Lot of foreshadowing in this film that benefits from a second viewing. For example, the inverted triangle symbol for Satan? When Lee sees it in the psychic evaluation at the beginning, she refers to it as "father". That's just one example.

Yep my feelings also, style over substance. Yes there was a plot but it just got a bit convoluted. I think it could have made the satanic part less messy. Cutting out the whole doll thing would have made a big difference. It was just unnecessary. Also showing less of Nic Cages face like in the beginning would have been better and made it way more creepier. Once we saw more of his face it just looked fake and laughable.

It was a slow burn and that irritated me after a while because even though the tension was building, Lee and the other actors wouldnt change with that tension they kept the same pace throughout all the acts. It took away from the sense of urgency even though you could tell things were coming to a head. Its also what contributes to the feeling that you could predict what was going to happen next. The characters were so "unresponsive". The movie wasnt perfect but it was good and original in a lot of ways and worth a watch this weekend.

I think I'll actually like it, because I think slowburn horror is the most effective horror you can receive, especially in a dark theater. It was not scary, but it was a really good detective thriller... Then the third act happened and it was no longer a detective thriller. This might be the type of film to benefit from multiple viewings, so I will see it again simply for the beautifully framed shots and to see what I missed, but I know for a fact the average moviegoer will despise the last act and ending.

They didn't achieve that. Hereditary was one of the scariest movies I had seen in my life. I think Joe might be overlooking some of the creepiness. Hollywood is terrible at writing police detectives. The detectives were campy in Maxxxine too. I genuinely liked the movie, I have grown out of the same jumpscare movie genre and now into the ambient, completely uncomfortable, creepy analog style horror. I prefer a 'everyone looks wrong, like they don't look normal and something is going on' rather to a 'omg a ghost tossed a ball across the room'. I think a VERY unappreciated movie that heavily depicts this is Resident Evil welcome to racoon city. Especially the beginning aspect as to when everything just started turning bad. This is real horror. Horror is NOT just what is going to jumpscare you, but what makes you anxious, on the edge of your seat and constantly feeling uneasy. I won't say this is a perfect movie by any means, though it is definitely a lot better and more complex than what a lot of people give credit for... I assume likely most people who dislike the movie are probably those who think all horror movies are supposed to be scary, or are too confused by the plot (or unable to be imaginative and realize there isn't supposed to be a sensible storyline...). It is quite literally an uncomfortable situation unfolding without any way for you to control it. That is what I love so much about the movie.

Plot makes no sense but it has a creepy atmosphere. What was the point of the notes or making the pentagram with the dates? Why did he leave that evidence? What was it going to accomplish if he killed all of his victims and made the pentagram? If you're really anal about plot holes or things making sense, you won't like this movie. However, if you enjoy atmospheric horror and don't get so caught up in the plot being sensible or logical you can enjoy it. It's like you're exploring someone else's nightmare, things happen and they are creepy but it's not something you can make a whole lot of sense with.

The only thing I can think of is that Longlegs is human (therefore flawed and prone to error) and like all crazy killers they crave some sort of attention/fame which is why he left the trail behind him, and it did feel like he wanted to get caught in the movie. As for the pentagram, he worships Satan the murders were constructed as a ritual/tribute to him like many killers in real life like to do, they usually have MO’s and ritualistic components. Also they’re not plot holes because they don’t contradict or conflict with other parts of the story. Maybe unnecessary stylistic choices but it’s not a plot hole

I did like the suspense in the MC doing detective work and learning how this Manson-style killer works with his own system, and it's a lot more interesting when we're led to believe she's an outsider in all this. But yeah as the movie goes on and the beats are revealed everything was just too perfectly explained? And on top of that, the creep factor throughout is amazing but it isn't _ that scary._ So after everything occurs I'm like, "cool, how's she getting out of this?" the movie's over. And after you learn Longleg's killing pattern, you see the FBI Chief with his family and you can already assume what's going to happen WAY early and it just becomes a matter of when

Oh you have an age appropriate daughter with a birthday coming up... Word. No way that's coming back up at all. Also the locked door and her mom asking about the prayers... This movie's plot is anything but subtle. Some of the writing felt stiff, not sure if it was the delivery or what but I often went "... Okay?". It felt like someone wanted to combine hereditary, the witch, and seven but didn't really know how to capitalize on what made those movies special in that movie smoothie. (I haven't seen silence of the lambs so maybe that should be in there too). The ending also confuses me as to what the goal is now that longlegs is dead. Who's going to make the dolls now? Do the dolls matter? Seems like the point is really to get the cursed sphere in the house, everything else was set dressing? Cage could have dialed it back in a few scenes but I thought he was effective. Overall it's still okay, I'd give it a 6/10 maybe.

I appreciate it more when the supernatural is a layer or a matter to debate (if it was or not). When supernatural actually shows up, if you don't do it like for example Blair Witch did, then it lands more on fantasy. I remember Event Horizon a sci-fi horror that had very creepy shit right at the start, and the whole thing is bizarre, and landed in both areas. They were probably just insane, specially at the end you still question if it was just supernatural. Still is cool, but not Midsummer cool let's say. I still debate with friends that Midsummer was using the drugs they consumed, in fractal patterns on nature in the background, just to relay the unexplained influences they might have had. Never noticed it the first time I watched it, so that's a good way I enjoy more as creepy. You feel unease during the movie, you don't see any ghosts or demons, but then when you re-watch you see abnormal shit the characters were never aware or fully aware.

The supernatural part of it I'm on the fence about. I did like parts of it as well and didn't like a lot of it as well. I think it would have worked better if it wasn't supernatural in my opinion. I liked the idea of the killer being so good at having all the family members die that the detectives actually start questioning if it is supernatural in a way of they just have no clue on how to handle the case or killer. Overall the movie is still a great movie. It made me feel uneasy for how long they keep the shots for, on characters or places.

SPOILERS My question is why did Lee’s mom have to kill that last family after longlegs dies? Couldn’t she just destroy Lee’s doll’s head so that she wouldn’t be possessed and be done?

Lee literally asks her this and her mom states that because of her pact to Longlegs, she has to continue the killings (at least for as many of the families he made dolls for before his death) or they'll be condemned to hell and Lee will no longer receive her psychic powers and continued protection.

When other Joe said Hereditary wasn't scary I couldn't disagree more. The scene where Toni Collete wakes everyone up and does a seance for her daughter, I get goosebumps just thinking about. Seeing Longlegs at 5:45 tonight, couldn't be more excited.

I couldn't get past the prosthetics. The story fell apart pretty quick. There wasn't any logical reason for any of the actions. I was pretty uncomfortable the entire time, but the air was off in the theater. When you need to explain how it all fits at the end, it just shows how disjointed it was in the first place. There was a Neon preview for Cukoo...that looks great
