@@MTC008 Good catch! That does appear to be an updated version of the 3rd generation Caprice. I know there was an update for the 80-85 model years, and another update for the 86-90 model years, but since I can't see the headlamps, I can't tell which model it is.

  • @662wc5

Your perception doesn't match reality. LA was in the midst of the PCP epidemic in the early '80s with drive-by shootings and turfs wars between street gangs like the Crips and Bloods. I know it's just a movie, but watch the movie "Colors" from the mid '80s for a taste of what was going on in LA at that time. The violent crime rate was double in the '80s what it is now and "Illegals" were every bit the problem back then that they are now.. As for "livability" of LA in the early '80s, smog was so much worse than now, and gasoline prices and interest rates for cars and homes were through the roof with the prime rate pushing 20%. Yeah, there were fewer cars and people in SoCal back then, but there were also fewer freeways and the ones that were there had fewer lanes, no diamond lanes, etc. I lived there then and now and there are things I miss about the '80s, but also things I don't miss. Both then and now have pros and cons.

Some days were better than others. Even though life is easier now people still think it’s difficult today. Those cars you see broke down constantly. There was not much comfort for the little guy with no pc’s, no cell phones, no vcrs or dvds, no laptops, cars that really underperformed compared to today, no cable tv (just a few channels).

@@redtra236 Yeah, seat belt use was almost nonexistent. I was that rare teenager back then that wore both the lap and shoulder belts when I drove. Aside from the obvious safety aspect of buckling up, the car actually drove and handled better with the belts buckled. It was my grandfather's hand me down 1970 Buick Electra. One night a couple of years later the belts along with the size and quality of the Electra saved me in a head on collision with a drunk driver in a Chevrolet suburban. The general driving population was just too dumb and lazy to buckle up. My Electra had separate lap and shoulder belts with two separate buckles to fasten which most thought was a terrible inconvenience. I always got in the car, pushed in the cigarette lighter, buckled up both belts, lit a cigarette and then drove off. Two habits that continue to this day.

Cars of the 70's were so much better looking than the rolling "suppositories" of today! 🤣😂🤣 I remember Giorgio's in Beverly Hills... went there once while in college on the 80's, with a couple of friends. The girl tried on $2,000.00 cocktail dresses for fun, while my other friend and I had glass of wine while browsing cashmere sweaters, and checking out the pool table! 🥂🎱 We managed to see Larry Gatlin of the "Gatlin Brothers" leaving with a suit from Jerry Magnin, and Richard Simmons walking on the sidewalk. 😎 Oh, the good old days in LA, before it went to shit! 😝

Interesting video, but it's not just from the 70s. As noted below, some footage is from the 60s. Also, the Chevy police car at 3:20 is an early 1980's model, and also a K car (1980s) from the same clip.

That's what I'm saying! That particular generation of the Chevy Caprice didn't become more widespread until the 1980s. That clip from 2:57 to 3:27 seems to be from the latter half of the early 1980s (as in 1982 or especially 1983) to the mid-1980s. Hell, maybe it's even from the late 80s, but I'm unsure. It certainly isn't the 70s, that's for sure.

It's kind of amazing how much things changed back then in terms of clothing, cars, etc. Like in this video from the late '70s, those characteristics are radically different than say just 10 years later in the late '80s, which was radically different than another 10 years later in the late '90s. But if you look at the way things are evolving now, I would argue that fashion, cars, and other elements of design that are typically products of their time are far less different than 10 or even 15 years ago as they used to be. Does that make sense?
