It makes me think of an art project I saw once, Stacey Greene's "Lipsticks". A photographer took pictures of a bunch of women's lipsticks, the lipsticks had many different shapes and unique features because of all the different ways the women applied them.

I've never seen anyone else do this - my grandmother's lipsticks were all like that. She put hers on the same way, one swipe between the lips, done. Thing is, she had thin lips and it worked just fine for her. I have more bowed and plump lips, though, and there was no way to apply it properly this way.

I did this my whole life and stopped only recently... don't know why. And no I don't have thin lips. There's just a technique to it... and it would give me a perfect application every time. 😊

If you have small lips, this is the fastest way to paint your lips

My mum does the same thing to her lipsticks 😂 but as a child in the 90s, i saw a man put on lipstick (just like you did btw) and immediately thought that looked more right than how my mum puts lipstick on, so I adopted the same way you do it and never looked back 😂

There are lipsticks out there that comes with pointy ends that is supposed to be made so that you can put it between the lips and apply both at the same times like that. And it also always make you have a thin part to easyer apply to the edge/line of your lip.
