Sauron as Halbrand did not lie, though. Everything he actually said was or became true. He even indeed turned out to be the long-lost King of -the Southlands- Mordor. 😉

In fairness he didn't really lie..except by omission. He said he found the crest on s dead man, it was discarded as a lie of reluctance, he said he'd done evil and she accepted it. "Are you the king we were promised?" is also pretty vague. Nothing about him being an heir to a certain thrown. That made me feel a little better tbh i hadn't wanted him to have just being fully lying about everything the whole time as i was enjoying his character, even though I suspected where it was leading also hahaha

A note on the intro to the show. It's supposed to be depicting the story of Ainulindale. Which was literally the music created by the Ainur to shape the universe. The really interesting thing about the way they did the intro is that it is being made by soundwaves pushing grains of sand around on a plate to create different shapes depending on the frequency used. This is a real phenomenon using what's called a Chladni Plate that you can find video demonstrations of all over KZread. I thought it was a really creative way of visualizing how sound can move and shape matter just as it did in the Ainulindale. I'm not sure if they used CGI or practical effects in this case, but either way it's still pretty cool.

So here's the best take I've heard on the Intro sequence: the sand basically represents the songs of the Valar when time began. They all sang together in various themes and melodies, and then Melkor begins to sing and adds in a discord to the melody. With the Sand representing the song of the Valar, the Black sand seems to represent Melkors discord which is added to the song.

Celebrimbor, one of the oldest and the greatest smiths of Middle-earth, and he couldn't come to the conclusion of smelting different metal ores together?
Sauron is an immortal Maia spirit same as Gandalf and the Balrog. The Maiar are part of the race of the Ainur, angelic beings created by Eru the god of LOTR. Together with Eru they created the universe. 15 of the Ainur were greater than the others kinda like Archangles. They were called the Valar, Morgoth was one of them. They lesser class of Ainur, the Maiar, were basically their servants/apprentices. Sauron is basically a fallen angel, and Morgoth is basically the devil. The “silence” Sauron references is the silence before the creation of the universe aka the song of the Ainur. Sauron literally existed before time itself, he far more than a “sorcerer” or “wizard” as is Gandalf Saruman and the Balrogs.
I wish we could've seen your original reaction huhu But thank you for posting this anyway!
Thank you for the reaction . Was fun.
i love your reactions
Info: soo the "Istar" are basically Wizards. They knew that when he wielded the staff. Sauron is a Maiar ( basically a lower-ranking angelic being ) while Morgoth is a Valar ( The higher ranking angelic being ) and both are the strongest in their rank. Galadriel is actually kind of a princess cuz she is a descendant of House Finarfin ( a royal High Elven House in Valinor ). She is also the cousin to Celebrimbor ( The Greatest Elven Smith ) and royal blood is kind of special that's what makes Galadriel revered among Elves, She has the birthright to a few kingdoms of Elves, She is the bearer of The Elven Ring of Power, Nenya ( the ring of Water / Adament ) but she is more of a Mage role than a Fighter role the books and both in Hobbits and LORT Trilogy [ ps: She is 8000 Years Old on LORT trilogy ]. You can actually see how she fights in combat in the Hobbit Series but she is not as powerful as Sauron cuz he is a Maiar and she is an Elf ( powerful one though but still ). I think this is one of the reasons why a lot of LORT fans are upset with the show not only does the plot differ from the book but also the character arc of Galadriel. She came to Middle Earth to become a Queen and rule a kingdom away from Valinor ( the undying land where the angelic beings and elves live ). She is more of a gentle-hearted person, not this badass commander. People are disappointed cuz almost 70% of what happened in the show never happened in the books. I am personally still conflicted but I'm still watching the show cuz of the music, the set design, the CGI, the costume design, and Hot Sauron. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I really love your guys' reaction as a first-time watcher and not familiar with the lore but tries to piece things together. you guys are awesome keep up the good work. I have to agree with Marketa about Sauron's level of responsibility. Plus, the entire thing about him not wanting to leave numenor and not wanting the responsibility could've been a complete con, reverse psychology on Galadriel, as he knew her weakness which blinded her. But even if he was genuine, even though he wanted to stay out, he is responsible for his own actions, and he also flipped from loving Galadriel to completely turning on her with anger and fear tactics the second she pushed back.
Sauron was a maia, kind of like an angel.
it's amazing to see how some people watching the show also get deceived by Sauron's words and actions. We already know how evil he is and yet...🙂 It mirrors what I constantly see in real life. The show runners and the actor who plays sauron showed it really well. He knows how to get into your head, this is what makes him so dangerous. Halbrand literally walked around with that little bag with the emblem on it, of course he knew what he was doing. With Sauron you have to read between the lines and pierce through his facade. Just because he said he didn't want to go back doesn't mean he actually means it... But this is what makes him a great villain and makes the story richer. This season was focused on Galadriel (which I absolutely loved, I always wanted a backstory for her) the next season will be focused on Sauron, that will be interesting as well because we always heard about sauron, this great, big evil but didn't really know him. I love this show and I'm looking forward to more🧙♀

