San Juan Atitán, in the department of Huehuetenango (Guatemala) preserves cultural features inherited from the Mayan and colonial times. One of the manifestations of the heritage revolves around a particular form of local authority, which coexists and supports the municipal goverment, in order to maintain public order and preserve natural resources.
