Gotta hand it to these guys, they're great. LA County is blessed we three great (and large) fire departments: LA County, LA City, and Angeles National Forest with about 25 Engines, 5 Hotshot crews, and 27 patrol units. I am proud to have served several years on one of the shot crews.

I've been to sta 27 when I was in LA. The guys were really nice and gave us a full tour of the station and the museum. Also got to get on old boat 2. It was about a year before they retired it. They got a great group of ff's there.

I am a volunteer firefighter and a fulltime cowboy.

@LAFD027 Here in Michigan the Blackman-Leoni Township Public Safety Department has it set up where the police officers are also firefighters.

@SpringCube Its in a Canadian county. Full time LEO and Paid on call Firefighter! Despite what anyone says about no life, i say bogus! Social life is great and the sex life is even better! Its just a great way to give back! Different crests, one common goal!

@SpringCube It is possible to be a full time law enforcement officer and a part time firefighter, but not in the City of Los Angeles. Some cities in Northern California use this exact combination of expertise.

@twentyonekay Absolutely - but the typical employment is full time police and part time fire. Northern California has several cities that follow this protocol. Fire Captains and apparatus operators are full time, but firefighters are also police officers.

I love the look of the traditional helmet. But damn, mine is heavy, and I'm beginning to think I would prefer one of those LA style dome protectors. I'm guessing they're much lighter.

Train and become certified as a Fire Marshal. Many areas you have police power and still have to maintain your firefighter certifications.

@LAFD027 here in michigan we got people called public safty officers, they are full time police officers, but when a fire starts, they go stright to the scine in their cars and someone else brings the appratus, they also keep their gear in the back of their potrol cars.

Can I just ask why don't you use the full facial helmets like they use here in the UK? they provide much more protection and are more comfortable on the head as well. I'd also like to say how much I love the american fire engine it looks so damn nice!

It's a traditional thing. Ben Franklin designed the style of the ones used in FDNY (and just about everywhere else in the US). It seems that those helmets are used in a lot of places west of the Rocky Mtns. I would wear the hell out of the Euro style MSA's. Considering the fact that Draeger (German) supplies numerous major Depts across the US- their masks were designed for the Euro helmets... See what more than 3 bugles gets you, shit that doesn't work well together- but it's cheap and it "looks the part".

Yellow is actually 4inch and the white hose is 2 1/2

You didn't take the test in LA. The LAFD isn't hiring, although applications are being accepted. There hasn't been any hiring since 2009.

Well yes and no. FDNY is the largest civilian FD in the US. The USAF / DOD Fire Department is much larger as it is one large agency with hundreds of very large stations.

Actually, black leather is NOT the way to go on the west coast - they're too heavy for brush (wildfire) operations. LA County firefighters have the option of black leather helmets and those who consider themselves "smoke eaters" often opt for them.

@uscgswimmer1 LAFD helmets are not new (firefighting). USAR helmets (and CERT) helmets (also not new) do look like wildfire head protection.

Hey i got a question, i'm a foreigner living in LA, i'd like to apply to the LAFD and be a firefighter is that possible or do i have to be American ?

That would be difficult if not impossible anyhow to show a firefighter dying , its as rare as the dodo to see a firefighter die .

So wrong. The LAFD (and most departments) include quality, highly trained women. There are firefighters, Paramedics, Captains, and Chief Officers who are women on the LAFD, not to mention other departments. The term "fireman" has a place - in history.

LAFD helmets look like those used in construction sites.

Firefighters come to save people obviously because they are trained to do that and they have the big ladders etc , thats not dangerous or heroic . I Train not to fall off , i do or have done rigorous safety training

That's not a fact in Los Angeles, although there was some political fallout 25 + years ago over this. If women don't meet the same standards, they are compromising firefighter safety (and their own). That's a political issue and should not be used against women. Having written that, note that some departments have fixed positions, so hiring women firefighters who only operate on engine companies, or in other non-truck/roof ops, is taking place.

I hate LA... But i love FDLA (or LAFD idk), LAPD, and LASO.

You get to go on calls that involve dealing with people, all the guys at my station do truck checks every tuesday, BBQ's and everyones invited, they all have families, and we pretty much meet new people everyday! I'm sure that moron who said no social, sex life, or family is/was ignorant.
