I was in tears thru much of this presentation. I loved to visit my grandparents home in Saldee, Ky. My uncle Sol and Aunt Mary Emily Clay had a small grocery store connected to the post office there. My Aunt was the post mistress. How I wish I could go back to that wonderful time in my life. Times were never better than those days I spent with those wonderful and precious people. I thank God for the time He gave me with them. I remember all of them with sincere fondness. Spent time with cousins in Haddix also. My grandmother was a Haddix, Peggy Haddix. Take me back to those days!

Great video. My mother was born in Harlan county in 1936 but they moved to Jackson shortly after and she, her sister, my grandmother and my great grand parents (and some I don't know in the same house) show on the 1940 census living in Jackson, KY. My mother used to tell stories about going across the mountain in a "horse and buggy" and working on the farm as a child. I too lived in Jackson in the 70s and 80s... Honestly, we knew some families, even then that were not far off from some of these photos for how they looked and the houses they lived in. I remember crossing a swinging bridge or two back then... when the replaced the open faced bridge going over to "town hill" and we lived on the town hill side we'd walk down, cross the bridge and walk to the stores and things. It was a different time and place then.

My grandmother was from Breathitt. Wow, awesome archiving of life. I was looking for my great-grandparents in this, but I didn't see them.

My mom , now 95 delivered mail on horse back as a young woman. I'm 70 lived on Johnson fork Van Cleve. Grandson of Howard & America vest. They farmed with mules, we had hogs, chickens, gennies, ducks, cows, bull, palomino stallion ,steers, turkeys, dogs, cats. Everything a farm needed. Two large barns, chicken house, out house later in about 1955 indoor bathroom. They were well off compared to most. My grandfather had sharecroppers and eventually deeded them the land they farmed. He was a good person and helped many people. I can remember lots which are my memories. The best years if my life were spent at RR#1 Jackson Kentucky. The only thing left now is the smokehouse/cellar plus the hills and bottom land with a creek running through. Someday I will post beautiful pictures of hay stacks, corn fodder and the farm as I can remember...how time changes things.

Enjoyed the photos. We had a son born in the place in the basement of the hotel 1954. My husband was pastor at the Methodist church in Jackson- Rev. Eugene Barbour. Another son born at the hospital at Ary. Brought our first son Eugene 111 born at Harrodsburg. Remember several people which are probably deceased now. A few who were young people. Great memories!

I grew up in Jackson in the 40s and 50s. My grandfather (John S Hollan) was the postmaster, and his office was in the federal building pictured. If you look at the pics from just south of the courthouse, looking across Main St, you can see the A & P. Beside it is the Jaxon Theatre, owned by my father in the 50s until it burned in 1963, and the White Flash was beside that. Sloan's Grocery was just beyond that on the right. When I was a small boy in 1945 and 46, the swinging bridge was still there at the bottom of Court St, but it was perilous to cross since much of the walking surface was rotten. It was great fun (though it could incur a whipping) to cross it and go exploring the "Indian Post Office" on the Panhandle. Of course, this was before the flood control cutoff was made, reducing the flow around Panbowl substantially. The way of life when I was a boy was pretty much the same as pictured in these photos. But by that time, Jackson had become dry, and to buy alcohol, you had to drive to "the line" or go to one of the local bootleggers. The town would fill to the brim on Saturdays as farmers and families would come to town in old trucks or horse-drawn wagons in order to get provisions or to live it up in town. Thanks so much for the upload!

My ancestors are from here, Sewell's. But they moved into Illinois near the start of the Civil War. Some of their cousins stayed behind. I read where one cousin was caught in the crossfire of the Hatfield-McCoy skirmish and was shot, but not fatally. I enjoyed seeing the area they were from...even if it was 78 yrs later. Thanks

I enjoyed this. Alot of family from down here. Daniel & Sylvain Mullins were my great grandparents. We traveled thru upper & lower canie rd. Lots family on the graveyard that is sliding down hill into the creek at the end of the rd where the mountain is being torn out. I hope to go down this fall & decorate some graves.

This hotel that appears at the beginning of the video must be a very old construction. I realized that the movie ``Fire Down Below (1997)`` with Steven Seagal was filmed there. Unfortunately this building and others around it were demolished! I live in Brazil, watching some videos of the city of Jackson enchant me, because it seems to be a very good city to live in.

I would love to see some photos of Jackson around 57-59 as I'm from that area and remember going to Jackson for government commodities at the court house and of course a bit of other shopping in the wood floored stores.
