Nice vid. As a pip player I noticed that attacking with long pips requires much training but the reward is big. Most opponents meet passive and defensive pip players and are not used to aggressive pip style including fake loop topspin

The name for this technique that I have always heard is "roll" and the specific technique for producing it varies considerably on the rubber you are using. The success rate of the shot increases greatly if the incoming shot has some underspin on it, though the deceptive characteristic reduces as the underspin increases, so for deception against heavy underspin, playing a chop that will arrive with light topspin is better (but terrible against opponents who read pip spin well). In any case, the most common LP roll technique is to fix the wrist and keep the blade angle fairly vertical, then swing through the ball from low to high. There are some LP rubbers where adding wrist is useful but you always use less wrist than for the equivalent reverse rubber. For ease of practice, starting out with a slow, soft, grippy, defensive rubber like P4, Neptune Soft or the like, particularly with a thin (0.5) sponge, will make finding the basic technique very easy, then adjust for the specific 0x rubber you are using on your main racquet. Despite the video's warnings, it is really not much more difficult than learning a reverse topspin, just different and more situational.

it's a nice backhand shot, very useful shot. but i wouldn't exactly call it topspin

in fact if you wish, it looks like you really could use a real topspin motion to attack. but that would be less effective than the shot you show here

term "attacking underspin" will mix up all ways of attacking underspin and thus would be much less clearer

I’ve played with long pips for many years and could attack with both backhand and forehand with OX pips. The more correct terms I would use according to my playing level is to use a side spin topspin action. So when I twiddle I use the same stroke with the live rubber and the speed and spin becomes the deception. The only reason I stopped playing with long pips OX for the last year was due to me breaking pips every 3 weeks. The aggressive topspin attacking just isn’t what the pips is designed for. I hence opted for an anti spin rubber which isn’t as deadly as the OX but it lasts very much longer.

@birthright94 some anti does reverse but not as much as pips. The strength of the anti i use is the lack of pace. Yes you get many variants of pips and antis which are all very dependent on the blade being used. My strength is being able to play very similar shots while I twiddle so I don't have to over think the shot. My most recent challenge where I do get caught out is that with long pips I could easily feel which side I twiddle to during a rally. However with the anti and live I lose track since I don't have the feeling of the pips on my index finger. I need to realize that the anti is more slick as compared to the live rubber but I'm not there as yet. I especially get caught out on the pushing/ chopping stroke. The side spin drive with either the live or the anti is very similar and not too much of an issue.

Your backhand chop is non-existent. You just pass the ball, allowing your opponent to easily attack you. You should start training that movement with the correct technique and you should also modify the way you play and move. Crouch lower to be faster, perform better forehand and backhand topspin, and reach more balls.

@@Sypachevskii You have the capacity to improve a lot but your pride is not going to help you perfect your technique in this sport, quite the opposite. I'm a coach, and when I play I do backhand topspin a lot with medium pimples. I comment for free to people who I think have the potential to improve. I don't care about money nor do I have time for sarcastic comments. Good luck.
