1:54 This scene is honestly so wholesome. For the first time in ages the voices in Gollum’s head left and were quiet.

The cinematography in this scene is literally genius. 0:13 - the background is dark. 0:16 - the background is light. 0:22 - additionally, because the moon is to the upper right, it is casting more of a shadow on Gollum's body when viewed from this angle.

What I found to be the most powerful aspect of Sméagol is he functioned almost as a mirror to Sam and Frodo. As much as I love Sam he was always searching for the evil in Sméagol, which is fair. He was ready to slit their throats and steal the ring, which of course would have Sam in full defense mode in order to protect Frodo effectively. However Frodo saw the good in him, he believed in him which in turn made Sméagol believe in himself. He was a reflection of how Frodo saw him, his attachment to Frodo became less about the ring and more an allure towards being good and finding himself again, however Sam took that away and reminded him he could never be good. It’s a lot like how we are today, how we won’t forgive and will only see the flaws and the dirty parts of someone and won’t let them grow and be good because they’re no longer “pure” Well constantly remind them of their mistakes when we see them try to be something we don’t think they are, which is good. Humans are not pure, they make mistakes. To be a good person is to want to do good, not to only ever be good. Sam couldn’t understand that as he only saw Sméagol as evil because he’s done evil things.

Romans 7:14-25 For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin. For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do. If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it is good. But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good. For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man. But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank God-through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.
