I bought a 2004 Sequoia Limited a few years ago. I searched and searched for one in good condition with low mileage. I picked one up for $13k with 110,000. It had an amazing Car Fax report. It had been garaged and all the maintenance done religiously. Only other thing I really wanted was a green one. thought the odds are I won't find that specific color but again I got lucky and found a green one with absolutely no dints, window chips and no repairs of body damage. I've had Ford pickups, GMC pickups, Nissan Titan etc and I can say that this Sequoia is the best vehicle I've ever owned. Even though it was 17yo when I bought it. The only thing I have done was to get a new set of tires.....it had good tires on it but they were 11 years old so I figured they wouldn't hold up. AND.....I had to replace the rear hatch that you spoke about. Don't be intimidated to do it yourself. Several good video's to show how to do it and it really wasn't that difficult and I got a metal latch and it works great. Thanks for your video.

same here with rear door latch. i got the amazon metal one and the arm that pulls the cable bent. i took it out and slightly over bent it back, and fastened the cable more securely to the door panel to get a little stronger pulling angle. have been gentle with it and its been working great.

Now as a grandmother I was looking for a reliable vehicle that would allow me to put 3- 4 car seats with no problem. Sold my 2004 Tacoma w/ 218 thousand miles and found a 2004 sequoia with 151 thousand miles. My Mechanic said it was in great shape, However I did have them replaced the ball joints and just yesterday tailgate decide to not opening. Other then that glad to see yours has held up having over 300thousand miles! I also feel it the suv vehicle out there!

She wants a new SUV, and I'll let her get whatever....but we will NOT be getting rid of the Sequoia. It's the most bullet-proof car I've ever owned, and we will own it until either it or we have died. If they made new Gen 1's, we'd buy another.

They are interference engines but if you lose the timing belt at low RPMs chances are you will have no bent valves. I'm an automotive tech and I've replaced over the years between 10 and 15 timing belts on first gen sequoias. Out of all of them 3 had bent valves. Also a nice little trick the back latch is notorious for breaking you can take and run the cable out of the lower left hand tag hole and use it as a manual release. Works great and no more replacing the latch.

@@brintwalton7568 no that’s just for the latch problem. My window wasn’t working after sitting for a while, and I took it apart and reassembled and it’s worked great since. I have heard if you take a credit card or something and run it all the way around where the window seals to the weather stripping that may break it loose. If you can hear it trying it may just be stuck. Aparently that happens pretty frequently.

So something to note on the rear hatch. Alot of latch HANDLES break and people go through a ton of them not realizing that the handle is not the problem. The latch/lock mechanism on the bottom of the hatch that latches door down gets dirty/corroded and very stiff. As a result the handles or the cable starts wearing out because they can’t handle the increased resistance. I just replaced mine as it was too far gone but keeping them lubricated is critical.

So glad I just stumbled upon this video. I know its old but gonna throw my comment out there anyway lol. quick story, I was looking to sell or possible trade my car and have someone offering to trade me their '03 sequoia 4x4 straight up for my crown vic. The sequoia has 225k on it, which I thought is crazy lol but it runs and drives soooo smooth and is in really good looking condition, clean. however I know absolutely nothing about toyota's, never have owned one. I've always been a ford guy, and my crown vic is simple to work on and reliable as heck. Only thing right off he mentioned is that the CEL is on for a YAW sensor, is that a deal breaker? Is this possibly a good trade considering mileage difference and value? I do like my ford crown vic it's amazing with only 125k miles BUT I've been wanting to sell it and get a jeep or something to overland with anyways and I've never really seen one of these sequoia's before now. Cash value I guess would be $2500 as that's what I paid for my car to trade. Sorry about the long post and thanks in advance for the reply.

I did the timing belt myself. The parts were about 300. I got Aisin which is basically oem replacement. I’d venture to say to have a shop do it you’d be looking at around 7-800 for that job. The starter is under the intake manifold which is kind of a dumb design but I’d say probably 3-400 for the starter. That’s definitely not a common issue. It’s pretty rare that they go bad.
