the boots they had. Scarpa, La Sportiva, Salomon... all of them. No boot fit my feet and no boot felt neither comfortable, nor at least ok for a simple walk. Before I leave the store, I tried one last pair of boots, that I had never heard of that brand before. Suprisingly, it was by far the best boot in that store. It felt 3 times better than the best I had tried. It was an ASOLO.

And always get a half size bigger . Or try them on at the end or the day . That’s when your feet are most swallowing from a long day of work .
Not a good boot for heavy packing and rugged terrain. Go with their Tibets
On behalf of the internet would be nice if you give international universal measurements rather than your local so that we all know what are they. Cheers.
Note: Not really accurate to quote weight as say "three point four pounds" IF the boot ACTUALLY weighs 3 lbs and 4 OUNCES because obviously point four POUNDS is way more than 4 ounces ...no? 16 ounces to a pound So IF one wanted to quote decimal weight 3llbs 4 ounces would be like 3.25 llbs NOT "3.4" Kind of calls into question a lot of comparisons as you mixed up the two things like maybe you never considered? Just saying it is a big deal if people are spending big bucks and the weignt difference is key ...misinformation could well cause someone to choose in error trusting you?
