Longlegs Movie Review - Slow, Frustrating, Artsy Crap
Фильм және анимация
Longlegs Movie Review - After watching Longlegs with a few buddies, I can confidently say this movie sucked. Well, it sucked for us. That doesn't mean this A24 wannabe won't work for others. Particularly those who enjoy a very slow, tedious film with beautiful cinematography. That only takes a film so far. Big fans of the genre will probably love this but regular moviegoers will not be impressed.

Wait, you’re telling me that if some random lady came to your house and said “congrats, you won this gift from the church! What is it? Oh it’s a realistic doll that looks like your daughter! Coincidence! Just make sure to keep it in your house cause ya know, everyone knows churches do this! Not creepy at all! Not unusual. Everyone would just let this happen ;)”…. So dumb.

Thank you!! I'm glad someone realizes how stupid that is- especially when someone goes up to the door of an FBI agent investigating a crime having to do with a devil worshipping serial k!ller. Appreciate this, it cuts like a knife through the fog of deification. Social Media is flooded with idiot "critics," my guard was up immediately when one was gushing about his earlier GRETEL AND HANSEL (dragged on and pretentious). For some reason nobody mentions SINISTER - a movie that 1) begins a crime procedural, shit taped to walls, old footage of family murders across the years, then veers into SATAN. But SINISTER was awesome! The cure for this should be in about one month: ALIEN ROMULUS. Let's just say Fede Alvarez's EVIL DEAD remake was anything but 'arty.'
This was like going to a 5 star restaurant, expecting a Wellington or a filet and the waiter brings you a bologna sandwich and shitty beans
I get skeptical anytime a thriller is under 120 mins. This movie was only 100 mins long. Not alot of time for development and explanation. And it showed. Any thriller/horror films that are around 90 mins are usually borderline bad or awful. You can have alot of success with comedies under 120 mins but thrillers need time. If this movie was just 20 - 30 mins longer it wouldve been alot better. Also, Cage should've been a sicko not a weirdo. Weirdos arent scary. Just my opinion.

no problem with the pacing or a slow burn. Cage sunk the movie the moment he was on screen. I don't know if another actor could have saved this in that role... probably yes. His performance was uncomfortable to watch, but because it was scary, but because it was embarrassing. It became very clear why they hid him in the trailer.

It was a 10 until the third act... became a 5. Fuck the story and end was terrible.... The most generic lazy shallow reason for murders.
Omg the disappointment. I've never left a theater so bummed until now. I should''ve known but curiosity killed this cat yet again. Too many negatives to list. I think the director knew he had crap on his hands hence the awesome bait and switch trailers to trick as many people into those opening weekend seats to make his money back ASAP!! Today's filmakers have everything at their disposal to help them make a good movie but if you're not the filmaker you're cracked up to be be then everything at your disposal doesn't matter. Like the saying goes: You can put lipstick on a pig but it's still a pig. That applies to movies as well.
Dude thank you! I saw so many reviews of this movie and warnings to stay away from spoilers so I only worked half a day and saw the opening premiere at my local theater…and I was like WTF is this? Am I watching the same movie they did? It’s that type of movie where if there’s not something truly scary they’ll just blast some ungodly loud sound to scare you. I hate loud sounds and classical conditioning (which I assume is what they are trying to do?) doesn’t work for this, it just makes me hate the loud noises. What was so unsettling about NC’s weird glam rocker mask? I mean I don’t think it’s supposed to be a mask in the movie, it’s his real face but…so what? He’s only in it briefly and I agree with the young girl at the desk, he;so some weirdo. And the “spoilers” I’m assuming they were all staying to stay away from are revealed early on for anyone not completely incapable of guessing why someone would get a card, be able to translate an unknown alphabet, guess that maybe that little girl in the last is this lady now! Wow, how shockingly impossibly not done in other films before! So not impressed. Whoever said not to compare it to Silence of the Lambs was right on the mark - that was a classic; this is just stylistic weirdness that isnt a classic or clever or a masterpiece or any other superlative I’ve seen lauded on it. 2/10.

Yeah, I'm getting really tired of the Denis Villeneuve-ification of movies (I know it's not just his influence, but he's kind of become the posterboy for me). Slow and vacant and mood-lit doesn't equal deep. Blade Runner is my favorite film, it's slow as hell, but it's serving a specific atmosphere. Most films that employ this now are just trying to avoid stepping on any "rakes" by not making any bold decisions.