I think it isn't so straightforward because at least for a while in the beginning I think Sauron/Halbrand honestly was repentant and didn't want to go back to Middle earth and fight. I do think Galadriel slowly brought that side of him out again. That being said, I don't think he would have remained neutral even without her. He would have turned back to evil sooner or later.

"What is Sauron" When Sauron says "I have been awake since before the breaking of the first silence", that is not a figure of speech. He means that literally. He is a divine being who has been around since before the creation of the universe. Since before the first word was spoken. He was born from the thoughts of Eru Illuvitar (God). He was taught to sing by Eru Illuvitar. He helped sing the universe into existence before he fell. He is our equivalent of a fallen angel.
The intro music is composed by Howard Shore, who also composed the score for the earlier movies. Bear McCreary does the in-show score.
During first and second age sauron was Shap shifter, he transformed during the first age into Wolf, snake, bat and during second age into an elf
I’m loving this discussion. 😂😂😂
I'd held off fully accepting the Halbrand theory, I don't know much about the lore other than what surrounds the LOTR story and the odd bits here and there but have been learning a little more as this show haa gone on. But as soon as he went up to visit Celebrimbor and started giving him forging ideas I was like "ah shit it's ya boy" 🤣. I didn't believe The Stranger was Sauron at all. Partly because I suspected Halbrand and also partly because it was a on odd place for a reveal in my eyes. So I assumed it was a red herring. I think if they were going to reveal him as Sauron he wouldn't have been so consistently attempting to be good. Halbrand always had a secret darkness to him. Also The Stranger's theme music was far too lovely for him to be bad imho 🤣🤣🤣

The addiction analogy is a good one, but it doesn't matter if someone brought it to your place, it's ultimately your fault for indulging in it again. It's your choice. It's Sauron's choice.
Whoa! I'm fast on this one 😂
Such a damn shame we aren't able to see the reaction to the Sauron reveal...
It has such an excellent Greek tragedy vibe, the elf king said Galadriel might bring the evil she fought so they sent them away, which is what put her in the path of Sauron. And she was so focused on her revenge that she missed the enemy in front of her. And I think the reason that Sauron didn't want to return with Galadriel is because he wanted to do evil work in Numenor, I feel like he wasn't ready to take on Adar but then he's offered an army to put him on the throne and waste not, want not.
To answer your question about what Sauron is... In a nutshell, Middle Earth's mythology goes like this: 1) Creator God (Eru Ilúvatar) 2) Pantheon of "gods" (Morgoth was one of these) 3) Angel equivalents (includes Sauron, the wizards, and the balrogs) Some of them wind up with different rules governing their ability to take physical bodies. Sauron has a lot more wiggle room than the wizards, which is why they were never able to actually kill him; several times his physical body was wounded or destroyed, but he eventually generated a new one. Even when the One Ring was destroyed it didn't kill Sauron, but rather permanently crippled him (the vast majority of his power was lost).
Sauron is the same entity as Gandalf or Saruman. Morgoth if I’m not mistaken I’d basically a god but I’m not an expert so I could be wrong.

