Paul Anka wrote a masterpiece. As a soldier in the Army,as I grew up matured I realized the need to model what these soldiers did on 6 June and other field's of battle during W W 2.. Freedom and civilization was not a given. My dad was a B-17 pilot in Europe.These warriors defeated evil.

No one has mentioned that the theme song was written by Paul Anka. According to Wiki: Although he appeared in several films, and was quite believable as a nervous, hyper young soldier in The Longest Day (1962) (for which he also composed the theme music). What a talented song writer.

Nasty business that, the slight shake from arms hitting near or bouncing off, the roar of the engines, and the searing cold. No man should've had to endure that but those brave men will live in memory and in memorial.

That and it holds the single greatest collection of the best actors to ever grace the big screen! My goodness - this movie is a watershed moment in cinematography. My whole family watches it every June 6th; it's just too damn good - it's one of those movies that just can't be remade.

+Guy Byram All gave some, some gave all. Thanks to the allied men and women who gave us over freedom. Though our gratitude will never be able to repay you for our freedom.

My grandpa told me, "If you ever join the Armed Forces, make sure not to take shit from other soldiers because you are where you're supposed to be, so take my word and fight your enemies with whatever you have left in you!" This was the day he died from lung cancer. He was in the Korean War as a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force Military Police, he protected France with pride! My other grandpa fought in Korea in the Army as a Radio Operator for the helicopters that came in, and even called in for more men when he needed to, he died of Heart Problems. My dad, now retired from fifteen years in the Marine Corps, he went into Afghanistan knowing that he had a price to pay for his country, and he protected his friends with any cost.

Even my own father blessed me and ensured that I go and join a project in the Thar Desert area of Rajasthan,which borders Pakistan when I got my transfer order right in front of him,all when he was diagnosed with Cancer and counting his days in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital where he was undergoing treatment.Although he wasn't an Armed forces serviceman he lived like one n ensured that he injected the same quality into us.Salute n Respect from India.

I know a guy whose granddad was in World War II and whose father was in Vietnam and when he came of age she asked his dad if he would be in the military, and his dad told him not to join the military and when asked why not, he told his son, "because America the land of the free is now dead and I don't want you risking your life for the carcass".

These guys weren't soldiers, at least to start. They were tellers, painters, mechanics, etc. But they sure as hell became soldiers when they went into battle. I know, my old man was one of them. Fought thru Normandy. Ended in Dec '45 with an Honorable Discharge that included medals.

Mine arrived right after D-Day as he was in the hospital not knowing if he'd be blind thanks to a live fire accident by another soldier when they shipped his squad out. As airborne, he stayed till after VE Day jumping at Remagen and other places. Then he came home to get ready for the Japan invasion he didn't think he'd survive when Truman gave the approval to drop the bomb. Invading Japan would have cost more lives than all we lost in both Europe and the Pacific combined. Tough call by Truman, but the right one.

My Uncle Joe was in the second wave as a medic, it was the longest day for sure, but the war did not end for him until 1946 he had to stay and help the Germans rebuild. His nightmare was the camps with the broken bodies. R I P Uncle Joe 2015

Eddie Renegade my dad, and several uncles and all the other old timers almost all long gone now- my heroes growing up. Not sports stars for crissakes! These were the men that relished life and built our nation to greatness after conquering the world. It was an honor to know them and whenever I see or hear some ANTIFA punk on FAKEBOOK say that they are like our Greatest Generation fighting Fascism, I tell them that they aren’t fit to wipe the asses of these great heroes of WWII.

top film and films like this will never get made again a truly great epic movie.

Cheerful? Happy? NO! I cry every time I hear it! I saw the movie over 20 times and have the sountrack. Paul Anka's lyrics are anything but cheerful and happy. I am a veteran and will never forget June 6, 1944. Saving Private Ryan depicts the utter horror and brutality of that day in color. I am grateful The Longest Day was in black and white. It got the point across and I still see Red Buttons hanging from the church with the deafening bells ringing and the fear he felt that he would be spotted any second! All those young men slaughtered on Omaha Beach and the other beaches. To think, how many people will go to the beach tomorrow and not even know that June 6, 1944 was know as D-Day and signaled the start of the allies road to victory. May they all RIP and have our enduring gratitude.

The song and lyrics are upbeat and strong, courageous and determined. The theme is a victory march. The day was won despite overwhelming casualties. Imagine the courage it took for those men to step off the pontoons into a sea of blood from their comrades before them. They were a witness to the slaughter yet they still kept coming. I can't even imagine that kind of bravery. I don't even think it exists today. The Greatest Generation was truly the Greatest! God rest their souls and brave hearts.

Without their sacrifice and victory, the French & British colonialism would be simply replaced by the Italian and Japanese colonialism (which means no decolonization of Africa and Asia), most of the Poles would be exterminated and Poland would be completely wiped out from the map, there would be probably cold war anyway between the USA and the new Europe and Asia, I think you can imagine the media censorship and Spain would stay fascist. Milions more would be exterminated and liberal reforms impossible.

