In this special instalment from Bradford Through The Lens, we bring you one of the SECRET TUNNELS under Exhibition Road, Saltiare.
It will give you an idea of the millworkers and students of the village during the Victoria era, who used the tunnels built beneath the roads to get to work, or to their studies.
➡️ The survey is now closed. Thank you for all the submissions.

The Saltaire Collection is very grateful to Bradford Through The Lens for making this short film.
Ever since the event in 2017 when ‘the secret tunnels of Saltaire’ were opened for the public and so many visitors couldn’t get to see them due to the interest the event created, we have been asked ‘could you open the tunnels again’.
For this tunnel, the only way we could do that was by asking Bradford Through The Lens to make this film. We hope that you enjoy the film and the hidden history of the tunnel.
Thank you for watching and especial thanks to those of you who take a minute to answer the survey questions which will very much help a piece of audience research, funded by the heritage Lottery programme of grants, that we are undertaking.
You can follow more about Saltaire’s history on social media.

Thank you for the support 🙏
Worked at Victoria Hall as part of the Caretaking team for 4 years, never knew the tunnel existed. I know that there is a tunnel under Victoria road from Salts Mill to the Mill building which was used by the mill workers to go through because the mill building was used as a canteen

Lived in Shipley for many years, I know about the tunnel under Victoria Rd, but did not know about this one in Exhibition Road. Well done Riaz, for another fascinating and historical information sharing. One other important subject was the dividing UNESCO line under the tunnel.

@@BradfordThroughTheLens I really enjoyed Bradford Jesus. My sister would be about 5 years old when she saw him. She was convinced he was Jesus. I remembered his sandals as I had never seen those on a man before because everyone wore clogs or boots. Thank you for your interest in the history. 👍🙏🏼
So excited to see this one, thank you guys !!

Thank you for sharing this. I've always been curious by the tunnels since my dad worked at Victoria Hall for many years. His work sadly came to an end due to ill health during covid but he always used to tell me about the tunnels and he also believed it to be haunted! He used to want to sneak me down too to have a look but never got around to it!

when we dug the shop out next to McDonald's in bradford Town centre. In the late 90s we found old tunnels under there. experts were saying they started at the town hall. Someone said they found some old shackles. I never seen them.. So not sure if that was true

Very interesting. I will see if there is anything in this story. Thanks 👍🏼
the main issue with Saltaire is NOT with saltaire at all! It is with the stupid railway rules about disabled scooters! Not being allowed on the train! - having said that when I do make it there it's lovelly I used to live at Glenwood Avenue next to the park love the area
I did not know about this tunnel, although I visited Saltaire several times. I have a friend who lives in Shipley, I'll ask him if he knew. I like your videos about Yorkshire history or places of interest.

can they not open the tunnels by charging? I mean if there was significant interest could it not generate revenue to help with the upkeep?

They are in real bad condition, and you can imagine the H&S safety aspect. I guess it's a point they might consider in the future if they get to sort it out.
@GhostvaperYT
Жыл бұрын
@@BradfordThroughTheLens yes I know the laws here with H&S are very strict to the point that some of them are stupid. These days people sue for any little injury so maybe its a no no to reopen tunnels. shame
