Looking for seashells after a hurricane. I had Sanibel Island to myself!

Looking for seashells after a hurricane is probably one of the best times to hunt for shells. This is the first post-hurricane beach trip I made and there are 3 more amazing trips to share!

Oh, it's so good to hear the voice we all love, the voice of our Beach Angel! I used to go crazy trying to get onto Santa Rosa Island after a hurricane had passed. I wanted to see all the amazing things that the surf had thrown onto the shore. I love the sunray calico scallops! I want to find someone selling those on Etsy, along with the black ones. I have a bunch of shells in my basket there. If I ever find my high speed drill and the jewelry findings I bought, I'll make myself a couple of necklaces. For those who might think that my memory is failing, my dear husband has Alzheimer's Disease and he goes on "straightening binges" from time to time. I had bought a drill and findings to make jewelry for Sharmon's auction and, before I could even put my new purchases away in my craft room, he had moved them to a place where I can't find them! I only hope he didn't throw it all away! 🥴 I gotta say, it is so wonderful and almost mystical to be on a beach all alone. This solitary trip reminds me of how it was when I was a child, when I would walk for miles along the beach and see only a few little shorebirds. I'd leave little piles of shells in my wake, and pull off my t-shirt, tie it to make a bag and walk back home in my swimsuit with my shirt full of shells. Oh, I see you have a fighting conch friend, darling! I thought of you when I found one small fighting conch shell in the shell collection I recently purchased. One day, I might just surprise you by coming down there to walk along the beach with you, Angel. It's on my list of things to do when the storm in my life has ended. I will need to find healing in the sea. I think the blue eyes of the fighting conchs are so pretty! I wonder what we look like to them? That was a lovely sunrise! You're right, Sharmon, it does make you feel freaky to know that, only a few hours' drive north, the folks of the Big Bend were losing all they held dear. I always pray as I watch the storms making landfall. I know how that feels. I think I still have PTSD when it comes to the big hurricanes. It was so wonderful to hear your voice, dear ftiend, and to know that you are safe. I'm so glad you found that pony! It's a real beauty! Just like you, dear Beach Angel. Thank you so much for everything you do for us and for your adopted home. Congratulations on the success of your recent auction! i wish I was there to help you send all that treasure out to its new owners. That will be a job and a half! I'm sending my best love to you and to all of my beachy friends out there! May you all have the most wonderful week ever! 🐚 Rebecca, The Lost Mermaid🧜

Back in my care giver days I was taking care of an elderly couple and the wife had Alzheimer's. One day she took my car keys that I left beside my purse on the kitchen table. I looked for probably 2 hours before I found them very deep in her dirty clothes hamper😂😂 from that day forward my purse stayed in my car and my keys in my pocket😊😊😊

It's such a tough call when I want to do something that brings me joy when I know the same thing is causing havoc elsewhere. I thought not airing the episode right away was the least I could do to show respect for those who were not "enjoying" the hurricane. It was a small collection of shells but it will be interesting to see the crescendo of finds from the first shell day to the 4th shell day. It's true - the treasures take a few days to show up but I was willing to risk a trip to the beach just in case. I was delighted to see such a pretty sunrise and of course snag a couple of those seashells. I hope you and G have a good week! XOXOXO

