The game closes by saying [SPOILER!] . . . _In order to preserve peace between humans and Reploids, X must destroy Zero._ But Zero's been *heroic* throughout the game, even delivering the final blow. So far, the SNES Mega Man X series still hasn't revealed Zero's secret to the players.

Depends on which version you play. In the japanese version, it is far more explicitly said that Zero is the last of Wily's creations.
