Chamberlain was the most intelligent of the skesis up there with the scientist, he was the secretary of state in the hierachy. He was also the most conniving and cunning most likely to backstab to get his way which is what this scene highlights. Had been stalking them for a while.

The way that his "please"s become more and more insistent and aggressive toward the end always put me on edge. The most unsettling thing about the Chamberlain is that, despite the fact you know he's wicked and can't be trusted, he always manages to be just persuasive enough to make you doubt yourself and almost believe his lies. Very well-written villain.

Just his movements are so disturbing here. None of the Skeksis move that smoothly anywhere else in the film. They move slowly and stiffly because of how big and bulky the puppets were. But here it looks like he floats.

SkekUng is gonna knock SkekSil a few rungs off his ladder. It may be one reason he seems more defeated in the movie. Seriously when Ung challenged him what was he gonna do? Fight hand to hand combat? He chose Trial by Stone because he did not know any other way to try and deal with the general to avoid physical harm. And he lost badly. (If you watch closely Sil is looking around horrified nearly the whole time of the trial. He is afraid of SkekUng but acts all cocky and cool, trying to hide it and not seem weak to the others.)

And yet, everyone who interacts with him takes him at his word. It finally takes the protagonist Wirt saying to his face that the Beast is obviously a liar for him to be defeated.

I always wondered why Chamberlain's grammar was simplistic in this scene, since in the castle scenes his grammar was fine. I had assumed he was talking down to the Gelflings, or trying to seem less threatening. But now that I know the original cut of the film had the Skekses speaking their own language, and that the Skeksis language was also limited and basic in structure, it makes a whole lot more sense that Chamberlain would have difficulties when speaking in the Gelfling's language.

I always wondered to myself whether he was really being sincere or not. It's almost a sort of personality test, judging whether one is an optimist or pessimist. It's all too easy to assume the scheming chamberlain is just trying to trick them, and in the end he even does turn in Kira to the rest of them. But he only does so after they attack and wound him, so it's fair to assume the deal was totally off at that point. But for him to be trying to deceive them, he goes about it in a very convincing manner. He doesn't omit anything, and his plan seems solid. He even admits to being an outcast and having his own agenda in bringing them back. If his only goal really was to haul them to the castle and buy his station back, then why did he stop the garthrim? Naturally, he wouldn't receive credit, but he could just as easily let the creature kill them and bring back the corpses. Another angle would suggest that he would betray them simply because he's "evil", but honestly, the Skeksis are much more complex than that. It's dubious whether some of the others would bother to listen to an agreement, the Priest would almost certainly be opposed, but I can see the chamberlain in particular giving it a shot. And if things go south, he can just claim it was his plan to bring them there and kill them all along

  • @animefan77

This all depends on how gray or black/white your morality is. If gray, then Chamberlain is genuine in his deal, thinking that he can befriend them enough to not pursue their destiny and after they go to the castle together, he'd try to at least have them be sent to an isolated place until the Great Conjunction has ended- leading to a grateful, now immortal group of Skeksis will at least allows the Gelflings to live- plus he's back with the others so it's a win-win. And since Jen attacked Chamberlain, then he's now justified in that Gelflings in his eyes are as inherently destructive to their race as the other Skeksis believe them to be. If black/white, then Chamberlain is a deceptive jerk that lured the two Gelflings to get himself back.

Even though I now know -somewhat- the movie making aspect, this film will always connect me to who I was at 10 years old. Everyone who was involved in it's creation, I thank you. However, he is the corrupt side of his original form. Similar to Piccolo from DBZ. The Mystic has the control of sinful nature, but in return is slower and in parts weaker. The Skeksis have no control of their sinful nature and don't care then some.
