Delighted that you have spoiled all of us with these fantastic Lord Peter films. In fact, this will be my 2nd watch through of this series as old age does have the odd benefit - I'd forgotten all of the twists and turns along the way so all was 'new' to me. The fine actors who played Harriet is now 71 yrs of age and a Dame of the British Empire loved her playing Lady Shakelton in Downton Abbey some years back, and Lord Peter an 86 year old, as I write this in 2023. I believe the series was recorded back in 1987, some 36 years ago. So, thanks again for allowing us to watch wonderful acting and beautiful costumes and scenery.

It’s supposed to be the 20s, but it’s so much the 80s, lol. I’m thrilled to see it again after all these years.

Could anyone tell me who is the actress in 38:44? She reminds me of Carmen Silvera's madam Edith from 'Allo 'Allo, but could she be her? I checked IMDB and Wikipedia, but to no avail.

Hello, in answer to your question as to who played the part (time stamp 38.44), I assume you mean the 'landlady' of the boarding house? If so, I think it is the actress called Trudie Goodwin, famous for her role in The Bill, Sgnt. June Akland.

The landlady was played by Barbara Young. Trudie Goodwin played the dancer Cherie in episode one.

Honestly, I was surprised by the ending and Mrs Welden's pathetic behavior, in trying to be 'young' again.

As she says, she is all heart, implying she has no brains. Therefore she is ill-equipped for second-guessing her own actions. On the other hand, she would have been either ignored or shamed or ridiculed in any case. So why not follow that foolish heart, if it hurts nobody?

@@g.strobl4458 As long as it hurts nobody? What about Mrs. Weldon, who seems to be determined to become alone, heartbroken, and destitute after one or other of these young gigolos gains access to her bank account? There will be whispers and backroom comments about her foolish behavior and how a woman her age should have known better. But loneliness can take you down a road you never believed you would travel.

I've read the Sayers books and have never particularly cared for the Harriet Vane character. She can never really make up her mind and seems at her best when she is unhappy. I dont understand Wimsey's attraction to her. On the other hand, who wants to get married to someone who is always right and is, at best, mildly amusing? Ge does persist in his chase through a few books, always sorry for himself. I read somewhere that Sayers fell in love with Wimsey.

The trouble with Harriet Vane is that she doesn't want to marry Wimsey but is careful not to write the idea off altogether. This type of woman is known - rather crudely - as a ball-buster. Learn to recognise it and steer very clear of them. They will ruin your life.
