@@Damicske If you are referring to Flight-5 I would guess the launch will take place in late July. However, I wouldn't be shocked if it launched in August. Every time they have launched it has been sooner than the previous launch.

Flight 4 was just about everything I could have asked for. If they’re serious about catching the booster for flight 5, I might get serious about traveling down there to see it in person.

I did for flight 4! Watched it from the south Padre island right off the canal. What nobody tells you is that we heard the sonic booms from the booster and the landing burn. The weather was terrible for viewing but it was great for sound apparently. 23 hour trip there and a lot in gas but the trip to see it is completely worth it.

NIce. But then how did the booster overtake the ring twice at 41 km 6:42 and again at 25km 7:10? I dont see why the ring would catch up with the booster again and then slown down rapidly passing again at high speed within a few seconds. 7:10 does look far away tho so its not ice. Anybody flying random ballon camera out there?

I have a feeling. dunno.The ring here did an appearing act, in the future it might do a dissapearing act.."Best part is no part" style. The need for hotstage appeared from seemingly nowhere, while the simple moves necessary for staging were hype as genius. I still think that the data and improvements in managing the liquids and in software would,again, put in perspective the passive staging. Just saying..

Brilliant update thanks Ryan and NSF team.

Really interesting watching replays of reentry after the fact. First time through we had no idea what to expect, so nothing was easily identifiable as an anomaly. But on repeated viewings, knowing they were going to get burnthrough, everything we see was reframed. All of the little vapor trails that we all thought were just atmospheric effects were likely actually combustion products...vapor trails were even pouring out of the rear border of the heat shield, which suggests the interior of the ship (or maybe just the engine skirt where they intentionally left tiles off) was potentially full of smoke. And the green sparks from the flap probably bits of metal ablating away (reminds me of burning metals in a bunsen burner flame to get different colors). Funny that seeing reentry all the way through and seeing booster landings will soon be normal and common...SpaceX shifting the reality window again.

Not exactly. It was done about a minute after the booster landed. By then they had the positional data of the booster and could use it as an input for the movements needed by the chopsticks. The booster lands flying through a virtual "tube". As long as it remains inside it all is well. If not, it just lands at sea.

@@DUKE_of_RAMBLE That is the plan. The booster will land at sea unless it is perfectly within the corridor. It has to actively change course some seconds before landing to be able to land on the tower. If there is any doubt it can't make it it just continues down to land in the ocean. Note that it comes down at about the speed of sound, so a small change in direction makes for a large distance on land/sea. It slows down very quickly the last 5-10 seconds. I hope that was clearer.

@@NeroDefogger i think its elon who insists on attempting a catch. i bet spacex would want to do another water landing or 2 before attempting a risky catch. the booster did lose an engine during landing, so i bet they would prefer pulling off a perfect landing burn before attempting a catch.

@@musiqlgreen6141 i dont think so. i doubt trying to catch the booster earlier would really effect the time line for artemis. the first starship propellant transfer test is scheduled for next year, and there will probaly be atleast another 3-4 starship launches this year alone, so there would be no harm in delaying a caatch attempt by a launch or two.

Yup. They have a deluge even during static tests. They need water between the Raptors and the concrete.

But isnt the booster supposed to be caught off to the side to prevent any damage to the OLM in case the chopsticks were to fail? Or has this changed?

I can’t imagine this was a mishap flight.

Extrapolation of delays between flights 1-4 suggests a delay of 61 and 48 days for flights 5 & 6. So August 6th and September 23rd.

Except for flight 2, they seem to like launching on Thursdays. So, maybe August 8 for flight 5 and September 19 or 26 for flight 6

@@Barthhhelona both are valid. "boy-ee" is more consistent with how we pronounce "buoyant" and "buoyancy" (it's not "boo-ee-ant" or "boo-ee-an-see") but "boo-ee" is more distinct. But the rule in English is that no word is valid unless you can come up with at least two completely different ways of pronouncing it 🤣 And it's always so much fun the first time you hear a regional version you're not familiar with. I was mesmerized the first time I heard "min-ee-at-yur" and "no-man-clay-ture."

Dear SpaceX, Please DO NOT attempt a catch before you have at least one other OPERATIONAL launch tower. If I were you I'd focus on the Cape Tower, Starlink Deployment and Artemis and worry about the catch as an add on to launches from BC AFTER the second tower is available.

