I always loved the character of Maeglin, and his father Eöl. They seem to be the only elves who "fell to the dark side" in Tolkien's lore. Maeglin is almost the Darth Vader of Silmarillion. And that final scene where Tuor and Maeglin duelling on the walls of Gondolin is just epic.

  • @CivilizationEx

+rasnac I agree, his father Eol, is actually one of my fav LOTR characters of all time, even when he was standing before Turgon, surrounded by enemies, he never flinched, and was a badass to the end.

+rasnac One might argue that Feanor, in a way, "fell to the dark side" too. I guess a lot of elves have their moments -- even Thingol, an overall good king, sought to have Beren be destroyed by ordering him on a suicide quest. Not a very nice move.

Perhaps Feanor was too resentlful with knowing that his mother prefer to stay in the halls of Mandos than to live again and be a mother to him. He was resentful that his Father married again but nonetheless his anger and obsession for vengeance against all opposition stems from the killing of his Father whom he loves more than anyone or anything else. To add to the injury his "precious creation - the Slimaril Jewels" were stolen by Melchor. However, I could not understand why he was so filled with anger for the death of his Father Finwe since they are immortal and soon his Father will live again after spending time in the Hall of Mandos.

And now that 2 of those have been published i think it will be the next, which im very much looking forward to. If you want the source, read the Preface to Children of Húrin page 10-12.

Did anyone record any numbers about the size of the armies involved? Gondolin only went to war once and was able to make it back relatively intact. So it would have been no push over to take the city. Morgoth's army must have been the strongest dark forces had ever been able to field.

Glorfindel of Gondolin and Glorfindel of Rivendell are the same person. Glorfindel was resurrected back to life by the Valar for his glorious sacrifice. Glorfindel was also rewarded with becoming more powerful than he was before. He was sent back to middle earth either on his own or with the Istari.

Same way that the One Ring found its way from being attached to Sauron's severed finger at the base of Mount Doom to the hands of a Stoor Hobbit subsisting on fish and the occasional goblin in the depths of the Misty Mountains; passing from one person to another in such unlikely circumstances that one might get the mistaken impression that it was all happening by chance.

I wish they made a movie about this part. For what I've seen in the franchise and like Peter Jackson, it seem they only make a movie of Tolkien's works when it comes to Hobbits. I mean come on, no need only for that. There's a bigger world there in the past and in the present than those Halflings scurrying around the story in the War in the North and in the War of the Rings.

+Hugo Kivilo Eru interfered because the Numenorians broke a sacred law, travelling to Aman. Aside from a great offense like that, Eru does not interfere in the events of Arda, and the Valar try not to, only interfering when someone like Tuor travels to them begging for their help.

+CivilizationEx But to be honest, destroy the whole Numenor was way too much. Why not just destroy the king and his armada ? Thus with the king and his followers destroyed, the faithful could retake the crown and restore the kingdom of elf-friends. But no, let destroy everything and kill everybody because of the mistakes of a few, and also because I am pissed. Eru is pretty much like old-testament God

He did die, but the Valar were so impressed with him and how he died a hero, he was allowed to return to Middle Earth, given a new body, to act as an emissary of the Valar and granted special powers, so he actually returned during the second age and was alive for the other events that happened.