I guess the this series will fall into a similar response to Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey. Regarding ages of Middle earth it is easiest to remember by the major events: 1st age: Morgoth's rising and defeat (Sauron serves Morgoth) 2nd age: Sauron in hiding and attempts to repent, forging of the rings, Sauron's deceit and 1st rise to power and defeat (Sauron looses his physical form) 3rd age: Collapse of Gondor, Sauron rebuilding power and final destruction of the One Ring (Sauron's soul/essence is destroyed) 4th age: Starts when Aragorn is crowned King of Gondor Lots of other big events happen but these are the major events that bookend each age

Sauron wasn't 'born evil', nobody was, the Maia (Children on Illuvatar) all were spirits that served the Valar. Melkor was the most powerful and knowledgeable of the Ainur (Maia and Valar), but they were proud and impatient, desiring to create their own stuff and thus tried to manipulate Illuvatar's Great Music (which created the cosmos and most of life, this is what Sauron meant by 'before the breaking for the first silence', it's also why the intro is like it is), which led him to become Morgoth. Mairon also was the mightiest of the Maia that served Aule, the smith, but they were a perfectionist which Morgoth manipulated towards 'perfecting' Middle Earth, which turned Mairon into Sauron. That's exactly what Sauron is, the Istar are also Maia, so were the Balrogs. It's better to consider Sauron like a fallen angel, Morgoth more aligns with being Lucifer, but Sauron is also like if Lucifer had a second in command. Though they couldn't explicitly use it because they don't own the rights, the fact that Halbrand says 'call it a gift' tipped off Silmarillon readers in confirming Halbrand as Sauron, since in that book Sauron appeared under the guise of Annatar, which means Lord of Gifts, to teach the Elven Smiths how to make magic rings, passing on his craft also meant he would know what tricks to use to control whatever rings they made and bind its power to the One Ring.

The stranger is most likely Romestamo (called Pallando in Tolkien's earlier writings) because he's headed into the East (Rhun). In the lore, Romestamo and Morinehtar were sent to Middle Earth, Romestamo went to Rhun (the East) and Morinehtar went into Harad (the South). The only other wizard who went to the East definitively was Saruman, but in the Third Age. In the lore Gandalf says he went into the South but never into the East. Radagast may or may not have gone East at some point. Romestamo, and possibly Morinehtar are the only wizards who would have gone into the East in the Second Age. All of the Gandalf clues are just nods to the movies in general. If you pay attention, there are quotes by Gandalf by other characters as well, and also quotes by all the Fellowship. Bronwyn had a Sam quote from the books in (I think) ep 6. The true clue I think is that he's going East. In the lore, the South and East referred to specific places, and the East is the place the Stranger is now headed. All of this taken with recent interviews by the showrunners that say that SSN 2 will be closer to the lore than SSN 1 and I have a hard time thinking it's Gandalf.