Even though I came in completely blind, I was still baffled by the opening title card which is a quote from a TRex song. Didn't seem to have anything to do with the movie based on what little I knew. And indeed it didn't. I was genuinely shocked when the theater started filling up with mostly teens. I figured it looked really art house based on the trailers but it was mostly a packed show. While the audience was extremely vocal for all the wrong reasons during the Strangers movie, they were almost entirely quiet for the majority of this film. I was engaged with the premise but was severely let down by the end which felt like a series of contrivances. There is also a really ambiguous plot point regarding dolls that is not really explained. Cage is the reason most people will remember this movie. It's an odd performance where he seemingly disappears into the role but his personality does shine through in some really unexpected moments. And his makeup was great. He looked like a mix between an aging Bette Davis and Buffallo Bill from Silence of the Lambs.
@JohnYoung-x6j

And they played T. Rex's "Bang A Gong" over the closing credits. Apparently the writer/director, Osgoode Perkins, was drawn to the glam-rock movement's use of horror/satanism -- "you've got the teeth of the hydra upon you" is certainly an unusual lyric for a love/lust song lol -- and I think it was also a major contributor to Nicholas Cage's look. Perkins definitely threw a lot of stuff/tropes at the wall, and the result was a mess, although I have to admit that overall I enjoyed the movie, mainly because I was surprised at how funny I found it. That final image -- of Longlegs blowing a kiss at the audience -- suggests to me that Perkins never meant us to take this movie as seriously as it was marketed. PS What was the plot point regarding dolls that you felt was ambiguous?
@politefan8141
25 күн бұрын
@@JohnYoung-x6j *Massive Spoilers* My impression of the doll was that when Lee's mother shoots it, Lee loses her psychic ability which was her own defense mechanism. Earlier in the film, the girl jumps out of the window days after they exhume her doll after previously being in a coma, which leads me to believe that neither Lee nor the little girl is safe in the end. Although we see Lee pass out after the doll is destroyed, we're left to speculate what type of power the doll has and why it seems to affect Lee and the other girl differently. I'm not sure if Cage's appearance serves a thematic purpose but given that Lee's mother is his primary accomplice, either one or both may be under the same influence. My best interpretation of the end is that the mother becomes a willing accomplice ready to sacrifice her own daughter after Longlegs kills himself. During the interrogation, Longlegs may be taunting Lee by acting like her mother. However it can also be inferred that part of her may be trapped in Longlegs just like the girls are trapped in those dolls. Superficially, his character reminds me of Psycho and Silence of the Lambs, which are obviously films that inspired Perkins. Some may like the heavy emphasis on the supernatural during the climax, while others may be disappointed that the film isn't the psychological crime thriller it appears to be for most of its runtime or the fact that there is no triumphant ending for the main character.

Barbarian’s appeal was suspense that turned into some comedic relief. Longlegs was just trying to be eerie like a wannabe hereditary but the story was to disjointed and all together thoughtless.
I feel like while filming, they changed how things were going to play out. There was a point in the movie where a 911 call was played by one of the murdering fathers, and he said something to the effect of his daughter “not being her” before her killed her. When they found that first doll and did the “autopsy,” my first thought was there was some psychic aspect of the doll that drove the families insane and convinced them their own families were not real. Up to that point when they found the first doll, I was pretty captivated by the tone, cinematography, tension, and story. If the movie would have carried the psychic idea and used the ciphers (which ended being nonsensical), it could have been great. But the switch to the devil the way they did it felt like a cheap cop out of a resolution that they think didn’t pan out.
Finally, an honest review. Longlegs is Awful!
I am really surprised at how many people are praising this movie and Nic Cage's performance, I thought it was kind of awful. Seriously disappointed, the marketing promised something smart and twisted, this movie felt like "Nic Cage does a creepypasta story written by an edgy 14 year old."
So glad I found this!!! It’s such a terrible movie! How did they find the guy with just a picture took 30 years prior, with no name, no social media, no nothing? And the books? Just saw this horror show of a movie, you are completely correct sir!
I had so many questions when this movie was over. 1. What happened in the beginning when the man was shot and she went upstairs? We never find out what the heck that was about. 2. Why the hell is he called Long Legs? Because he attacks kids and he's taller than them? 3. Why do the cops not investigate this case sooner? It seems like it was going on for long time. 4. How does our main character magically know the cypher for this stupid notes? 5. Why didn't the main FBI dude talk about how his daughter was born on the 14th? 6. Why does our main character dress like she fell out of a thrift store? There's so many more. Like nothing was explained in this movie and nothing was scary. COME ON!
Completely agree, Adam. Our family went to see it this evening, and I rue the day that hype/marketing really got its claws into the collective psyche because we were not only expecting something exceptional, but what we got was even less than par. Had it had a minimal marketing budget and simply been released without undue fanfare, I think it would have been received as something that was solid, with moments of inspiration, but ultimately uneven. Unfortunately the hype itself has made it seem worse by comparison. Solid, low-budget horrors that *are* worth seeing, imo: Blair Witch (of course), Paranormal Activity, Triangle.
Fair enough take, I admit that even I loved it, there were things that bugged me. Such as Maika Monroe's character. It's the same issue I had with It Follows. Both characters seem to just be in a trance the whole movie and don't have many traits. Also, some of the pacing was admittedly slow. As for Nic Cage's acting, idk, I found his over the top nature to actually work this time around. It's clear that Longlegs is a nut, so it works in my opinion. Thanks for the review, Adam! Keep it up!
