I have this growing all around my yard and I eat it nearly every day. It grows rapidly, produces new leaves each day, tastes great, has a slight crunch and it's free and healthy for me. There's no down side. Try it!

❤ wish I could get some cutting of your longevity plant. I have a lot of health issues and will like to add to my garden for my daily use. I do reside in Cape Coral, Fl. Thank you so much for sharing about this wonderful plant.

I live in SWFL and my home was ground zero for hurricane Ian. My home was destroyed but I had pots of longevity spinach on my upper deck. It was under water for 8 hrs and was withstood 157 mph winds and it survived. Since my house was not liveable, the spinach was totally abused by not being watered, air filled with dirt and sand and that spinach just keeps on growing. If you want something that is easy to grow and can stand abuse...this is the plant for sure.

I love this plant. It is easy to grow. Plant once and you have food forever. It will grown in 9a. You will need to cover it if there is a frost or freeze warning. It also makes a nice house plant, if you have good direct sunlight. It is great for salads, smoothies, etc. and is delicious.

Thanks for the comment! Thanks for the freeze protection reminder, I like to run irrigation nights that there is a freeze warning to help insulate them. I like the house plant idea for when it gets dark at 5.. lol. Keep Gardening!

I just paid 17$ for 4 rootings on Amazon. Now l can share cuttings too in the future.

Friend gifted me a pot over year ago; since then I have gifted same to several friends. This plant us super easy to grow and start new pots and absolutely delicious!

Heidi. Thanks for this. My wife goes through a bag of Baby spinach every day or two, so I've been growing Lagos and Sisso spinach to try to win her over to the backyard. I'll try Longevity.

Hey I’m your 400th subscriber 😀 I grow longevity spinach too! I love how easy it is to propagate and it loves the Texas heat! We had a winter freeze and I was able to bring all of my plants in to store indoors while the power was out. They survived! (Thankful for container gardening 🧑‍🌾) Great video! I’m inspired to propagate more and give these plants out to family and friends again this year.

just started growing Longevity spinach this year (St Lucie County, FL) .... have some in ground & some in pot ... my first attempt to propagate was in water (no luck) ... will try this method tomorrow! (my other 2 perennial spinaches that I love are Brazilian & Okinawan)

When propagating plants from cuttings typically it is good to have the cut parts harden off, (heal) to inhibit moisture rot and infection. However, I have had great results with direct planting. Remember to place in a shady area to get the roots growing and to make sure sun doesn't dry out. Let me know how it works! I have found direct planting, Hawaiian Ti and Chaya do best this way too! Keep gardening!

Suggestion: Don't cut the top at 45 degrees and you will know which side to sink into the dirt. You also don't want to cut the top at 45 because it loses more moisture that way. Cut it flat above the top node and then at 45 closer and under the next node that will be sunk into the dirt. It's 2 cuts, but it's better.

That makes sense to especially if you are using a green house to propagate, I have been taught to always cut at an angle so when we have heavy rains here in FL the plant tip doesn't hold moisture and rot from the top... I'll try both and see how they both fair...this stem is so narrow it shouldn't rot that easy. Thanks for the suggestion! Appreciated! Keep Gardening!

@@GardeningWithHeidi I live in Florida too. Cutting things at an angle to avoid holding moisture on top is a myth. If you're really worried about doing the best possible method you can for your plants then cut them in stages. Cut the part you will propagate, let the mother plant heal. Cut another piece to propagate from the same stem, let it heal, and keep repeating while giving the mother plant a chance to heal the top part. I think that''s splitting hairs myself, but, it makes some people feel better and it keeps them busy and off the streets! ;)

In Lutz, FL. It's awesome! It grows like a weed, & it propagates easily. I harvest mine every week and cook it. Today, I actually made pesto with it.

Looks great for in the ground in warm climates. In a pot it looks relatively unproductive, as if you could strip off every leaf and only have a fraction of the greens produced by lettuce, kale, mustard, or many other greens, in the same footprint. But sometimes we grow things just because we like them and because we can.

Thanks Heidi, this is an interesting edible plant. And I think that at least some of the medical warnings could be benefits to some folks. I also have a request, will you please tell us again which chemical that you use to sterilize your clippers between uses? Hydrogen Peroxide maybe?

@@buglady856 oh. Not really an easy plant to find. Maybe see if you can find some garden groups local that you could get some cuttings. You could try Echocommunity.org they may be able to send cuttings

Heidi, how many hours of full sun does the plant need...??

How long does it take to root? I popped a few cuttings into a pot of soil about a month ago. The cuttings still look fresh but there are no roots yet. What am I doing wrong I wonder.

If the plant is healthy, you are not doing anything wrong! SPRING is around the corner and new growth should happen soon! Once it gets established it takes off...be patient! Thanks for the comment...let me knkw when it starts o take off!

There's a herbal store in Temple Terrace called Grace's. That's where I got mine from a few months back.

What is your soil like? Have you amended it or is it mostly sand? Do you water daily in pots if it is dry? Thanks from Punta Gorda.

It does fine in really poor sandy soil...likes a little shade, adding good compost occasionally around the base of plant, not on stem is a.good idea in growing season, more nutrients in helps defend against pests and provide more nutrition...stay away from chemical fertilizers...worm castings are great, no burn...mine get irrigation from yard sprinklers 2 times a week. During this dry winter and spring I would give it a good soak when I would notice the leaves curling in, a sign of conserving water.

You may want to try ETSY, i have seen cuttings for sale on there. I haven't looked into the legality of shipping plants so I am not doing at this time...there is a lot of interest, so I may have to provide these at some point...thanks for watching!

I just planted mine in the ground...mostly shaded with irrigation...I think it will do well. I had placed them in the pots in that area and they were doing well...so now I am just going to put them in the ground...maybe leave them in the pots in the area you are thinking and see how they like it...hope this helps.

Hi Diane. Just use a well draining potting soil or raised bed mix. If you want to mix your own, 1/3 sand 1/3 compost 1/3 top soil. You could add a little more sand for good drainage, this plant is super easy to grow. The good thing about containers is you can move it around to find the best location...mine do great in part shade. As far as fertilizer, a good compost once in awhile won't hurt, keep it natural as you are eating the greens. Good luck!

Sand is fine top around the plant with some good compost.

You are correct...it is a ground cover Vining plant that has spinach in its common name.