The second season recently finished filming in the UK this June. I have also read a report on the Cinemaholic Website that was published a few days ago that the show has been renewed for a third season & will film in Hertfordshire, a sub-metropolitan county in Southern England & I have a feeling that Amazon will be making an announcement soon. Anyway, I have read that next season will focus on Sauron. Looking forward to the Normies reacting to the remaining 4 seasons.
Would you be interested in watching videos about the lore of LotR, like the story of Morgoth the first evil lord before Sauron, for example? I'd love to see that. The "Nerd of the Rings" channel did 3 parts on his story, I think.
I am certain the stranger is not Gandalf, I think he's one of the Blue Wizards whom were said to have showed up about this time in Middle Earth. Gandalf is not going to show up for another two thousand years and the stranger's destination is Southward unlike our Gray Wizard who stayed in Northwestern Middle Earth
Galadriel pulls a Mac: "Sauron is a LIAR, sometimes." Elrond: It took you 3 months to make that?
I found interesting that a lady asked what Sauron is. Tolkien created a fabulous fictional world based on Nordic legends. Sauron, whose real name was Mairon belongs to this order. In the hierarchy of Tolkien's world he belong to rase called Maiar. He was not human, he was not elf, he was not any magician or wizard. His power was coming from the nature of is mankind (Maiar race). There were very few Maiar in Tolkiens world, most of them stayed completely withdrawn from Earth things. Mairon (Sauron) thought was, let's get involved, let's rule, let's have power over Elfs and mankind. He turned his angelic powers into a pure evil over 30,000+ years he was present in Tolkien's world.
If Ewoks can fight Storm Troopers with stones and wood, Hardfoots should be able to fight too.
The Istar and Sauron are part of the Maiar, but Sauron isn't an Istar
I really enjoyed the reveal, even if I did see it coming, the way they did it was really cool and Halbrand's speech trying to justify himself and appear to seem sympathetic was a nice take on this version of Sauron and what he was like before we see him as a giant man in dark armor and then a huge flaming eye. And before you guys start feeling sympathetic to him or wonder if it would have been better if Galadriel had gone with him you need to remember that Sauron is a master manipulator, and I would caution you guys to not trust anything someone says or appears to be doing when one of the titles said person holds is "The Great Deceiver"
Sadoc had the most wholesome death scene ever.
Lol not Navi blaming Galadriel for Sauron's astrocities 🤦♂
Bruh when they didn't pick up on the "When in doubt follow your nose" giveaway it's Gandalf, he said this to Merry in lord of the rings .

Istari ARE Mayar
I'm sad no one noticed that line is the same Gandalf says in Moria with the Fellowship of the Ring.
28:44 same lol
Morgan Freeman? 🤣🤣 I know it was a joke but Sadoc's actor is Lenny Henry he's pretty famous here in the UK!
@16:19 - They have been searching for Sauron and sensed the power. The Istari later known as Gandalf is the same level of god (Maiar) as Sauron (though Sauron is much more powerful). There are no other Maiar in the mortal realm at this point (that we know of). And they don't currently know what Sauron currently looks like, as he can change his form, only that he was defeated, is missing and may not know who he is. So it makes sense they could confuse who this was. And no, they were not looking for Saurman. When he is sent to middle earth in the 3rd age he is good until he is corrupted by Sauron through the Palantir.
I think that this is one of the Blue Wizards, there is a little known about them and the timeline matches up. Gandalf, Saruman and Randagast arrive in early third age.
To answer your question the dark lord is Maiar, dark angelic being who is pure formless shadow, very much a shadow God. In the previous games shadow of war if you played it the story would make slightly more sense, unless you don't want any spoilers in the storyline.
Sauron is a Maiar just like Gandalf and fellow wizards (same with the Balrogs). They are like demigods and the wizards in particular are called the istari. Sauron turned bad by itself but the Barlgod were corrupted until they become what they are.
"Istar" is the elvish (Quenya) word for "wizard"; plural is Istari. Sindarin is "Ithron".

Annnnnd never came until the third age which was HUGE importance
I don’t think the Elves gave much thought to Men, and their kings, so Galadriel wouldn’t know their business. She sought out the information, which was wise.
In LOTR 1 , in mines of moria while choosing which way to go, gandalf says always follow your nose. That's the same thing the stranger says to nori . So you know who is gandalf.
Sauron is the same type of being as Gandalf, Saruman, Radagast, etc. He is one of the Maiar, created by the Valar. It is believed that the Valar created the maiar, and use them to positively impact and guide the world, since they cannot physically go to middle-earth. Just like it is also believed that the Valar send the eagles to help at times of great need, to help tip the scales.
They probably confused Gandalf with Sauron because they are both Maiar. And there are only 6 Maiar in Middle Earth (Sauron and the 5 Istari)
Was wait for this!!! Loved the show. good setup to the main lore for second age. I deff do not like that they changed up somethings from tolkiens lore but love seeing his lengendarium come to life.
Thanks amazon, I was looking for the actual Lord of the rings movies...
Sauron, Gandalf(the White), Balrogs and other Istari are all maiar(lesser angels) so not valar level (archangels)like Morgoth or Manwes but they are still angels, and Sauron is the strongest of the Lesser Angels in Arda (earth) also the last alliance was about a million elves , dwarves and men and Sauron destroyed a big (estimated lowest 25 %- highest 45%) chunk of the army by himself. P.S none of Saurons words are to be believed he worshipped Morgoth before the creation of the world, one of Saurons many Names is The Deciever he is manipulating her and created this whole situation from the very start (pretending to be dead was also part of the plan) so that he could get there he would have used Galadriel and killed her and his actor confirmed it in the post episode interview
A shame we didn’t get the blind reaction
I freaking loved this episode.

