Looking Back on Batman V Superman - Adam Rants Movies

Ойын-сауық

Now that the Justice League: The Snyder Cut has been confirmed for HBO Max next year. I thought it would be a good time to revisit my rant on Batman V Superman. The polarizing film that divided the audience. Some of them think it's the great superhero movie ever while others think it's a total mess. I fall in the latter camp but I do think it has its moments of greatness. I reflect on BVS in another episode of Adam Rants Movies.

Personally I loved this movie I'm glad they didn't do the MCU route because Snyder's original plan wasn't to build this huge movie universe it was a 5 movie arc and that was it. It was different and this movie wasn't afraid to take risks and be different.

  • @jonoave

Glad that you brought up the Batman being the dumbest version, so-called "Greatest Detective in the World'. He got completely played by Lex. In the movie and clarified by Lex, Lex knew the secret identity of Batman and Superman (kidnapping Martha and Lois). Yet Batman knows nothing about Superman despite being obsessed him. Also, with Batman being obsessed with super-powered beings he was not aware of Aquaman, Wonder woman etc. Basically this movie is also saying that Lex Luthor was the one who put together the Justice League by identifying all those superpowered beings. Batman was just the recruiter.

  • @Turo602

    @Turo602

Batman wasn't dumb, he was set on killing Superman because he rationalized it was the right thing to do for the planet. This Batman isn't the Batman from Suicide Squad. The destruction of Metropolis fucked him up the same way when his parents died. That's the whole point of the movie. Batman has changed. I also don't see see why Batman would have known about Aquaman or Wonder Woman considering their hidden away from the rest of the world. And Lex has always been smarter than Batman.

Honestly, I think this film is great. For me Man of Steel is about a 9/10, as good a Superman origin movie as there could ever be, and I loved Zack Snyder's direction for this franchise. I think BvS is more an 8/10, and has the best film portrayal of Batman to date (both in persona and as Bruce Wayne). The only real criticisms I have are that they played the Death of Superman card way too early, and the portrayal of Lex doesn't work for me. I'd have much rather had a traditional Lex played by Bryan Cranston as originally rumoured. However, as much as I like these first two films, I think Justice League is awful (and butchers Batman). I hope the Snyder cut can actually give us a more fitting conclusion to this chapter of the DCEU.

This movie mixed the death of superman, dark knight returns, and the justice league with elements of Flashpoint. Why? All of these deserve their own movie. All of these got their own (animated) movie. Why didn’t they have Green Arrow instead of Wonder Woman? Why did you include Doomsday and Lex into this? I would’ve preferred if Batman v Superman were just Batman v Superman. Not a 120 minute fight, but if the plot were about Superman and Batman’s moral code and if it were actually a deconstruction of comic book stereotypes, just like the original dkr. We should’ve gotten a solo Ben Affleck Batman movie before getting this so he didn’t feel *as* forced.

WB went for a decent start with ”Man of Steel”. Not my fave, but it gave the character some time. Then they went rushing. ”BvS” was supposed to be a sequel to ”MoS”. And suddenly Batman was shoehorned into the project. And then WB threw in a whole bunch of characters since they wanted an ”Avengers”-like hit without doing the ground work. ”BvS” was good in parts but at the same time - like you’re saying - a bit much very rushed. Then came ”Suicide Squad” where the Comic-Con trailer was imho AWESOME. But with the dour vibe, the peppy trailer coming out next, left most of everything on the cutting floor (including Ayer). By that time, I kinda zoned out how WB tried to milk franchises (looking at you LEGO) and when I heard that Snyder’s plan was to do 2 ”JL” movies and that they then were supposed to become just one... The higher-ups at WB should have known better than just go for a shortsighted cash grab. Has no one learned their lesson from what happened in 1997 (Joel Schumacher did, but beside that)?

I never understood the complaint about Wonder Woman being rushed, when she was in the film for a lot longer before she became Wonder Woman. Meanwhile, everyone celebrates Spider-Man in Civil War when he's literally introduced one scene before the big fight and then written out after. I also hate the notion that DC needs to be like Marvel and do pointless filler solo films before bringing everyone together. Zack Snyder's vision was akin to Lord of the Rings, but with superheroes, and Superman as the central protagonist and the rest of the cast gradually coming in, like in any other film. But the problem is that everyone knows these characters already, and because Marvel already did things their way, DC must abide to their formula too. A lot of people really missed the point of these movies and that's because they weren't really made for the casual audience. Everyone thinks Superman needs to be like Christopher Reeve and that Batman needs to be like in the cartoons. These characters are so iconic and people already have these preconceived notions about who they are, meanwhile nobody knew shit about The Avengers until the films and so they just roll with it. Snyder has some real comic book knowledge and that's why his films turn out the way they do, packed with detail and long. Just look at Watchmen and even BvS. Nothing he did with these characters is new, but people act like he's out here raping their heroes just because it doesn't fit their personal idea of them from wherever they first fell in love with them. Whether you love or hate the movies, the truth is, this is WB's doing, Snyder at least had the vision to take on their load and turn it into a coherent arc, which is why it ended up being Lord of the Rings-esque, had he finished his 5 films. But the evidence is all there. WB's been trying to do BvS and Justice League for years before Snyder, they've been trying to get Doomsday on film for years before as well. Snyder just took all that and somehow made 3 completely separate projects like Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, and Justice League flow like a trilogy or epic.