"Hey there, Penny!" called Fred, the Florida Fighting Conch, as he swam toward his friend who was a Pen Shell, a bivalve with a sleek and shiny black shell, looked up, her siphons twitching with curiosity. Fred did a little flip in the water, showing off his spiral-shaped, colorful shell. "Well, Penny, today's the day I'm going to share the incredible tale of "Gus" and why we gastropods have something you bivalves don't-an "Operculum!" Penny's curiosity piqued, and she extended her foot and threads slightly, anchoring herself to the sandy seabed. "Yaaaay!" The Florida Fighting Conch cleared his squishy throat and began his tale with exaggerated enthusiasm. "Once upon a time, in the deep, dark depths of the undersea world, there lived a curious and inventive snail named Gus. Gus was tired of always being exposed to the dangers of the ocean, like hungry predators and fierce currents." Penny chuckled. "Sounds like Gus had quite an adventurous spirit?." Fred nodded, "Indeed, he did! So, Gus set out on a mission to create the ultimate defense mechanism. He started experimenting with various ideas, like growing extra spiky shells or surrounding himself with sea anemones." Penny's siphons quivered with amusement. "And did any of those ideas work?" Fred shook his head. "Not at all! In fact, they usually attracted more attention from predators. But Gus was undeterred. He was determined to create something foolproof." Penny leaned in, eager to hear more. "And then what happened?" "Ah, here's where it gets interesting," Fred exclaimed. "One day, while Gus was snooping around an abandoned shipwreck, he found a discarded jar of peanut butter. Now, Gus wasn't sure what peanut butter was, but it had a round, flat lid that gave him an idea." Penny's siphons twitched in anticipation. "What did he do with the peanut butter lid?" Fred continued with a grin, "Gus decided to modify the lid and attach it to his shell. It was like a portable door! He called it an 'operculum,' and whenever danger approached, he'd slam it shut, sealing himself safely inside." Penny burst into laughter. "So, he carried a peanut butter lid around on his shell?" Fred nodded enthusiastically. "Exactly! And it worked like a charm but it was too colourful and it scratched his skin a lot. He didnt like it after a while. It drew attention to him and predators would try to nibble on Gus more. When the plastic cracked in time the predators would sneak under the cracks and bite!. It became quite the burden and so he got rid of it." "Wait, Fred," Penny interjected, her curiosity still piqued. "You can't just leave me hanging there! I need to know more about how Gus turned that peanut butter lid into an operculum like yours." "Well " Fred continued "Gus took inspiration from the underwater world around him. He noticed that some seaweed had a particular quality - it was flexible and strong, yet lightweight." Penny nodded, captivated. "And then what?" "Well,Gus gathered a bunch of this special seaweed, colourful and sleek, and began weaving it together using his mucus as a natural adhesive. It took a lot of twisting, turning, and a few broken strands along the way, but he was determined." Penny leaned in even closer, eager to hear every detail. "How did he secure it to his shell?" "With more creativity!" Fred replied. "Gus realized that he needed something to fasten the woven seaweed onto his shell securely. So, he scavenged tiny, smooth pebbles from the ocean floor. Using a mix of mucus and a touch of clever knot-tying, he attached these pebbles to the seaweed, creating a beautiful and functional operculum." Fred's voice grew a touch more solemn. "Well, Gus's invention was so successful that other gastropods in the undersea world started adopting it. Over time, operculums became a common feature among our kind, providing us with protection and peace of mind." Penny the Pen Shell smiled, grateful for Fred's quirky and strange but informative story. "You're absolutely right, Fred. We may be different, but we all play a vital role in the tapestry of life beneath the waves." The Fighting Conch smiled and turned to Penny and said " Hey Pens! Why did Gus and his operculum become a comedy show on the reef ?... " Because he was a fun guy and he sealed the deal !!! And with that, Finn and Pen Shell continued their underwater adventure, laughing and appreciating the unique features that made each of them so special .

Love your videos! Q: If you find a conch shell or whelk that is small, if you throw it back in the ocean, does it continue to grow? (sorry; am new to this shelling thing!) I really want to come to SWFL. I would most likely park my butt in that mass of shells and dig through that all day! I doubt I'd move much at all. I live in PA and go to MD beaches. We dont have ANY bigger shells around so what you find in FL just amazes me! Thank you for showing us your videos and teaching us all about shelling!

If there is a critter or animal in the shell then yes, the critter/animal and shell will continue to grow. These snails build its shell bigger as it gets bigger. When the animal dies, we can collect its shell. Now these snails are different than hermit crabs that do not make their own shell. Those crabs have to find their homes. I get to see both the snails and hermit crabs at the beach. 🐚🌴🌊 PS - I have heard that you may be able to find some shells at Sandy Hook!

Upon further research, it looks like it helps the animal burrow into the ground. The 2 shell pieces are never really together at the top since the animal filter feeds and it uses the "base" of its shell to burrow into mud and sand. What a great question!