Did you know Nori and meteor man and Poppy and Adar and Bronwyn never existed in the books!? 😬😬😮😮😮😵💫😵💫😵💫
Someone please let Navi and the others know that this show IS the Second age. Traditionally it is believed the Istar showed up in the middle of the Third age (though some might have showed up in the second age so this isn't completely outside canon). The First age was the fight against Morgoth and ended with his defeat.

Tolkien changed events several times. I can't remember them all but in one version he had all the Istari arrive around the same time in the 3rd age, and in another version the blue wizards arrive in the 2nd age while the rest appeared later. It would seem Tolkien never quite fleshed out the history of his writings before he died. It's probably one of the main reasons why there is so much confusion and debate on lore.
Crazy how all of the Evil characters always start out as Physically attractive. -Voldemort started off as Tom Riddle who was hot -Darth Vader started off as Anakin who was hot -And Sauron started off as Halbrand, who is also hot.. lol

For some Knowledge, Eru Illuvatar is the one ultimate God think Christian, Islam, Jewish God. He creates the Valar which to simplify things are similar to the Greek, Egyptian pantheon. Now Melkor is the strongest of these lesser gods, but Eru Illuvatar also creates countless other spirits called Maia think of these like angels from the Bible and just like angels they also have a hierarchy of lesser and greater. They dwell in the eternal halls for millions possibly even billions of years. Eru Illuvatar brings all the Valar together to sing in harmony at the birth of the universe or in this case you might say Middle Earth is the only physical plane in existence. Melkor the mightiest of the Valar is jealous of Eru as he is the only being that can truly create something out of nothing and create anything. Melkor becomes corrupted and over time corrupts Sauron who would be one of the archangels in strength. They fall to Middle Earth gaining physical form becoming stronger and weaker in different ways. Sauron is similar to Gandalf as they are both Maia, but Eru Illuvatar sent the Ishtar to Middle Earth as protectors as such their power is limited with rules that bind them, and Sauron overtime became stronger more knowledgeable as he was the one of the first to gain physical form.
Sauron is an evil Angel basically. The Istari (Order of Wizards) are also Angels in flesh. They being to the same spiritual beings called the Ainur. The Ainur is divided into two classes. The Valar are the most powerful and lord over all other Ainur. They are the gods of Middle-Earth. Among them was the Valar called Morgoth, originally Melkor he is the first Dark Lord and Sauron’s master. He brought evil into Middle-Earth since before it’s creation. The Maiar are all the other Ainur that serve the Valar. Gandalf, Sauron, Saruman, Radaghast etc… are all Maiar. The Ainur were created by and serve the one true god: Eru Illuvatar. Tolkien’s representation of the Christian God.

Up up up Your only mistake here was saying Eru is Tolkien's representation of the Christian God, he would be deeply offended by that since he hated that sort of alegory. It would be more correct to say Ilúvatar is the monotheistic all powerful Creator God of Tolkien's legendarium. But yeah great job summing it up 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Entertaining?
“Wizard” is thought to come from “wise one” but with a negative connotation (“-ard” means someone who does something a lot or is an example of a type, but like drunkard or coward or bastard), so like someone who goes around giving advice no one wants. 😄
Galadriel didn't know it was Sauron. She thought she was pushing a reluctant king to go back to his kingdom and fight evil. If she knew he was Sauron you think she would have? Sauron would love it if we blamed her and not him. He lied to her by not telling her who he was. Is that what a repentant person does? Sauron here deceiving everyone ha.