My father trained them for D-Day in amphibious landings - he wasn't allowed to go because he was married to a "foreign national" - my mother was English whose home was 9 miles from where they practiced in England (not much of a security risk). So Dad was sent to the Pacific for Iwo and Okinawa. However, we were lucky enough to see the premier of this movie with the general portrayed by John Wayne. There were tears in his eyes for a lot of the movie, later he said it was for all the good men lost on that day, especially for those dropped on the German HQ. As an aside, Richard Todd played the Commanding Officer of the attack on Pegasus Bridge - in reality, he WAS the Executive Officer for that raid and the man who led the troops across the bridge to hold the other side. And the actor we knew as Charles Durning received the Silver Star for his actions @ Point du Hoc that day. ALL BRAVE MEN.

John Wayne portrayed a colonel.

Surprisingly excellent performance with improvised arrangement featuring harmonies that did not included in the original version played by Mitch Miller. Well done!

Can you imagine what that day must have been like..literally these men upon reaching that far away shore were bombarded by bullets once they hit the shore..it must have felt like an impossible task..but they prevailed.

Both my Father and Uncle fought in the Burmese Front. Uncle, a Captain in the medical corps was captured by the Japanese and was MIA in the Singapore POW camps.

Damn Right! they were tough sonabitches back then, the world war 2 generation. My late father was in the "Big One" they called it back then. I had an uncle in Patton's third army fighting in Europe back then, ambushed a kraut patrol near a tank and massacred them all, and had gotten medals along with with his buddies. Another uncle was in North Africa chasing after General Rommel.

My friend Hassan's son Qassim was born on the 6th of June I get him a Birthday Cake every year, with GOLD, SWORD, JUNO, OMAH, & UTAH mapped out on it! When he comes over to my place if I'm a little slow getting the flag out. He commands, "Get My Flag Up!" He starts Kindergarten this year, I bet he's the only one that knows the phonetic alphabet.

Too hard to believe we didn't learn from the greatest generation in our history. Only to facing those who are selling us out for their own gain.

What a movie and what a song. Mind-blowing. Cheap Bollywood musicians have copied it and made famous hindi song "Zindagi has ke bitayenge ... hum to 7 rang hai ....."

This was the marchapst for the best regiment ever in the world....sadly dispanded after some fuck ups....The Canadian Airborne Regiment makes me cry

In school there was a kid who obsessed with military vehicles and played this song, the Russian anthem, and MCR in study hall. He later changed schools for psychiatric evaluation. The kid was also known for picking fights and trying to harm others. Ironically that's how we became friends. One day in 6th grade, he challenged me to fight that barely lasted a minute as for one I did MMA at the time and two I was a few inches taller and had much more bulk (he was a twig and I was the tallest in the grade then). So later he kept on hitting me at times because "[I was] the only one who [fought] back," and we did it as a game to each other as I didn't know it as anything else than friendly rough housing (as I come from a family that does birthday punches). So every time I hear this song it reminds me of him.

I was fighting at the most terrible place of the invasion - the OMAHA BEACH - nine of ten of us lost their lifes - but we weren't heroes - we were 18 y. old youngsters - and in the landing boats approaching the coast - we suddenly had shit in our uniforms - but we ran for our lifes - only one of ten survived - and the next ten hours - nowadays no one can imagine what we have to bare - ...no, I don't describe what happened - no one would believe me - but from the 18 th July 44 I'm blind - ok ?

Let's not use a slippery slope fallacy here, but I urge you to consider what many of the most powerful nations in the world, say Nazi Germany, did when they thought they could conquer the world.

+twiceisworst My point is that the he US has done more good for the world than any other countries combined.We give to charities ,liberate people from tyrants.Are we perfect? Not by along shot.Exceptional ..absolutely.

Justin Henry I think it is wishful thinking to think that the US has "done more good for the world than any [all] other country combined". What good has the United States done? Overthrown democratic governments and helped rebel groups establish dictatorships to support our interests economically? Killed many innocents in many countries in congressionally unauthorized bombings and attacks? The thing is Justin, and I don't want to be condescending when I say this; you don't know what you are talking about. Keep in mind that there is a DIFFERENCE between ignorance and stupidity; ignorance is not being informed of something, and ignorance is holding stupid or illogical opinions even AFTER you are informed of something. Under that, I call you ignorant, not stupid. If you really would like to go on with the argument, if you can call it that, that the US has done the most for the world than every other country combined, let's get some examples going here, and we can go from there. But I suggest you realize that we did not become a global superpower, and are not still a global superpower, because we were moral and nice to others. We displayed our ultimate power a long time ago to Russia, in a place called Japan, with two bombs.