Ah, the DCtard. Just kidding, you guys are a breath of fresh air, my main gripe was the "miscast" of Lex (really wanted Billy Zane, and still feel like Jesse added nothing noteworthy), and also I don't like how Superman has to always lose to Batman, even in this iteration where he is imperfect (killing Zod...but he really had no choice). Then again, this "Man of Steel" might be the most innocent/naive incarnation yet, not like the characters from "The Boys". I'd rather have something interrupt the fight, rather than have Superman just lose...but I get it's based off of previous stories, so it is what it is. Super speed?Nah, let's just give Batman Kryptonite. How did Batman even know in this, but not know about... Martha? lol, ok now I understand the hate for Martha, but that's why something else should have interfered with their fight. This is the first time Clark encounters Kryptonite, right? The first movie didn't have it, just...Krypton air or something. I actually like the movie a lot, generally prefer DC, the only hero movies I dislike are Iron Man 3, Thor Ragnarok (it was ok, but the God of Thunder loses to literally everyone in that, like gadgets and STRONG. FEMALE. LEADS.) I just want to like it more like all the other Superman stuff: Smallville, DCAU (which had Batman v Superman in "The World's Finest"), even BvS animated movie made sense since they were old so Batman would easily know everything about Supes.

  • @Goblin_Hands

WW was fine too. Doomsday was rushed though...Lex somehow knew to make an abomination from Zod's body just because he dislikes Superman (also kinda ruins Doomsday more than how everyone complains Wolverine ruined Deadpool). Doomsday was originally created as a weapon of sorts on Krypton, not by accident on Earth by Lex using a Krytonian corpse randomly. Also, what would happen if Darkseid won? The whole planet would perish, surely that's not good for buisiness.

Jesse Eisenberg was horribly miscast. I don't understand why Lex Luthor is so consistently miscast and misrepresented on film and TV. Michael Rosenbaum was the best by default because he actually played the character seriously and was still becoming the Lex Luthor who loathes Superman. And I definitely agree about the Martha thing. Narratively, it makes a lot of sense, but the execution could have been better. But ultimately, I think the fight could have been so much better and should have ended for different reasons. As for Doomsday, he wasn't created by accident. The technology to do it was on the Kryptonian ship and Lex learned a lot of things from it that he shouldn't have, which is why he went crazy at the end. But that's not also the real Doomsday. In Man of Steel, during the Krypton sequence, you can see a shattered moon, which in the comics was done by Doomsday. So Doomsday was already created on Krypton and was meant to reappear during one of the Justice League films. The Doomsday we see in BvS is a newborn version of him, since he was literally just created by Lex.

If your 'Versus' Movie don't even manage to do that then you fail Big Time! And BvS failed miserably at it. Even Freddy vs. Jason (2003) and Alien vs. Predator (2004) got that right for Fuck's Sake!

Even though the director’s cut still has issues, I think the studio screwed up by not releasing that version theatrically. To me, it’s obviously the better movie and the result would’ve been stronger reviews and higher box office. The Doomsday finale is still a mess, though. Shouldn’t there have been more focus from the three heroes on retrieving the spear? Instead, Lois Lane is the one actually searching for it.

If Zach had a brain in his head he would have used that flash scene early in the film and had it be the catalyst for Batman deciding to go after Superman. His only reason seemed to be that because Superman was really powerful he wanted to kill him before he went bad which is bafflingly stupid. There was supposed to be some plot by lex luthor making Bruce progressively more distrustful and angry but it didn't make any sense and there was supposed to be some pl ot by lex where Superman was framed for killing all the villagers in the opening scene even though they were shot by bullets. It was like he was smoking crack when he was making the movie and never went back and looked at it sober to realize it didn't make any sense. But it's a shame he didn't use that dream sequence instead because then it could have gotten paid off in Justice league where he realized that the entire reason he went after Clark was because he saw the dream sequence and got the wrong impression of it and so when flash comes back a second time it finally makes sense.

Or they could have split this movie into parts cause this kind of felt like two different movies slapped together, the first half felt like a gritty political thriller and second and third felt like a cartoon show, they don't really fit together ,in my opinion they should have split this movie and the first movie would have been about the build up of their fight and second part should have introduced wonder woman , doomsday and the weird dream sequence, plus this would have allowed audiences to spent more with their characters like Superman and lois lane.

Dude you are funny and keep the work up, but I get that movies are subjective but nobody can objectively say that the ultimate edition (which is the real zack snyder film as he intended) lacks in storytelling too. There everything is addressed and flows, and the only flaw that still remains is that the doomsday finale still feel a little forced. Other than that, the Ultimate Edition makes for an objectively "enormous" movie that you can like it or not but surely deserves to be seen, and that is the reason why Zack Snyder as a director is able to gather such a fan base.

I really think that if he just put those two battle because of their moral code , and move all that Martha part out, it would be perfect..It didn't have any sense to me. Why? Because of Superman's superspeed.. I mean he is faster than a bullet, and he has an x-ray vision so he could go and search .. and find his mother by himself .. and he could do that in a blink of an eye.. before Lex even notice that.. and he didn't need Batman at all .. Second.. he could just flout over Batman and explain it to him.. because.. you know, he can fly also..but I guess , we needed that fight. This movie made Superman weak and stupid.. and I don't like that.

Black panther is set up well. His relationship with his father, the mantle, his title, his sense of responsibility. His quest for revenge is the driving force of the plot. He has a revelation at the end giving him a full character arc throughout the movie. Spider-man had 5 prior movies. 2 of which were origin stories. Also having him in the film at all was a bonus. WB had the rights to wonder woman aka Diana of themyscira(a name the general public doesn't even know) for decades. And they introduce this character that has never had a movie in a film where she has no arc. Get your head out of your bum and smell reality. It was rushed and lacklustre. Plus doomsday sucked 😋