Ablative shields are something they were hoping to avoid since it would require more refurbishment. Likely this is an interim step to the final heat-shield configuration. I'm expecting they want to get this up and running quickly to start launching larger starlink hardware.

The ablative is under the reusable: its a failsafe: if the primary shield fails, the ship will still land.

I’m thinking they’re focusing now more on HLS. They are behind on meeting goal dates and need to catch up. In the mean time they can launch Starlink from Falcon 9. Starlink from Starship is a bonus pride. HLS has to come first. Successful booster catches and fuel transfer on orbit have to be the immediate goals

@@DebraJean196 Everyone is behind those dates. The main goal for SpaceX is profitability via Starlink. So, focusing on that is in their best interests. They can also test HLS with these flights (insulation, refueling, ect, ect)

The propellant isn't toxic, it's simple methane

Might it be possible that they shut down the engines on the booster intentionally? To show that they have the capability to lose a engine both on ascent and descent?

Looks like they did a not-so-dry (LOL) run on a return catch. Run the water deluge system (for the landing burn) while closing the arms in a simulated catch at the same time as the booster hit it's mark. IFT-5, here they come!

Great informative summary (as usual!) thanks. As the time gap between Flights 2 & 3 was 4 months, and the gap between Flights 3 & 4 was just 3 months, I think this next gap is going to be just 2 months so I'm calling Flight 5 for August!,

I think IFT 5 will take closer to 2 months or a bit more. This is because of the full heat shield replacement and the ablative undercoat. Plus, I feel like they want to make good progress on Launch Tower 2 just in case B12 misses the mark.

The nice thing about the tiles is that they can be removed and replaced rather quickly.

Ryan is a very engaging presenter.

The QD arm needs to rotate out of the exhaust during launch.

SpaceX needs to ditch the fore and aft flaps in favor of one or two scissor wings. This would simplify the geometry of the area covered by thermal protective tiles and it would shift any moving parts out of the plasma stream.

I think ship 30 and booster 12 launch mid July. By then they should have the last 3 tanks down and the first few tower segments up. Then I guess the question is do you risk a tower catch with booster 12 on flight 5. Or do you wait another month, finish erecting tower 2, in case 1 is damaged in the attempt and try catching lucky booster number 13 on flight 6. Lol

I wonder if they plan on trying to complete tower 2 to catch the next booster in order to reduce the damage risk vs trying with tower 1.

I don't understand why Space X doesn't want a independent retrieval (catch) platform (just like the barges). The idea of catching Starship on the launch platform is risking a year of repairs and setbacks. If they build a Lego, snap on type platform just to catch the thing, big deal if it crashes.

Beacuse in future they want to fly in hours, so they can't lose time with moving booster back to the launch tower. Obviously do it after 4 flight is so risky :'). Also, the booster will be almost empty, so don't expect BIG explosion (if).

Good to see ship 30's tiles will be twice as strong as ship 29's but elon saying launch in one month that depends on if FAA carries out a mishap investigation or not which we dont know yet they are still assesing.

I'd think 4 weeks is very optimistic, even for Elon.. 6 weeks maybe, but I'd expect it to turn out to be more like 8 weeks, which is still very fast..

IFT5 will happen 54 days out from IFT4 if we calculate the previous decrease in Timeline between launches. 54 sounds reasonable considering Elons "30 day" prediction.

July 4th!!!!!

I predict the next launch will be sometime in August unless a hurricane develops.

They may have been installed by now, when the ship was first tiled.

Got to be at least 2 months if they have to completely replace the tile system for next flight.

they'll probably be very different. they will be much larger in size, larger pads, maybe different material. whatever system they use to absorb the landing impact would also be differnt since itll be landing on the moon instead of earth, and carryign a pretty big and heavy ship instead of a empty first stage booster. also, i wouldnt be surprised if they have more than 4 landing legs.

I think 8-12 weeks until flight 5. One month is in Elon time and there is no constant conversion rate. They need to replace the heat shield, work on the exploding raptor issue, refurbish the launch site and probably make enough progress with tower #2 to be able to finish it until IFT6, for there is a high chance of damaging the tower during catch attempt.

When this video was first posted the thumbnail graphic read 'Complete Success', why the change?

With the taller stack for v2, will the tower be taller?
